WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

Anyone testing this reception issue needs to make sure they don't move their phone at all when holding it. If you change the location anything can happen.

Depends on how remote of a location you are in. If there isn't another Apple store in sight then midnight tonight isn't too crazy
Seems a bit over the top.

I'm putting on my tin foil hat and calling bullshit on the people saying that. Hopefully I'm right...

Can someone tell me what the iPhone is when you sync it in the Summary screen?

Is it clearly an iPhone 4 in the picture or an iPhone 3G or 3GS?

This screen (not mine; just Googled):

did you try cycling the airplane mode option?

I cycled through the airplane mode and was able to make it happen again, though it seemed to take a lot longer to drop the bars (seems to take longer to recover the bars as well).

I think someone needs to report to these sites that the yellow spot thing is not permanent. People can do one of the following: Reboot the phone, do a full charge, just wait. One or more of these seems to have removed my yellow spots. My phone is now perfect.

Nice, glad to hear that!

That's great news. Most people have to wait until tomorrow to get their replacements, so maybe by then people will discover that the issue corrects itself, if that is in fact the case.

QUICK QUESTION AMONGST THE MADNESS

Anyone know how the process is going to go with an Apple store inside a mall? The mall doesn't open til ten but the Apple store will open at seven. Can you wait inside the mall? I have a reservation so around what time should I get there to assure one??

Check what people are saying about your location here:

Been helpful for me thus far.

In my experience they line you up outside the mall until it opens (usually earlier than normal) and then Apple employees will escort people inside the mall in groups to line up outside the store itself.

I tried using the Speed Test app and holding the phone in different ways.

At first, while holding it with my left hand I got somewhere around 0.8 Mbps down and 0.8 Mpbs up.

On my second trial, I put it on a glass table and got 1.2 Mbps down and 1.1 Mbps up. I repeated it again and got the same. At that point, I thought, 'Eureka! It's true!'

Then I decided to set the phone on a pillow and got 1.3 Mbps down and 1.4 Mbps up. Curious.

I picked up the phone with my right hand and got 1.4 Mbps down and 1.4 Mbps up. Stranger.

I switched back to my left hand (like the first time) and this time got 1.9 Mbps down and 0.8 Mbps up!

I can't say anything about whether holding it seems to do anything at all. I do notice if I cover the entire antenna band with both my hands, I may lose a bar or two, but it doesn't seem to effect the speed of the 3G.

Apparently the Apple Store near me already has a line of 25 or so people...

...I was planning at going at midnight which I thought was plenty crazy enough, but I'm being outcrazied?! What the fuck?!

I'm actually calling them out to see if we can get confirmation, because in all my line camping days for hyped products, I've NEVER not been within the first 10 people, and I usually get there very very early in the morning the day of...

People are saying I'm already outside of that in the afternoon the day before?!

Tell me it isn't that crazy already...
Is this for non pre-orders? I reserved mine and really have no intention of going any earlier than 6am. Here's hoping it isn't too crazy.

In my one time experience in Albany for the iPad launch, you could wait INSIDE the mall (that was actually kinda eerie, walking around an empty mall at 3 AM) till the Apple Store opened at 8.

In other words, it varies from mall to mall. there is no set rule.

Pre-orders should be fine whenever as long as the store itself has stock, you may just end up waiting awhile to get your phone activated and all that, but you can probably say that you'll walk out with an iPhone with very high confidence.

It's us suckers without pre-orders that need to fight for spots for the most part.

can anyone with both a 3gs and iPhone 4 do some webpage loading tests over wifi. some heavy pages. scrolling tests (hoe often does the checkerboard appear on the iphone4?)

or some app loading speed tests? curious to see the differences.

Its funny, the iPhone 4 waits a second then slaps you in the face with the whole page at once. The 3GS slowly loads the whole page at a constant pace.

... from the few pages I've tried.

For people who already have the phone, did anyone notice tiny black dot on the screen, idk if it's dust or a dead pixel. It's not a big problem but I was just wondering. Not my phone but here's a picture from another forum that's somewhat similar to mine

I have a pre-order but I'm still going 'early' (by that I mean like 6AM) and I would recommend everyone do the same. I know from past launches that the AT&T activation servers ALWAYS seem to crash.

The sooner you can get your phone activated before the rush, the better.

Wow.

Going from 3G to this is amazing.

I stopped off at the Apple store to see if I could grab a bumper (not yet I was told), and I overheard people asking when they should show up tomorrow. Suckers:) But what shocked me was the fact I saw people their buying 3GSs. Really?

Probably not a dead pixel. Why? BECAUSE YOU CAN'T SEE PIXELS. :p

Hrm, UPS hasn't delivered my chair yet. Gotta wait around for them to stop by before I head over to Valley Fair tonight to wait and see Woz. Any Apple fan who wants to punch me for simply asking about the yellow dot can find me there tonight. :D

Will probably get up around 6 and head over to our Apple Store...will see how it goes. If not I'll try again on Tuesday at AT&T.

The mall I'm heading to opens at 6AM, the Apple store at 7AM. I plan on arriving at.. oh, 5:15AM? I feel somewhat confident because there's no thread for my location on the Apple rumors forums. Huzzah!

Also: pre-ordered, so that's not a fear.

This phone is fugging sexy. Doing some side by side comparisons between it and my old 3GS. Night and day difference. Screen is amazing. Kinda wish I never got a 3GS, just so I could have my mind blown more from the 3G. Feels fragile though, and it is a fingerprint magnet. Other than that, no dead pixels, or yellowing, or cell signal drops that I have noticed. Good work apple. I'm gonna have to get a case though. As sad as it will be covering her up.

Hmm. I was going to say the signal issue came back now that I got home, but even just holding it by the glass the bars are fluctuating. Lol

Probably just dealing with AT&T traffic at this point.

Do we know how many megapixels the front camera is? It doesn't say on the tech specs section of Apple's iPhone 4 page.

Also, the ratio of walk ins vs reserves is always WAY MORE walk ins lined up until pretty close to opening time, then the reserve line starts to fill up pretty fast. That's how it was for the iPad, at any rate.

So software bug in iOS 4 then?

It can't be purely a software bug though right? I mean you physically do something and it changes the signal so there has to be something that is changing to initiate the software change.

If reports are coming that some 3G(S) users are experiencing the same after iOS 4, what does that tell you?

Ok.

Just to see if I'm going nuts here. Turns out I did have the antenna issue. I wanted to test and see just how bad the signal dropped with data.

I was holding the phone like in the video and the bars were dropping. I realized I was on wifi and so I switched to settings. Still holding the phone on both sides and with only one bar showing, I went to go into wifi and accidentally turned on Airplane Mode.

I realized my mistake almost immediately and switched it back on. The airplane icon went away and the bars came back. Full.

I've been trying for 15 minutes to get the bars to drop again by holding the sides and I can't get it to happen again.

Can someone else with the antenna issue try and replicate this?

Bars are notoriously inaccurate. Do speed tests.
