WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

Yeah, I just woke this morning with my iPhone 3G having been plugged into my iPad charger over night. It said full when I plugged it in. But my icon was in the red on the lock screen, or when I unplugged. Scared me. I restarted, and it was back at 100%. I wonder if it's a bug in ios4 as it has never happened to me before.

Also, I plugged my iPad into my computer, which normally charges it, but I closed my computer - normally the port still charges, but it then said my iPad was no longer being charged. I figured it goes to a low power mode or something. But in the morning, it was fully charged. Hope it didn't mess with my battery like saying it charged when it didn't.

Lastly, Marty chinn, i'd like to get your view on the resolution of the iPhone 4 as someone who felt they didn't need or will appreciate the higher resolution (colouring aside).

You shouldn't use your iPad charger on an iPhone.

Your computer will charge your iPad, but only if the iPad screen is off. If the screen is on it will only provide enough to power it, but not charge it.

It is pretty good, though. Did you see some of those comparisons with the 8mp EVO camera? The iPhone4 camera absolutely slaughters it.

As a current 3gs owner currently on the EVO hype train I'd have to agree. The i4's camera is better. So is the video quality.

Why not? It uses the same cable?

Same cable, different voltage. iPad charger provides 10volts. iPhone only takes 5v (which is what its charger provides). Should be fine, but the iPad documentation specifically says they don't recommend using it with an iPhone.

Actually the adapter is supposed to be smart and regulate the voltage depending on the device connected to it.

you mean watts. not volts, I believe.

ipad power adapter is 10 watts. phone is 5 watts

voltage should be the same.

ipad power supply will charge that iPhone up FAST, but is generally not recommended.

I used the original "uncompressed / raw" jpg photo from this review.
but once you cropped them and saved them, you saved them back out to jpeg compressing them even further. Take the cropped area and save it to bmp or uncompressed PNG. I suppose you could also do a maximum quality jpeg but it's still a lossy compression.

Actually, I believe the output on the iPhone charger is 5V at 1 amp (so yes, 5 watts). The iPhone charger is 10V at 1 amp (10 watts). It should be fine because the iPad charger should regulate itself, but if it were to surge? Probably best to avoid it, and Apple doesn't recommend it.

Yeah, definitely better on the iPhone. I hope this gets people to not put so much stock into megapixels.

Waited 10 hours in line at the Apple Store on Michigan Ave. in downtown Chicago for one. Apple was very considerate and gave everyone in line free food and drink throughout the day, every employee(of which I would guess were 150 strong at the store that day) was very apologetic for the wait, but everyone was damn cool and positive.

Phone is great, the sheer power upgrade is noticeable and I am more thrilled to actually buy apps now given how snappy everything is. Surprised by the weight though, my old 3G feels a bit lighter, but this screen!

Now off to go find an App recommendation thread...

Still waiting for AT&T to unfuckup my preorder here. :( People at macrumors are assuming those of us who got screwed the first time around should see our phones on Monday or Tuesday at this point. I'm not so optimistic at the moment. I ordered my phone at 4:00 AM on preorder day and I'll be happy to get it in June at this point. >___<

Compare my cropped re-saved jpgs posted earlier to the originals from the site if you wish, you will find they do not appear any different to the eyes. In cases where a difference is noticeable, I will use png. Since the files started as jpgs, and I used high quality jpg compression, there is less loss than if they started as png or bmp and I went to jpg for the first time (that's where most detail is lost).

I've seen screen captures from games where it starts as a png, and then saving even to a maximum 12 / 12 or 100% jpg adds banding and is noticable. However the images from these phones do not start as flawless .png or .raw files, so most of the JPG damage has already been done by the phone itself.

I must have lucked out yesterday. I strolled into my AT&T store near my work around 3:30 yesterday after receiving my call saying it had arrived. I asked her to activate (since my home computer was on the fritz) and I was out the door with my old, deactivated 3G and my brand spanking new iPhone 4 at 3:50. I couldn't have asked for a smoother transition. Credit's given where credit's due and I tip my hat to that store for their overall preparedness.

If anyone with a bumper wouldn't mind answering a question for me? I have used my 3G naked for two years, but after seeing a friends smashed up iPhone I kind of want something, anything, to help protect it. I hate cases as I keep the phone in my front pocket and cases make it hard to slide in and out of the pocket.

My question is, does the bumper add a lot to the overall size of the phone? I would go find out myself, but it's kind of a pain to get into the apple store at the moment.

The bumper is nice. Gary posted a pic earlier, the iPhone 4 with bumper is still thinner than a naked 3GS. My favorite part of the bumper is the metal buttons. It gives it a nice official appearance.

Real Racing on the iPhone 4 is simply amazing
Yeah, it looks fantastic.

It's SO CLOSE to being a smooth 60 fps, though. They are almost there. If they could just optimize it a bit more, it would be perfect.

Still kinda annoyed that I'm gonna have to shave down my in-car headphone plug to get it to fit with the damn bumper...
It's been a bit odd with mine. The USB on my car works with it, but occasionally will say "unsupported" and force me to unplug and replug.

Bluetooth mode works great over the car stereo, though, but USB allows me to charge while driving.

real racing on iphone 4 blows GT PSP out of the water

or maybe i'm misremembering what GT PSP looks like

there's no white lines in the tracks, anyway!

I just joined the iPhone4 club. Walked into the mall, waited an hour and a half and boom I was done. They had a crapload of phones left over from people not picking up reserves yesterday sold them to the general public.

Does a bumpered phone fit into third-party docks? I know it doesn't fit in the official dock, but does it fit on something like a stereo system dock that doesn't have the little plastic shaper on it?

(This isn't for me. Fuck cases. :) )

I am not sure I want a case anymore for this phone.

It is so pretty...

If I get one I will just get another Vaja. I felt the case made my 3G look better, but in this case it will definitely be a downgrade (at least visually speaking). :(

I thought that those stereo systems with docks have a huge space in which a mold goes in that gets provided with the new i product. Could you not just slide the bumpered product into the device w/out the mold?

Calling Gary Whitta

I have no idea, I don't own one of those stereo docks.

Experiencing my first real problem with my phone.

It seems like when it gets too 'cold' it just doesnt wake back up.

the screen doesnt kick on and i have to do a reset...

not sure what is up.

Went to an 02 store in london yesterday for one at about 10:30, queued up for about 40 minutes, they announced they only had 3 iphones left (I was third in the que so was extremly happy) 2 guys infront of me were getting there's when I realised the store manager had allowed one of his friends to jump me and get the last one.

Have to admit I went beserk and tried to fight my corner but it wasn't happening, went home and made a complaint to 02's customer services and they were very apologetic, they sent me a 32gig last night and it arrived at 3pm today so my faith in humanity has been restored!

My iPhone 4 causes signal interface with my stereo dock, so I can't even use it w/ the phone if it does fit :(

So you need to make sure you don't get a warning w/ the iPhone 4 first!

Is anyone else waiting for Facetime to activate on their phone? I keep checking in my settings, but it still says "waiting for activation." I've turned the phone on and off several times to see if there have been any changes, but no luck. Any advice?

And I am impressed by this camera's low light abilities. :D

Well just got off phone w/ premier support.

My phone was requisitioned from warehouse 2 days ago. The rep said their tracking system is pretty FUBAR'ed at the moment, but I could expect to get the tracking number sometime soon. He also said my phone could come through today, even monday at the latest.

Finally some good news.

Forgive my ignorance, but how has it changed? I know they're using the gyroscope now, but what exactly does that mean as far as the actual game is concerned?

co worker had this issue and he fixed it by doing a fresh os install and not a restore

Ah, thanks - I forgot that the screen is probably bringing it down. Actually, it will charge rom that port if I'm using it, I think, but I was just concerned as it went to not charging when I closed my computer (even though I know it's still powered).

Yeah, I have no problem with using my iPad charger to charge my iPhone. For better or worse, I'm of the type to go "if it fits the the port, there's no real harm done". If it were so dangerous, I'm sure they would make it physically impossible to use (like a small tab or something).

Of course, that's just for first party stuff. I'm weary of third party knock offs and things. It may sound like I'm just being ignorant/naive, but the way I figure, major companies will treat people like idiots when it comes to stuff like that - and be pretty sure.

That all said, I know the iPad charger is 10W and does charge the iPhone much faster than usual. The various different sized chargers for the MacBooks are also more or less safe to interchange, and just change the rate at which things charge - and probably exist to match the mAh for the different size batteries for reasonable charge times.

No doubt there is an optimum, and using the non-optimum may reduce overall battery life. I once cared about stuff like fully charging stuff overnight before use and all that, but these days the issues are mostly minimal, and I don't bother too much other than occasionally fully draining a battery.

They upped the screen resolution to 960x640 so it's razor sharp.

textures were also updated to be higher res and 3GS/4 got anti-aliasing from iOS4. Also apparently some graphical tweaks for still better visuals on the 4's display. did a side by side comparison on my 3GS (old version) and my wife's 4 (new version). Pretty immediately noticeable difference.

they updated the resolution/textures/general visuals too, and it runs butter-smooth. it's really really impressive.

I added this one to the mix for obvious reasons. :D

I haven't installed iOS 4 on my 3G yet. My iPhone 4 should arrive sometime this weekend. If I did a restore from back up on my new iPhone would it revert back to 3.1.3 or would it stay on iOS 4?

Is there a number for the UK? My cousin and I both have an iphone4 but we don't appear to be getting the facetime icon for each other. Has anyone else experienced this?
It shouldn't make a difference, but im on vodafone and he's on O2...

EDIT: Nevermind, didnt realise that I had to activate it through the settings first.

Though it would be cool to get a similar number for the UK
