WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

I haven't installed iOS 4 on my 3G yet. My iPhone 4 should arrive sometime this weekend. If I did a restore from back up on my new iPhone would it revert back to 3.1.3 or would it stay on iOS 4?
It puts your stuff into your new phone's iOS4. It doesn't backup the OS itself.

yeah, the screen is awesome. I was doing A/B comparisons on web pages and here's what I found:

1. at normal distance there is a "just better" factor. You might not be able to put your finger on it, might not instantly jump out at you, but the 4 screen is unquestionably the better screen in a blind test.
2. at NORMAL DISTANCE you can make out finer detail when you look at it. A great example is a normal 10pt web page. at normal viewing distance the normal type is unreadable on a 3GS, and at closer examination you can see that it is actually rendered unreadable. It is all a blur even right next to your eyes. At normal distance (and with great eyesight) you can still read the 10pt text on the 4. Right next to your eyes you can see that every letter is perfectly rendered on the four.
3. at closer inspection you can start to specifically see some of what you started to notice in point 1. No jaggies on fonts. Readable smaller print. Much deeper colors and blacks. No "screen door" effect at close up, and no hazy effect at normal distance, caused by the lower DPI of the 3GS screen.

I don't doubt that 10 out of 10 people would pick the 4 screen when asked which looks better. And that's all that really need be said. No it won't be mind blowing for many. Yes most won't be able to give you a well reasoned why it looks better. But hold it up next to the Evo, 3GS, Droid, whatever.. and I promise you every single person will agree that the 4 screen is just fucking sharp.

anyway, as soon as apple puts up the white pre-orders I'm on top of the 32GB one. But in the meantime I'm fine with my 3GS, and I know when my daughter gets the 3GS (her first phone, currently on a 2nd gen touch) she is going to go through the roof :P

This is what I've been stressing since day 1 compared to everyone blowing their loads over hearing and seeing pictures of the difference. There's no denying that it's nicer, but it's not HOLY SHIT AMAZING nicer.

On a different note, does anyone find the auto-brightness results in dimmer screen levels when turned on and compared to the 3G? My screen is just way too dark now compared to my 3G when I use it at the same setting.

I just tried Real Racing, wow. Anyone thinking the screen isn't holy shit amazing(which is crazy talk) should try it immediately.

Lastly, Marty chinn, i'd like to get your view on the resolution of the iPhone 4 as someone who felt they didn't need or will appreciate the higher resolution (colouring aside).

The screen is just as I expected. It's nicer and I never said it wouldn't be. The thing is we'll never know what the difference in memory usage, performance, and battery life in comparison from using the old screen versus the new higher res screen. I don't deny that it's nicer, but I wouldn't want to give up performance and battery life up for it if it was significant. I was perfectly fine with the old screen. The only thing that I would have definitely wanted was the better viewing angle. Let's say we got a 25% performance boost and 50% battery life increase if the old screen was used instead. Wouldn't you rather have that, especially that battery life?

mrkgoo said:
Ah, thanks - I forgot that the screen is probably bringing it down. Actually, it will charge rom that port if I'm using it, I think, but I was just concerned as it went to not charging when I closed my computer (even though I know it's still powered).

Probably your USB port (unlike many) is high powered and will provide the iPad 10w, but when the laptop is closed it only provides 5w. Enough to charge any normal USB devices, but not enough to charge the iPad when the screen is on.

Okay so I live in Dallas..

and on my 3GS at home my 3G connection got me maybe 1-1.2mb/s..

my iPhone 4 gets 2mb/s on 3G easily..

wtf? Dallas apparently already has HSPA+ since the beginning of the year (we were the first market to get it) but man is it because of the A4? Like was the ARM processor in the 3GS bottlenecking it? This is so odd.. Even my Wifi is faster on the 4 then my 3GS when I use Speed Test App..

This made me laugh..
AT&T is not getting hspa+ until November or so..and iphone 4 will not have hspa+ support.

Where on earth did you get the idea about dallas having HSPA+ in beginning of the year? LOL. Tmobile just got HSPA+ for dallas in June, and they were the first to get it :lol

We did get 4G, but that's sprint/clear.

I dunno, man, I can't agree with that. The display is absolutely jaw dropping. The absolutely cleanest LCD display I've ever seen. The color reproduction, contrast ratio, and resolution completely stomps the older iPhones into the ground and then some.

Yeah, it's not HSPA+, but the iPhone4 is much faster on 3G than my 3GS was.

Download made a nice jump (from ~1.5 Mbps to 2.54 Mbps), but upload is where I saw the biggest improvement. The 3GS gave me like 0.09 Mbps upload while the iPhone4 comes in at 1.50 Mbps. HUGE improvement without any change to the network.

Had a play with one today and I have to say, the screen was extremely good.
It wasn't the sharpness, which at normal viewing distance doesn't seem all that better than my Desire, but the effect of having the screen so close to the glass that did it for me.
It does give off the effect of the text being almost on the surface of the glass which just looks great.

I've never been a fan of the old iPhone look (i think it dated extremely quickly and often looked cheap) but this one is a big improvement. I still prefer my Desire style wise (i really don't like the boring front of the iPhone) but it's the first Apple product that has ever really impressed me.

Everyone at work that's seen this screen gawks at the resolution and the effect of the screen appearing on top of the device rather than under a panel of glass. I don't even say anything, they see these improvements immediately and comment on it. I figure Marty's just being jaded about everything again.

Anyone have a good source for updating album art? Now that the screen resolution has seen such an increase, I'm finding that a lot of album art looks awful.

God fucking damn it. This is such bullshit. I preordered at Best Buy and was number 21 in to get a golden ticket out of 50. Best Buy called me the day before and told me my phone was in and everything was hunky dory. They told me I could come in and pick it up any time the next day.

So I make in to town about 10 minutes from Best Buy and the same douche calls me and tells me I'm sorry I was wrong we don't have your phone. I assumed it was fucking bullshit and went in to the store and they had just given all the phones they had to anyone who came in and had pre ordered.

They only got 25 phones, gave out 50 preorders and didn't pay any heed to the numbers on the tickets or the order they had given them out. My friend who was ticket 47 came in about an hour before me and picked up his phone. Even though he prerorderd a 16 gig model they let him walk away with one of the 32 gigs because he changed his mind. However his preorder sheet was specifically for one of the 16gigs.

Now I have no idea when BB is gonna get more in as Apple scrambles to meet demand. Seriously, fuck Best Buy.

So I'm selling my 3G to some dude on craigslist in order to pay for my 4. What should I do in order to prepare it for selling? I was thinking I could just restore it to factory settings, and not plug it in or something... What steps should i take?

ROCKETEER! Excellent taste my friend

Thanks. :D

The Rocketeer was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. Surprisingly enough, the movie holds up very well even to this day.

I still wish I had this cup from back then:

Well, meet him in a well-lit parking lot with plenty of friends for starters.

Still 3 hour lines at the 14th street store, 5 hour lines at the Soho store. This is ridiculous.

Fifth ave store is out of stock.

Really? I stood in line at the mall near my job for an hour and a half this morning and got one. When I got there, there were about 30 people ahead of me. Of course hadly anyone knew the Apple Stores would have stock today. If I had gotten there maybe an hour earlier, the wait would have been alot shorter.

the screen is a nice improvement, but the massive resolution increase is the least important for my usage. the contrast, viewing angles and proximity to the surface of the device are stunning; the resolution, while fantastic, is lost on me considering how far i keep the screen from my eyes. from a distance of one foot i don't really notice the extra sharpness, and am hard pressed to discern between high-res icons and standard.

like i wrote much, much earlier - i'd rather swap a slight reduction in pixel density for a larger screen size.

Can someone go indoors and pull up the iphone camera? Then aim at anything white. The center of the screen is blue, surrounded by warmer colors. Is this normal for these cameras? If you take a picture you will also see it. It's like the camera is bluer at the center. =/

This sort of reminds me of when I ordered a digital camera for my sister as her Christmas gift in 2007. I ordered it at the Best Buy web site to pick up instead of having it shipped because it was Christmas Eve. I have the order information printed out, and when I went to the customer service to pick it up, it turns out despite the web site claiming the store had this particular model in stock at the specific store I chose, they were out of stock, and I had to sit on THEIR phone in their own store with their customer service rep to get the whole order straightened out and get my credit back because they were out of stock at a bunch of other locations. I'd never been so pissed off in public and haven't since then...

Basically I just wanted to rant about Best Buy with you. :P :lol

hmm, debating whether to buy a 'bumper' or not, may hold out and see if Apple can do anything about the signal, though main reason for a bumper would be so i can put it down on a surface without fearing i will scratch it :D

Is putting a screen protector on the display screen like putting on a condom or will I still get that silky smooth sensation as my finger glides across the screen?

I'm fearing I will lose that if I do decide to wrap it up.

:lol

AT&T will release the phones on Tuesday at their stores and att.com. Until then they are only fulfilling pre-orders. Supposedly, I stress supposedly, Wal-Mart and Radio Shack will start getting shipments Saturday.

If that happened exactly the way you explained it I would take that to a manager and demand some sort of compensation...maybe a BB gift card or a guarantee you'll be the first to get one when it comes in?

Initially I wasn't going to get a bumper, just a clear wrap. But I'm too nervous about handling the darn thing, so I broke down and ordered one this morning (called my local Apple store but they were completely sold out).

Honestly, you'll probably lose that sensation, as you'll no longer be touching glass, but rather a thin plastic (I've ordered one of those, too. I'm paranoid about hurting this thing.)

Nothing is funnier/more horrifying than putting the iPhone on standby after using it and seeing all the smears and fingerprints on the screen after not noticing it during use. Sometimes I feel like I'm not pressing all that hard and I still see some strong smears.

They still haven't fulfilled mine that I pre-ordered June 15th. I don't mean to sound like a bitch, but if I don't have my phone by Tuesday I am going to be pretty angry.

Anyone apply that zagg.com clear armor to their phone? How is it holding up?

The view angle and being closer to the surface are definitely much more appealing to me than the resolution. That could have been addressed without going to the higher res.

It's easier to see when you compare side by side, but if you had never been told, would you really have thought it was such a huge difference or would have just thought it was better? It's the varying degree of better which I had issue with.

Tobor said:

I'm glad the battery life got better, but again we won't know how much better it could have been if the screen was lower res. You're still paying a trade off in performance, memory and battery for the increase in resolution. I've never thought the iPhone 3G screen was terrible, and I'm assuming all you 3G and 3GS owners never bitched until you saw an iPhone 4 where suddenly it made your old screen shit. So I'm saying since to me the resolution difference is only a slight enhancement from a normal viewing distance, that's resolution only and not accounting for view angle and such, that I would have almost preferred better performance and battery over the increase in res.

Thanks for proving your so dense and unable to read. I'm not the only one that has said from a normal viewing distance it just looks slightly better and not HOLY FUCK AMAZING difference. It's not a black and white issue or an all or nothing. You guys were making screen to be like 5000x better where as it's a nice enhancement.

What's funny in all this is that you Apple fans go holy fuck the screen is so godly and amazing and the 3G looks like shit now with all this hyperbole, but when it comes to the antenna problems, it's a slight problem, let's not blow it out of proportion, let's wait and see, you exaggerate how bad it is, and so forth.

Such a contrast in behavior....

Doing the long initial iTunes sync now. I dicked around for a few minutes before starting. Screen is gorgeous, but don't get too hyped. It's still 3.5", so it looks only slightly better at a quick glance, but the details are tremendous when you look for them. In a dark room with no glare on the glossy screen, you could convince yourself this isn't a computer screen.

Fingerprints everywhere.

Don't try to act like you know me. If you're going to get pissy about everyone making assumptions about what a confusing and awkward poster you are, don't try to assume the intentions of anyone else.

It's fucking hilarious how you're trying to lecture us on how we see everything as black and white at the same time you're posting about how you see us all as irrational fanboys. Fuck off, dude. Try to start making sense.
