WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

Eh, it's a little different. Steve's known for being an egomaniac (he famously jobbed Steve Wozniak - who, you could argue, was more pivotal to Apple's foundation). There's a pretty infamous story about him firing a worker that he shared an elevator with, and he's sort of petulant with the way he used to take digs at DELL. Now, I personally think that DELL story is hilarious, but I suppose there's a certain level of courtesy you'd expect from a CEO - but YMMV.

Anyways, some tech folk hold that Wozniak situation against Steve still, I think. Some even to the extent of calling Wozniak the brain that allowed Steve to succeed. Honestly, I think it was a very symbiotic relationship. Apple could not have started without Wozniak's sheer technical brilliance, but it couldn't have succeeded (in the long run) without Jobs leading the way. Let's face it, Steve Jobs is a brilliant showman, and Apple's products continually defy traditional Use Cases.

I suppose we can somewhat relate it to that sort of corporate atmosphere with the Bulls back in the 90s, where it didn't seem like MJ was friends with Pippen and co.

I like that you are relating it to something that I can understand. :lol
So he's just super competitive? And sometimes he lets that get in his way?

So I'm putting together a list to see what I gain from moving from a 3G to an iPhone 4. Am I missing anything?

He also seems to have mellowed somewhat. I guess age, family, and illness does that to you.

You don't get to see it much in a controlled environment, but you do see a hint when he's live on camera with no script. I saw a hint when he was discussing the iPad with Walt Mossberg on the showroom floor.

Some of those items will work on the 3G when the new OS releases, but that is one way to look at your potential upgrades.

Marty, some of those things on your list are coming from iOS 4 which will be free to 3G users. Stuff like Folders and Unified Inbox, etc.

Better video playback support, going from the Low Complexity Baseline to Main Profile @ L3.1. Enables playback of higher resolution videos and some extra features for better compressibility and higher quality.

Yeah, he's clearly not as tense as he was just a few years ago. I suppose facing your mortality and becoming a grandparent gives things some perspective.

Cool, wasn't sure what was and wasn't coming to 3G since I knew multitasking wasn't. It's really more of a list to decide if we're jumping to an Evo 4G or going with an iPhone 4 so those small details help even if they're coming to 3G =)

Yeah. You read about Bill Gates, though, and he and Jobs are remarkably similar. They're known for getting into shouting matches with their employees, almost playing games with them.

It certainly worked so good for them.

HIGHER RESOLUTION

I'm in the same boat, but I'm going to boldify and embiggin the ones that don't even deserve to be on the same list as these are pretty substantial improvements.

HIGHER RESOLUTION

Going to make a decision about this after seeing the handset close up, but I think ill get a no-sim version of this phone rather than the current ipad - I'm hoping now that ipad version 2 will have 2 camera's to not only expand voice com, but also for HD movie capture which would be pretty handy for me on the go next year.

Got to also admit, the white phone is growing on me ~

Yeah, how dare content creators get deserved ad revenue.

Oh come on. Some of them split a one page article into four parts. Fuck them.

I'm all for ad supported content but if they milk it, they get no sympathy.

HIGHER RESOLUTION

Eh, this is the least compelling reason for me. It amazes me how many people think their iPhone displays are suddenly not good and shitty. I thought the iPhone display was perfectly fine. The IPS display has me more interested thanks to the better viewing angles than the higher resolution. I can only imagine at what cost we're taking a hit in performance, fillrate, memory and battery life so that you can have that higher resolution. I'd rather have all of those before having higher res on the iPhone.

I was mostly referring to those sites that ask you to click through for the full article from their RSS stories.

That's fine but clicking through 10 pages to read a "Top 10" is complete garbage.

A lot of people do unnecessary stuff.
Yes, fuck Cracked.com.

They still do:
Another interesting tidbit is that Safari Reader will stitch together multipage articles in this same manner, much to some sites' chagrin. What's cool about Apple's implementation is that once a user clicks the "Reader" button, Safari begins downloading every page of an article in the background and begins stitching them together. It does a full, real, request on a every single page. The publication sees all the pageviews on every page and even ad frames get downloaded for each pageview, which could quell some publisher worries.

Yeah, I understand. The display is big deal to me, though. I don't think the iPhone display is suddenly crappy, but I've seen a lot of better screens. As tech improves, screens are improving past the iPhone. The back of my DSLR is much better than my iPhone for example. I treat my iDevices as a photography portal, so I really appreciate a good quality screen.

I appreciate the IPS too. It's just that 4x resolution is not a minor upgrade. It's HUGE. If it were just 320x480 -> 480x720 (which would be a nice upgrade), but they went beyond all current screen tech.

Viewing angles are hugely important on the iPad, as you do flip it around a lot, hand it to other people, have other people look over your shoulder. I've found the current iPhone screen to be not the best, but serviceable regarding viewing angles. It's such a small device, I'm not normally viewing it on a really askew angle.

I think you'll change your mind about how good the screen looks when you see it in person. Maybe. :p

So, with that new resolution - doesn't this essentially mean that all current apps will look like shit on the new iPhone? Honestly I'm not sure if this was a good idea. It's just a damn phone, the screen is tiny. New resolution seems overkill.

Was talking about this with a mate this morning when I saw the email with the features; was still on the fence. As we were talking I got a call from the place I bought my 3g offering me a free upgrade to a new phone. That was enough for me...

Since it's exactly 4x, old iPhone apps should look exactly the same as they do now.

For example, imagine a green pixel on the old iPhone. It's now drawn using 4 pixels. No difference. The 4 pixels take up the same physical area as the one pixel on the old iPhone.

Unless the rendering engine tries to antialias further or something. I imagine, though, old apps will run in a sort of compatibility mode.

I think they'll only look ugly because everything else on the device will look so sharp, that by comparison, it will look bad when really, it's just the same as it was on the old Phone.

Got iAd working kinda in one of my apps. Doesn't animate correctly yet but (delegate wasn't responding or something) but the basic framework only took like 10 mins.

Hmm. Do you think the reader functionality will make its way to the iPad Safari? now there's a place where it would truly be useful.

Good to know. Might give it a shot tomorrow. Got an idea for an app that I haven't really used yet. Could be the perfect test of iAds

:lol Nice one.

When websites take a simple article and then start splitting it over 6 pages, fuck them, and fuck their stupid revenue. I don't even bother to finish reading most of them.

*If you meant a paragraph in a RSS that requires a click through, then yeah, fine, that's cool. But a webpage does not need to be split at all except as a lame cash grabbing attempt.

I love the new screen, but that capture is perhaps exaggerating the differences.

Just look at the original iPhone Appstore icon. You can't make out the little gaps/lines that break the pen and brush. Check it out on your phone - you can easily see them, but this angle hasn't managed to capture them.

And I think the iPhone 4 shot is somewhat 'blurred', or taken with a camera that can't resolve the pixels. At that level, you should be able to see the pixels.

Edit: Hmm...then again, maybe not. Those are from the same shot. I guess in the end, the shot did capture the very apparent differences.

Ya, but does anyone really see what is being shown on the 3G or 3GS when they hold their phone up to their face? There comes a point where even trying to get too close, my eye can't focus on it anymore and that's within like 2 inches and it still doesn't look that pixelated.

I'm not saying the screen isn't better nor that you won't notice it side by side, but I do think we're over hyping how bad the current screen is.

The current is not that bad -- it's just that it's unfair that a 3 year old screen is put up against the new industry standart.

The next 2-ish weeks will be hell.

Well it will be busy hell at work.
And awesome as hell next week for E3.

So I guess not bad, but I want it right meow. Purrr.

No you can't see the pixels, but that's not exactly the point.

Look at the text underneath your icons. You can read it fine, right? That's because you are actually inferring a lot of shapes and things combined with the antialiasing of the text.

Check out a letter 'e'. Look closely. It's not really a letter 'e'. It's like a 'c' with a grey dot in the middle. I guarantee you that the iPhone 4 screen, it will nearly look like a font printed very small, and not just some approximation.

The original iPhone screen is DAMN fine. But the iPhone 4, I'm guessing, will be the BEST you have seen yet.

Heh, just showed my wife the iPhone 4 vs Evo 4G picture comparison and the first thing she said was, "I thought they made the screen bigger" and I said "no, they just made it higher resolution" to which she replied with "Why? What's wrong with the resolution now? Why can't they fill up some of the empty blank space like they did on the Evo?"

Where we go next will be an interteresting decision =) Clearly she's leaning towards the Evo and I'm leaning towards the iPhone. Thus the list I'm working on =)

That's funny I don't see 512 mb RAM on this list

Still no keynote ? What's going on ? It's usually up by now...

Perhaps they are reshooting all the bits that went wrong.

230dpi - 300dpi is the sweet spot.
