WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

does it have 512MB of ram? that wasn't announced.
it was rumored to have 512 by digitimes about half a month ago but apple made no mention of upgrading the ram. personally I can't see how face time or iMovie can possibly run on there-- especially with an editing program moving pieces of 720p video around-- can possibly run with 256 mb RaM but apple has made atrociously stupid decisionss in their hardware design choices before. Being stingy with RAM would make it the only smartphone between it's competition not holding 512 standard and for multitasking and multiple tabs in safari that's just going to be embarrassing

my big clue that they didn't increase it is that they used the ipads processor and since it runs okay on 256mb then why not ifone 4 ;p

Apple doesn’t publish hardware numbers anymore.
RAM isn't exactly confusing hardware number to print. the're choosy about what hardware numbers they post-- resolution, storage size-- so while you have a good point, I still can't see why they wouldnt coward out and stick with their old numbers

I don't get why. How do developers know what to target for? Why not when someone is going to figure it out eventually anyway?
Do you measure your dick and compare it with friends?

Instead of getting press for #s, they're getting press for the experience and appearance.

Seems like I won't be able to upgrade until late July. Do you guys predict the stocks will be pretty backordered around that time?

You're right, they don' like waving numbers around....

They could easily sell the experience and appearance at the press conference but still list the memory footprint on the specs page, which has tons of numbers, or on the dev site. That's a silly excuse to not publish memory.

Haha touche.

Maybe they don't want a # to be in peoples heads?
"The iPhone has the 1ghz and the Droid has XXX"
"This computer is Pentium 3... this one is Pentium 4" kind of thing.

in fact they refuse to publish it there as well

prove me wrong apple, i'd be glad for it, but right now i have no reason to believe they didn't touch RAM and are planning to sell the ifone 4 on the image alone as always. I want to buy it. I'm even planning on it, but for fucks sake it's embarrassing to have low end specs in a place like ram on a smart phone where it matters

Or they're saving themselves from having it be focused on. I was disappointed to find out how little RAM the iPad had because I knew it would mean a constant refreshing of the four or five tabs I usually have open ;p

This is precisely why they don’t publish those sort of numbers. When I said hardware numbers I didn’t mean storage space, I meant RAM, processor speed, front-side bus speed, etc. Apple doesn’t want people to look at the processor speed of the iPhone and remark that it’s “slow”, because it isn’t slow. It may be slow for a desktop computer but it’s not slow for the iPhone.

September. Always September. Like every single year.

Thank you, I've only ever owned one apple product before so not really up on their release schedules/refreshes and what not.

Not if you use icab!

I just realized something. With the new higher resolution, iPhone apps that have been updated for the iPhone 4, but not the iPad yet will look amazing on the iPad, they won't even need a 2x mode.

Enough iPhone! Where are the XCode 4 information leaks?
NDA NDA NDA :(

Thing is the aspect ratio isn't the same :( Since the resolution is close, devs might as well take the iPhone 4 assets and adjust them slightly to better fit an iPad version of their app.

He still uses the internet. Verizon dude is gone, but everything else is still intact.
In the actual presentation he tries the internet and it doesn’t work, so he goes to the photos, and then he goes back to the internet to try it again and that’s where the Verizon dude appears. The streaming keynote cuts after the photos.

I noticed during the Facetime stuff, Jobs didn't say there will be heaps of iPhone 4's everywhere this year, but "Facetime Devices"

Hello new iPod touch.

Installing the new iOS4 GM on my phone via the developer channel to play with for the rest of the day.

A little bit of Christmas before June 24th. :D

960x640 huh.. That's Modern Warfare 2 resolution right there :p
Gameloft should be able to make a killing with their MW clone then :lol

If I have the dosh in september and they announce the new touch being more or less this without the phone part (and probably without a camera too) i'm all for it.

Design wise the phone looks incredible. But I wouldn't say any of the new features are worth an upgrade from my 3G. Shame they left out the FM Tuner too.

question

will iphone 4 have multitasking from the start or will that be added in a later release of the firmware?

why I am asking is because I just read an articel on a website that said that it would not have multitasking...

I didn't participate yesterday because I always remain spoiler free until the keynote video is posted (which is getting harder and harder to accomplish)

Overall, even though I told everyone there wouldn't be, I'm still bummed that there were no satisfying surprises.

I'll appreciate 720p for home movies, but the rest of it was pretty meh, especially because I've already been using iOS 4 since the beta began.

I'm more than a little annoyed by how limited FaceTime is. That Apple didn't try offering a native OS-wide hook for connectivity with iChat AV is disappointing. The plus side is that third party developers will fill that gap and may even be allowed to do it over 3G.

it will come with iOS4 standard, so multitasking is a go from day one. And what website?

Some things to understand about the new display and resolutions.

300ppi is great, and it's definitely not 'overkill'. High quality laser printers print at 600 dpi. I've done inkjet print tests @ 360 dpi vs 720dpi and I could see the difference in double blind tests. Granted I had to use very specific test prints.

So yea... 600ppi would be definitely be overkill but 300ppi is just brilliant.

The new droid phones are higher res than the original iphone but still half the resolution of the iphone 4g. 300k pixels vs 600k pixels. High end digital camera LCD's like the 5d mkii are 640x480/300k pixels. (or 900,000 "dots" (subpixels) that their marketing ppl seem to like)

A 300 ppi ipad would require a resolution of 2328x1746. That's pretty insane resolution for a device driven by a mobile processor. Current ipads are at 132ppi and I suspect apple's next ipad will be somewhere around 200ppi or so... one day hitting the 300ppi threshold when the technology allows it.

Because of the crazy resolution of the new iphone I think it's totally kosher for apple to label their screen with Market Speak by way of Retina Display. It is at least fairly honest.

This, I hate.

FM radio is cheap to put in a phone.

Goddamn Apple.

My 3G contract just expired and on Spain the iPhone is breaking free from the exclusivity contract with Movistar, so if there's some competition and I get a good discount moving to Voda/Movistar makes a good offer I'm gonna get it.

From the start.

If you use your phone a lot as a camera, and to view pictures and browse the web, the IPS retina display feature looks pretty nice, and probably worthy of an upgrade for $200.

the speed increase alone is pretty compelling (assuming it’s at least as fast as the 3gs).

not everyone will think the screen is a big upgrade, but I think it’s fantastic.

then consider the 3g won’t get multitasking with OS 4.

there’s less reason to upgrade over the 3gs, but for someone at the end of a 3g contract, it seems like a pretty good improvement in every area.
