WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

not everyone will think the screen is a big upgrade, but I think it’s fantastic.

then consider the 3g won’t get multitasking with OS 4.

there’s less reason to upgrade over the 3gs, but for someone at the end of a 3g contract, it seems like a pretty good improvement in every area.

The HD camera is a compelling reason to upgrade as well.

What would the speed comparisons be between this and a 3GS? The A4 should be a good leap?

Maybe a 30-50% CPU performance increase or so. It's basically the same chip (Cortex-A8 CPU/PowerVR SGX 535 GPU) just clocked higher (supposedly 1 GHz vs. 600 MHz). RAM is most likely the same in both, 256 MB.

LCfiner said:
A4 might be a big leap but we don’t know what it’s clocked at and we don’t know if there’s a RAM increase. benchmarks will tell.
The iPad and its A4 is noticeably faster than the 3GS, why wouldn’t the iPhone 4 be just as quick?

I’m watching the stream where Steve intros the new display and when he starts showing comparisons.

I cant see any difference since the video resolution is so damn small. damn you, Apple :lol

like I said, we don’t know what it’s clocked at in the phone. they never mentioned that in the keynote. just saying, there’s no guarantee that it’ll be a big step up from the 3GS as the 3GS was from the 3G.

I couldn't imagine if the A4 produced the same leap as the 3GS chip did. The 3GS is so much smoother and quicker than the 3G.

It's clocked fast enough to playback 720p h264 video. :)

Can the 3GS do that?

LCfiner said:
am I nuts or is this video at 60 fps...
Not nuts.

I thought it was advancing frames too quickly to "catch up" to itself or something, but it was moving all smooth like and matching the audio fine.

60FPS it twas.

Im seriously considering switching to the cheaper data plan. I just realized that every place i regularly go has Wifi that i automatically connect to without thinking about it. Also, i have used a grand total of 4.6 GB since last August.

I stand to save hundreds.

Yeah, I wouldn't count on it.

Isn't the A4 used in the iPad? The iPad is definitely not significantly faster than the 3GS. They feel remarkably similar. I'd also argue that the higher resolution is going to hold the performance back a bit as well. That seems to be the case with the iPad, at least.

I don't think speed is going to be a particularly great reason to upgrade. It's all of the other features that make it worthwhile.

Can the 3GS do that?
Probably. You wouldn't see any real benefit due to the lower screen resolution, though, but I'm sure it could handle it.

Can the 3GS do that?

Yes. It's exactly the same HW H.264 decoding silicon in the 3GS/iPad/4, Imagination's PowerVR VXD. It'll do High Profile at pretty decent bit rates.

good point. I don’t think so:

3GS

Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

4

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

can’t see max bitrate for h264 playback.

I am moving to Japan in August, I think I am definitely gonna get an iPhone 4 when I'm there...I just hope it ends up being cheaper in Japan because iPhone isn't very popular there, haha.

If you use your phone a lot as a camera, and to view pictures and browse the web, the IPS retina display feature looks pretty nice, and probably worthy of an upgrade for $200.

Camera is certainly nice, but again not something I'd pay lots of money for. I'm in Australia by the way so I'd be buying the phone outright on no plan or subsidization. So I imagine I'd be looking at 800 dollars or so.

Again, the speed would be nice. I often get angry at my phone for how slow it is. But again, not for close to a thousand dollars.

I'm not shitting on the phone though. As I said before design wise it looks amazing and looks like every cent of that amount of money. Not having a basic thing like an FM tuner disappoints me though.

ah, gotcha. not getting a subsidy with the phone changes a lot.

heck, I won’t be getting it if I can’t get a subsidy 6 months early in time for launch (in canada)

This update was clearly not driven by performance. Steve would have brought it up, guys. There would be 1.5x or 2x signs all over the place.

The iPhone 3GS IMO is/was the first iPhone to actually have really capable hardware to handle the iPhone OS with confidence. It still is incredibly smooth on OS4 (while the 3G chokes on OS3), and I can't see it slowing down anytime soon, at least until Apple does a major revamp on iOS.

It's a great phone. It even got the full OS4 update :D

I wonder how capable that makes iPhone 4 now.

I noticed during the Facetime stuff, Jobs didn't say there will be heaps of iPhone 4's everywhere this year, but "Facetime Devices"

Hello new iPod touch.

That would be sweet.

Yeah he said "Tens of millions of Facetime devices shipping this year". I think that's a strong hint we'll see it in the 4th gen Touch.

Wait no fm tuner?

No, and for the life of me I just can't understand why people want one so badly. What is it? When do you or would you listen to FM radio? I don't even listen in my car anymore (specifically because I have an iPod plugged in to the stereo). Are you really going to listen to it at home or on the go, when you have access to all of your music; music that you actually chose and like? Weird.

Damn you GAF. I believe I am going to pay the 80 dollar ETF in July to Sprint and switch to AT&T even though I am going to catch so much flack from my parents. :lol But it will feel good, cause then my dad will be paying 25 dollars less a month on my account. This would allow me to be a little more independent. As a soon to be AT&T owner, any tips or stuff I should know? Living in DFW area.

Anyone have a Game Center nickname they feel like sharing?

Curious to link up with someone and see what type of functionality exists without any type of games in place.

Mine's predictably: RubxQub

My car can play songs from the iPhone without even plugging it in at all!

But I still listen to radio, you get the shows, live talk, etc. But doesn't it have that I <3 Radio app? Guess it's not quite the same thing, but I hear about that one a lot.

I use WunderRadio if I need/want to listen to regular radio, but I'm sure there are a slew of radio apps out there.

Are only devs able to reserve names at this point?

It has unique specifications, from the screen to the cameras to the gyro. Especially the screen, my god the screen.

Is there a word on a Japanese release date?

It appears the accounts are truly e-mail based, however you can assign a nickname.

Not sure if it's going to mandate unique nicknames or if it'll just authenticate against the e-mail directly, but it allows me to change my Nickname in my account currently.

It's also listing Game Center as existing in "Sandbox", so I'm pretty sure this isn't the live environment.

I need to buy this as the Home button on my 3G stopped working, but I don't really want to stand in line. How did the online ordering work last time? Do you sign a new contract online?

I find it funny they come out with an ipad that has an A4 processor then 2 months later come out with a phone that has the same processor. It's like they took an ipad, shrunk it, added a phone and two cameras.

well ... that kind of how CE tech normally works

If every aspect of a device was custom, we wouldn't own many devices

Says you can pre-order it to be shipped to your home address for release day delivery, I'm thinking I'll go to the store because I'll be switching from another carrier to AT&T and I want to keep my #.

Says you can do all that from iTunes, but I just feel there'll be problems, and I'd rather have the rep handle it! If you pre-order online, it also says you can pick it up in your local store starting on the 25th, not the 24th, so I imagine the lines would be less crazy.

Also, I noticed you can reserve appointments online with an Apple store. How does that work? Can you just reserve a 6pm appointment for the iPhone (you can), but does that mean you walk in and skip the line with someone waiting to help you because you had an appointment?

Damn...I hope I can recreate that level of quality on the thing, because those look boss.

...like "I don't need to carry around a compact camera anymore" levels of boss.

From what other people who've previewed a little on the phone have said, you will be able too, other impressions all have commented that the camera is wonderful for a smart phone.

As someone whose first iPhone was a 3GS, how easy is it to upgrade? I remember putting a little sim card in this thing but what all does it do? It just makes the phone work right? My contacts are synched with Mobile Me, so does it store them or what? Sorry if this seems obvious.

Is there a direct feed example of the 720p video the phone can record online yet?

I love this phone, it'll be nice to get rid of this 3G and it's battery that's on life-support.

Anyone have tips for selling a phone that had s near dead battery? Should I sell as is letting the buyer know or get Apple to swap it out first and eat the cost?

When you get your new iPhone, you'll just hook it up to iTunes and it'll sync everything you tell it to, then you go into the phone's e-mail and add your MobileMe account and tell it to sync all your contacts/bookmarks/calenders/etc and you'll be up and running just like you're used to.

The only nag is going to be re-arranging all your apps again, but at least you can do this in iTunes directly instead of the phone.

Do you even know what 4G is?

Hint: It doesn't exist yet.

yes it does, or at least the pre-4G hybrid that is conventionally referred to as 4G does; WiMax, LTE, and UMD (EV-DO Rev. C) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G

what the fuck is this new grade of stainless stell? Magic steel?

Can't wait for the iPhone 4Gs coming 2011 =D

There are many grades of steel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_grades

It's an alloy, so the ratio of elements, etc. can be varied a fair amount.

For a real world example, go compare a high quality stainless knife or other such piece to that tinfoil crap they call stainless steel on consumer appliances. Or, if you have access to commercial stainless appliances, compare them to the consumer ones.

So the little tab type thing I put inside with the AT&T logo on it, I wouldn't need to remove that when re-selling it, right? It just allows the phone to work but isn't necessarily tied to me or my account? Just a bit confused by that.

I'd just reformat the phone to clear everything off and that would be it?

Nuclear Muffin said:
I need more than 32GB of storage dammit!

I'd gladly trade the gyroscope or the screen for double the storage space. That's what really annoys me. They go overboard with things you don't need and skimp on the one thing I need the most :lol

You are making an assumption that the costs would be equal. I suspect that's not the case.

You should just hold onto the SIM card. Whoever you're selling it to should have their own SIM or get a SIM from their carrier.

Over here in the UK the Iphone is the clitoris of phones........

Every twats got one......:D

Seriously I was sat with the lads in a bar on Saturday and there was 5 of the fucking things on the table, gods knows how everybody went home with the correct phone, especially after a good gallon of beer or so.....

Its for that reason that you'll never see me with one.
