WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

I added you on Game Center, btw.

Seems like all I can do right now is unfriend you or report you. :lol

I've decided for a few weeks now not to go without a screen protector on my 3gs... we'll see how it goes.. for all of the worry I've had, all of my previous protectors have ended up having to be replaced because of small scratches, and it's my understanding that those protectors are incredibly easier to scratch than the iphone's actual glass. so if I can go months with only a minor not very deep scratch on an easy to scratch protector, I'm pretty confident the phone will be fine. Don't have a case on the back.. small micro scratches there but nothing major, and I LOVE not having a case on my phone. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Though I'll probably get the bumper case for the iphone 4 (which WILL be pre-ordered next Tuesday.. I have a feeling this is going to be the fastest selling iphone yet and don't want to get to the store on saturday only to be turned away after standing in line for 2+ hours)

Well, honestly, I'm not expecting any significant discounts on the devices. But ~30% of accessories, voice plans, and data plans is not something I'd risk sacrificing by ordering via Apple instead of AT&T.

I've never had an iPhone, so I don't really know anything about how strong the glass is, but I'd rather not take any chances.

As for Apple's customer service, they've already been pretty fucking horrible for me. I've been using various iPods for the past 7 or so years, and I've never found their "genius bar" to be useful, efficient, or even all that honest. I had a hell of a time exchanging my 5.5gen iPod Classic a year or two after I brought it home, turned it on, and realized that it had a smattering of dead pixels. Not to mention their bullshit over-the-phone customer service that tried to charge me $35 just to fucking talk to someone when I last had an issue.

i've bought both of my iphones at at&t stores at their respective launch days and, trust me, it's pretty seamless regardless of what most people will lead you to believe. i assume they'll be doing a preorder on june 15th at the at&t store locations, they'll get a good number of those on the 24th, and some will be delivered on a later date to the store. (like whenever the 3G came out.) it's not much different than doing a preorder anywhere else.

if i DID have an apple store that wasn't 90 miles away, i'd consider going there though because they will, in fact, have much more on release day in the way of actual numbers. if you don't want to wait past release day, and if you get a discount on the equipment because of work, i'd suggest perhaps making a separate trip to the at&t store to buy accessories because you won't get a equipment discount on the phone itself.

The oleophobic coating helps, and I'd rather have a little glare than diminish the image quality.

Where can you sign up (I am a registered iphone developer... downloading the beta SDK right now)

Once you've got 4.0 installed on your phone, just open up Game Center and register your account.

Not sure if there's any offline method for now.

And nobody knows how that screen will look like in real world use (unreadable in sunlight maybe) but that doesn't stop Apple blanketing us with specs about it and people praising those specs before they've used the screen themselves. The Megapixels of the camera don't say much about its quality but Apple will be the first to tell us about the spec anyhow. But RAM, a spec which actually matters? Back to being secretive. There is no reason to give Apple the benefit of the doubt here when they have a track record of being skimpy on RAM. It's the Developer conference for erissakes, they do need this information to develop for the device. Stop defending Apple and letting them get away with this when it's in the consumer's and developer's interests that there be a spotlight on how much RAM the devices have.
Uh, you can immediately see the screen quality difference and its impact on the user. For the camera, Apple even downplayed the benefit of megapixels and explained in layman's terms how they improved the camera and showed real examples of it.

It's just like the 3Gs. They didn't really say anything about what made it faster (unless you were a nerd and knew the common hardware in the device). Users just knew that it was faster when they used it and they liked it. Saying "it has 256 MB of RAM" means nothing, especially in cell phones where we don't have a historical measurement of how appreciable that added RAM would be to speed like we would know in PCs.

I'm not defending Apple. I'm defending sanity in spec wars.

I wonder if these accounts will be reset when it goes live. I doubt it.

No one really needs an iPad :lol

We have several at the office, they are nice but if the new phone is better hardware why bother? Screen size yes but I have plenty of larger monitors around the house if I need more screen.

Cool thanks! :D

Probably going to be Flo_Evans if they allow "_"

I see a mention of "Sandbox" in it right now, so perhaps I'll have to re-register. As it is, I can't get it to send me a proper verification e-mail to confirm my account (it seems to crash the app) so I'm guessing that I'm not truly registering with the service just yet.

Saying you have "larger monitors around the house" misses the entire point of the iPad. There are use cases where the iPad is far superior to the iPhone, even with the hardware bump.

I'm not saying you should buy one, just that increased iPhone specs are a worthless factor in deciding.

Macs have always benefited (moreso than PCs one could argue) from more RAM. Because of their architecture/OS they have always happily used all the available RAM you could throw at it. I don't see why the phone OS would be any different.

With proper memory management 256MB may be plenty, but I get low memory warnings all the time on my 3G with 128MB.

I didn't say I wouldn't appreciate more RAM.

Explain that shit to my mom and I'll agree with you that RAM numbers on cell phones matter. You even see GAF posts with guys thinking upgrading their RAM is going to do what the GPU does. Regular people just don't know or care. They just know if it feels good when they use it.

Oh I get the point, I may still get one... or a netbook. Or a macbook. :D

My main issue with my iPhone is speed/crashing (presumably from low memory...) I was fine with the "low res" screen on the old one.

Easier to demo than explain, I just open a large (porn) website and show your mom how it crashes the browser. :lol

This is going to be my first iPhone and I'm planning to go to the Apple Store to pre-order one on the 15th. Based on the iPad pre-orders experiences, should i expect a big line in front of the Apple Store for pre-orders ? I'm planning to go one hour before they open.

Just pre-order online. They'll guarantee you one on launch day, and you wait in line then.

You can pre-order online for pick up in your local store.

Edit: beaten...

I believe the pickup date for pre-orders is June 25th, not the 24th.

From what I read new apple products don't become available until around 5pm on launch day which is maybe why this is the case.

Why not just have it shipped to you? It's free shipping and you'll get it on the 24th. Standing in line is for suckers.

I'm very late to this thread, but can someone clue me in if some of these have been discussed or answered already.

- On their conference video, Iphone 4's screen looks quite a bit darker than the 3GS screen. Darker in a way like when the backlight is turned down on 3GS. Was it just the backlight difference or is the new screen with smaller pixels not allowing as much light to come through, due to smaller pixels?

- The fillrate for gaming, how is it going to be affected with four times more pixels to draw now? The A4 chip as far as I know has just the same Pover VR graphics chip in it as the 3GS one, just clocked higher on Ipad - but since they never mentioned 1GHz for Iphone 4, we don't even know if the graphics hardware in this will be faster at all. This is very worrying to me since 3GS is a bit fillrate starved as it is, and I've heard the problem is even worse on Ipad, so this has the potential to be really bad. But I guess heavy graphics games could be continued to be made in 320x480 resolution, it's not like they would be affected all that much visually by that as they look fine on this screen size as it is.

I would, but I imagine you need to be home to sign for the delivery, so my luck it'd end up constantly being "no one home to sign" and I'd have to wait the 3 failed attempts for it to stay at the local fed ex / post office to pick it up.

I just felt like throwing a reason out there, who knows what other reasons one may have.

Will you be at work? Have it shipped to your work address.

Can't say I noticed any darkness. Maybe auto brightness is more aggressive, though?

I've not had any issues with this so-called filtrate.

Things run well for me.

If there's 512MB RAM in the iPhone 4 powered with the A4 chip do you think we'll be seeing a lot better looking games?

Oh, Telus....

- Caller ID: $8.00 per month (was $7.00)
- Call Forwarding: $3.00 (was $2.00)
- Local 5 Favourite Numbers: $15 (was $10)
- Nationwide 5 Favourite Numbers: $20 (was $15)

Last year they allowed reservations on the 3GS, but not pre-orders. This time it says you can do both, which is what they did for iPad launch. So that makes me wonder whether they'll allow you to order and have it shipped to you in addition to reservations at an apple store.

BTW, when I reserved the 3GS I waited in line for 15 minutes tops, and for the iPad it was 5 minutes. :) This time I'll be pre-ordering and getting it delivered if that ends up being an option.

How does GameCenter registration work? Is it using your Apple ID or are you registering a username separately kinda like Xbox LIVE?

:D That's a very good reason to take the day off. You should have mentioned that earlier (did you?) when that other poster was getting on your case..,

@Liu Kang yeah the spec wars can get insane but it takes two to tango. I thought posters here were asking about the RAM to compare it to Apple's own history of cell phone devices not start a pissing contest with HTC/Palm/Windows folks *shrug*. And developers do need this info. They had to wait until they purchased the iPad themselves before they could figure it out. Frankly it prevented many of them from making, and optimizing, good apps.

I'm watching the WWDC podcast on my iPad and can't see the screen difference in the demos. Apple should have released a higher quality video?

Did they ever say how much ram this thing had?

ALSO. As long as incase slider and powersupportusa release iphone4 products i will be all set, and not have to spend another 6 months finding the best case.

powersupportusa has the best anti glare screen protector out. No glossy greasy look

What runs well for you?

I know there have been some minor performance issues on the iPad. Some games which were actually 60 fps on iPhone 3GS, for instance, run slower on iPad despite simply upscaling. Framerates in a lot of iPad games have also been pretty slow as well. The high resolution screen sounds awesome, but I wish they had upgraded the GPU a bit as well.

I don't think ram will be a limiting factor, the PS3 only has 256 megs of ram (512 if you count the GPU).

I imagine it's going to be the lack of dedicated 3D hardware and speed of the A4 chip that are the biggest factors limiting games.

Yeah, the stream right now isn't the best quality. I couldn't tell from the video either.

So we should expect this to be similar to the 3GS in terms of specific carrier lockouts (locked in the US, unlocked in Australia), correct?

Thanks all, online it is. I'm still debating in going to the store for pick-up or have it delivered. The online ordering opens at midnight on the 15th or opens between working hours ?

If it helps. I ordered my 3gs on apple.com as soon as we could and got it day 1 at like 11am.

Im waiting to see the checkout options on apple.com before i decide. If they dont let me keep my current plan then im going to have to go in to att and do it so i can keep unlimited data

Yeah, Apple definitely fucked up here. Should've offered a 720p version of the conference. Check out some of Engadget's videos/pictures of the screen, its immediately noticeable.

I read something about the new iPhone 4 not being compatible with the existing docking sizes, so will we need all new accessories for this iPhone?

Docking, as in the connection? Or docking, in terms of the shells and moldings of products to fit the iWhatever in snuggly?

Never heard of Negri Electronics. Pardon my ignorance but is this legit? I'm assuming it's based outside the US judging from the grammar in the "brought you by:" bit. If it's legit I'm plopping down the cash right now since where I live, i'll be lucky if I get one in 2011.

Docking as in if you had a stereo that sits a iPod / iPhone or an extra battery that plugs in to the bottom of your iPhone 3GS, it won't fit the iPhone 4?

Minsc said:

Yep Apple announced a new dock but they haven't put up pictures yet. If you wait a bit, third parties will probably create adapters so you can fit your existing accessories with the new phone

One accessory I wanted Apple to unviel is a (stereo) bluetooth headset. With the much improved battery life on the iPhone 4 and iPad, I'm more inclined to turn Bluetooth on...

It'll fit, it just won't be molded to the iPhone 4's contours. Most stereos and docks come with little trays that are shaped to match different iDevices, so the companies may make one you can request.

Is it just a new dock to accommodate the new form factor? Or is a whole new connector (BAD!)?

Do you guys bring you iphone without screen covers/back covers?

Damn. I had a back/screen cover since day one, and the phone looks like it was taken out of the box, but the covers are full of small scratchs and shit. I don't know how you could end with it without them. No soft covers or anything? Just the naked iphone on your pocket/bag?

Damn.

For reference, this is the state of my back cover, 3gs 1 year old:

You can see all the small scratches. It's been alwats on my pocket or on my bag.
