WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

I'm hoping for some surprises. Apple really hasn't done anything surprising since the the original iPhone. Any rumors of more functionality for OS4 apart from iChat?
I guess there'll be a couple of hardware/OS surprises for the new iPhone-only, like the Compass, video editing etc last year.

I thought the iPad was pretty surprising in how unsurprising it was.

They actually did sort of do this when the 3GS came up; folks who previously had 7/1/09-9/30/09 upgrade dates were generally pushed up to have 3GS discount eligibility. (Sauce: http://www.businessweek.com/the_thr...ds_to_critics_eases_iphone_upgrade_rules.html )

Yes, if I remember that was mostly for customers that spend over $100/month on their bills. I bought a 3G at launch and didn't get the subsidized pricing when I got the 3GS on launch day cuz my bill was around $90. This time around they're extending it to way more customers. Pretty impressive.

No one at AT&T knows shit except the suits. It's like taking advice from a Gamestop clerk.

Well, the woman didn't say "yep, June 18th!!" it was more "Hm, well, our manager has us looking towards the 18th as a placeholder date, but it could be earlier or it could be later. We're not sure yet, and we won't know until tomorrow."

It is impressive. But given that AT&T are bastard coated bastards with bastard filling, it makes me wonder what we don't know (i.e. imminent Verizon availability and attempting to hook people for 2 years at the new higher $350 ETF).

Yeah, this feels reactive to imminent VZW announcement.

Pretty much---

The funny thing is you've got people who either:
A) Just got the Droid
B) Just got the Droid Incredible
C) Just got the 3GS
D) Just left AT&T for either A or B
E) Just left VZ for C in order to get.....
F) ucked by ETF fees and other bills of which no person should have to pay but companies need money too.

Yeah that conference was a yawner. But i'd attribute that more to the fact that we already knew how the iPad would work, generally. Steve showed off the most basic functions, and none of that was new - we'd been doing that stuff since mid-2007. There weren't a lot of wow moments there.

At least for iPhone 4, the video calling thing will be completely new. Then again, last year at the 3GS introduction I don't think a ton of people thought it was that amazing a step-up from the 3GS. This might not be much different than that. Can't wait to see how snappy this thing is with the A4 and what the battery life will be.

Do you guys only have 2 year subscription contracts in the US? Sorry for my ignorance but here in Denmark we only have 6 months subscriptions for private contracts.

That is the period in which our carriers will subsidize a phone purchase.

ATT is suddenly acting scared. There's no way they are cutting customers slack out of the goodness of their heart. God I hope this is the case.

It would be nice, but I am not getting my hopes up.

BUT

If Verizon does get the iPhone this year, I will count down the days until I am eligible to upgrade from my current phone to the iPhone with data.

has there been any news about Verizon employees having vacation blackout days or anything similar to ATT employees?

That was kind of the point but the iPad conference wasn't organized very well. Steve took too long showing off browsing the web or whatever and then they debuted double-scaled iPhone apps before native iPad apps, which was a decision I'll never understand.

The "and" part would be the best. Get the phone on as many carriers as possible.

from a business stand point, could you imagine the iPhone on most of the US carriers? It would sell like crazy.

That is the point. That is what Apple needs to do in my opinion. They still have the mindshare of the general public of having the coolest phone, but in the tech circles Android stuff is the cool new kid and it is everywhere. If Apple wants to continue to dominate they need to be everywhere. If that happens I am fine with them keeping older models around just to put it on other carriers, like one gets the 3GS, the other gets the 4.

And yes, it would sell like a madman. Market domination assured at that point.

Talked to someone at att and buying the new iphone you will get to keep the unlimited, however last year when I bought my 3gs online i had to select a data plan, so i may have to go into the store and buy it this year, because buying online will cancel the unlimited data plan :(
unless they add a keep existing plan button

Buckethead said:
With their revised data plan? No way.

They'll probably encourage 3G. That way AT&T can get their $$$.

Possibly.

But we're talking about AT&T here. So logic isn't necessarily on the table. I just have no faith that they are going to go all in with such a thing right off the bat. But I'd happily be wrong about that.

Sentry, I usually like what you've gotta say, but I think you're on crack with this post. :lol

There is a certain quality Apple holds its designers too, and that is nowhere near it. If Apple decides to use Myriad Pro Black on anything, I'll take a 2 month ban.
Yeah.. looking at it again and re-visiting the Apple site, you're right. Didn't look at it thoroughly enough. How awesome would colored iPhones be though? Sell like hotcakes.

PS. I REALLY hope it's not called iPhone HD, and even though 4G is logical it would be confused with network 4G.. so all that's left is iPhone A4 for the chip it's using/Apple's 4th iPhone. :P

Yeah I could see that considering most of the time it'll be in private for business conferences and seeing your kids, etc. who knows.

Is the dialing #NEW thing only for AT&T customers? Only in the US? Dialing #639 is not working for me.
It's *639#

And about that, what does it mean if my return message reads "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and waive the 18$ upgrade fee". I see everyone else posting dates, but I didn't get a date. What does that mean?

EDIT: Yes that's the right one. Thanks Vyer

hopefully it means that come time for the release of the 4G that we can upgrade to it for $18+199/299.

Does AT&T just let the phone cost go to your bill and you pay it in full whenever it's next due?

+1 for the early upgrade iPhone owners. Mine isn't supposed to be until November, but it says now on my phone. Cool fucking beans.

QUESTION
(S)

When you get a new iPhone (I currently have one):

1. How does it work if you get a new phone in the middle of your current billing cycle?
2. Do you have to pay another activation fee?

Mine's not till Feb 2011 :-(

I guess it's probably because I have the cheapest voice / text plan
you dialed the number above? i got my iphone in April 2009 and am eligible for the nearly free upgrade to the 4G.

I just dumped my iPhone/AT&T for a Evo 4G at Sprint. I wasn't willing to stick with AT&T no matter how good the new iPhone is. Too expensive, no 4g coverage until 2011, and too expensive. Verizon rumors are nice and all. I was on Verizon before AT&T and they were also way too expensive for my tastes, though the service was very good. Sprint plans are nice though which attracted me to them. Maybe if the new iPhone ends up on Sprint, and has something that makes me want it significantly more than the Evo, I might give it a look. Still looking forward to the announcement tomorrow though.

Oh yeah, AT&T fuckin sucks.
