Xbox 360 Live demo availability thread

There should be a Frontlines Demo coming up within the week. I say this because I got a copy of the demo from gamestop and normally they go on live a little after that.

Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom demo is up.

It's fully playable in English, yet only available on the Korean Marketplace.

Any sites with a guide on how to make a korean gamertag?

Orange Box is one of the most pathetic demos I've ever downloaded. For crying out loud, I think I got to shoot...2 zombie head crabs?

I was looking to be sold on the game, and wasn't.

So I got OXM today and they have a Culdcept Saga demo? Is that another OXM exclusive demo cause I didn't see anything up on marketplace or in this thread.

I played through KUF with both characters. Seems like a solid hack and slasher. Blueside's finally nailed the feedback loop for combat, so hitting enemies has a nice satisfying feel to it whereas previous games felt kind of floaty and insubstantial.

The only really worrying thing from the demo is how much depth character development will have. There are only 3 stats (HP, SP and Luck). Weapons also have an attack stat. Armor doesn't even have defense, it just gives varying levels of HP. The spell trees seem shared between the 2 characters in the demo as well with only a couple of unique ones per character.

It was definitely fun, but I don't know what kind of legs it will have. It's really hard to judge that kind of thing from a demo though.

You're pretty right.
On the other hand, it did a good job of proving to me that at least Episode 2 played and looked like an Xbox 360 game and not just a port of a 3-year-old PC game.

I've been following this title because it has some interesting history. The game was made by former members of the Battlefield Desert Combat mod team, who were fired by EA after they worked on Battlefield 2.

True, I was trying once again to get sucked into the Half-Life universe, I was never a fan (For some reason I kinda like Opposing Force though) and outside the cool premise of the game (Dimensional alien invasion etc)...I always thought the games themselves were HUGELY overrated.

Too much forced point A to point B stuff and I HATED the vehicle crap.

Anyway, the game is gorgeous, a shame the gameplay itself bores the living bejeezus out of me.

And I'll pass on Portal, its not for me either.

Still, I wonder how that demo got on Live. I wonder how they came to the conclusion that the demo was a good representation of the game for anyone who isn't aware of Half-Life's reputation in gaming. I can't see casual 360 shooter fans having favorable impressions of the game after going through that demo. womp is right. You barely kill anything. The moment that more enemies pop up, they are killed by those huge green bugs. It also doesn't help that the chick also takes some kills away with her gun too.

There is enough game in that package that they could have made it longer. The PC demo I played a few years ago had more levels.

For those that want to know about the Frontlines demo: Pretty awful.

After playing FPS titles such as Half Life 2, Halo 3, and COD4, Frontlines just can't compare in the control or gameplay department. The controls are the worst thing, not as bad as Hour of Victory, but pretty close. You will definitely want to adjust the slow reticule speed as soon as you start the game. Then you run into another problem as there is no happy medium between sluggish and too fast for cursor movement. This could change but as of now you can't map buttons, only select presets. As it stands, the controls look like this:

LT: Throw a grenade like you have a broken wrist.(seriously)
RT: Primary Fire
LB: Reload
RB: Sprint - barely faster than your normal sluggish movements
RS- push in to use scope
Y- change weapons
A- Jump
X- Can't remember what it was for other than objectives
B- Melee

COD4 and Halo 3 have shown me that RB should be reload, LT should be zoom, and clicking RS should be sprint. This is a perfect setup, let me map them KAOS studios.

To pick up weapons you have to hold LB, yet you have to hold X to pick up objectives. Some of the weapons are RC cars with C4 attached that control like a shitty Warthog. You use LS for gas, and right stick to turn. The RS controls though don't seem to be analog, you are either turning the cars fully or not turning at all. It gets really frustrating when you only need to turn your car a few degrees to get under a tank and you wind up going in circles.

Another little weapon is a RC helicopter which apparently can fire rockets that destroy almost anything. The controls on the heli are a little easier but the rockets have to hit dead on to register damage. For such a huge explosion the heli's rockets do no splash damage, but when they hit they destroy anything.

The standard rifle you start with is pretty boring and has crazy kickback. Just pulling the trigger once gives you a spray of 4-5 bullets and your reticule winds up 2 feet above your target. You also get a grenade launcher which is pretty decent.

Just before the demo ends you get to control a tank that can repair itself if you don't take damage for a while, just like your characters health. The controls on the tank were better than the RC car but not by much. Halo has spoiled me on vehicle controls.

The graphics were good since KAOS used UE3.(surprise) The voice acting and cutscenes were passable but shown in an aspect ratio narrower than 2.35:1. It was weird seeing so much blank space on my 16:9 TV.

Pros:
Good Graphics
Decent Voice acting

Cons:
Crappy controls for character and vehicles
No button mapping
Sluggish, uninteresting gameplay
Feels like I've done it all before

I was really looking forward to this game thinking it could be an awesome battlefield-like game for consoles. Battlefield on 360 kinda sucks, so I was hoping the 32 player on XBL for this title would rock my socks. Sadly, this demo has all but crushed my hopes for this game.

Those aren't the COD4 default controls at all though

Notice I did not mention COD4 by itself. I meant between playing those two games I have formed my preferences. Halo 3 made me love RB reload while COD4's choice of LT aim is perfect. I map my games accordingly, if they let me.

It already got its own thread, but to keep this topic updated too:

Why not just go check rather than bump this?

Yeah sorry for the bump, forgot about that. Umm because then I'd have to hook up my 360 first, and this is easier :).

But thx anyway

for some reason I can't download some demos on Marketplace. It started with Frontlines and now with Elements...yet K&L and Ace Combat DL fine.
Its not my drive..tried another and dies same spot on both. Elements for example makes it to 67% and then fails with some message like "failed to download". I tried to "continue" and it doesn't go further, tried deleting and retrying, dies at the same spot.

Any ideas ?

Crap I am at work, and after that I have to go straight to LA. Can somebody post impression on the KUF demo? I am a fan of this series and a hack & slash game doesn't go too far away from my preferences.

A few people posted mini-reviews on the Evil Avatar thread. Looks like a mixed bag, but people who like these types of games seem happy with it. I might pick it up if the demo is amusing and I can find a few friends to co-op with. I don't think I'll slog through on single-player, though.

I would say dont bother with KuF CoD demo. I tried it back when it was released in the korean marketplace, was looking forward as a good fix for hack n slash fans with some rpg touches and was a huge dissapointment, and that´s coming from somenoe who appreciatted and enjoyed N3 even if they have different approaches in terms of gameplay.

The pace is slow beyond turtles and having dozens of items or weapons doesnt seem to make much difference at all. You just have 2 types of attacks and combat is embarrasingly simple, just choose one of those untill you kill all enemies, move to the next section and repeat ad nauseum.

It should be renamed Circle of Boredom and again, i enjoyed N3 and know its a flawed game.

The only good point may be the online coop.

BlueSideLogo/ESRB Online Notice

Splashscreen. Burning letters.

Options include Prologue, which I selected.

Static image with scrolling story:"Light and Darkness, blah, blah, Nible and Encablossa, blah, blah. [Nible? Really?] Out of chaos Heroes rise. The answer lies in the dark dimension, where Encablossa plots his revenge.

Standard settings. Make sure blood is turned on.

Start.

Character selection screen, where you pick a statue of your character. Two choices. I pick Kendal.

Control screen, which I just missed because I was typing.

Cut-scene. Creepy old dudes staggering around. One of them fell down. Cut-scene is "in engine". Got bored with the old man talking, pressed A. Cut-scenes skippable.

Loading (20 seconds?)

My big mace weilding guy is standing in a delicate field of flowers. Drifting dandelions float by, and crickets chirp in the distance. Pretty but too much bloom lighting. When you hit the dandelions with your mace, there's a flurry of fur.

Horrible tearing. Like three or four tears simultaneously, or tears coming so fast it looks that way. Worst tearing I've seen this gen, which is saying something. This would make Evilore's head explode.

You can map weapons and abilities to the face buttons, triggers and shoulder buttons. Standard dual-analog camera controls.

The music is a slow, mournful piano soundtrack. Pleasant, but it seems out of place here.

First fight. Six blacksand soldiers. The attacks feel pretty slow and imprecise. A little worse than N3, I think. I have a fiery mace which sets them on fire, but it's just mapping a fire animation over them, so interaction with the bodies. When they drop items, you have to press Y to pick them up. Why? Why not just simple walkover pickups for this sort of game?

You spend SP with each physical attack. So you can pretty easily wind up without the ability to swing your mace. Maybe this is standard in KuF, but what? Second battle included a blacksand warrior and I figured out I could throw fireballs.

Weapons disappear if you don't pick them up fast enough. You can dual wield. I'm now using a pike and a mace simultaneously, instead of mace and shield.

Wow, that pike uses a lot of SP. Spent most of the fourth fight trying to recover SP. Switching back to a smaller weapon, I think.

Leveled up with a burst of shiny blue light. You get a bunch of points to spread out between health, sp and luck.

So far the game path is entirely linear. Just a path through the woods you can't step off of. No big open spaces so far, but still plenty of screen tearing.

You have red and white potions which restore health and sp respectively. Green antidotes. Potions can be mapped to buttons. The enemies spray blood when they go down.

Lightning throwing blacksand shamans. Some of the spells are pretty cool. Just had black smoky hands reach up from the ground and clasp me for damage. Looks like the AI isn't totally stupid, as two shamans got behind me and I found myself stuck in a fireball shooting gallery. Luckily they are complete pussies.

Fought on a bridge and couldn't knock anyone off the side. You can trade/buy/sell with these goddesses for cash, and sleep to recover your damage. Looks like a ton of different weapons with various effects. Some replenish sp and have status effects on victims. Sort of RPGy.

I rest, which leads me to meet some teacher who can train me in new abilities. Some more story bits that I'm ignoring. Look to be a fair number of magical abilities ranging from an area effect heal to a machinegun cold blast that sprays icicles as long as you have sp left and hold down the button. All this happened in a dream while I was resting apparently.

That's probably more than enough, no?

The combat is fairly cool once you get down the charging attacks and mix up your weapons so you have one that doesn't drain your SP too fast. The problem is its so pure slashy that it feels completely empty. It's actually a lot like Phantasy Star Online, only without the lobbies. So it could be fun in co-op, but I think I might hold out for Too Human, which looks less slow and clunky than this was.
