Xbox Kinect No longer being manufactured.

I really liked the Dance Central games, they actually worked really well. There was some cool Indie games too, like Fru, that multiplayer platformer game, and the DoubleFine stuff was fun. Otherwise though... yeah, pretty rough stuff.

I still have mine and enjoy it for voice commands. I didnt care much for games other than Dance Central for the family.

Unfortunate the masses didnt embrace because it is a great accessory.

Are voice commands through a headset mic a thing on Xbox now? I know on PS4 it is.
I'm asking because I have a Kinect I want to use with my Xbox One X when I receive it. If I could do voice commands with my headset I wouldn't worry about buying the adaptor.

I bet there is one person reading this news with a tear in their eye.

Everyone else is jumping for joy.

The concept of Kinect was exciting initially but that excitement faded quickly when you actually used one. The best thing about Kinect was the voice commands. If they can add that functionality into the console itself going forward I'd be happy. If not no big deal.

As far as Kinect is concerned though? Good riddance.

I don't really understand what MS was thinking with Kinect 2.0." Everybody will have one but we won't be making much for it".

I think they assumed that they’d simply transition generations, as you were, and people would just make stuff for them. The entire entertainment centre and cloud push as a cornerstone had the expectation that they were going to be *the* hub for the front room and kill off PlayStation in the process.

Kinect's biggest mistake was not being 60fps or more.

On Xbox One it was over engineered when they could have just up the resolution & tracking speed & made it useful for head tracking & things like that.

My family liked the sports games and Dance Central a lot.

How about bringing 360 Kinect game compatibility to the one somehow? Either letting the old Kinect work, or letting 360 games work on the new one.

Having them incompatible sucks.

Funny you say that when they recently allowed any 3rd party camera to be used with the XB1. Why not the original Kinect?

I was lucky enough to get into the hardware beta for the original device for the 360. I enjoyed it quite a bit but most of the games that came out afterward had a gimmick like support. The Wii excelled because everything for the system made use of it and it was built into the core of the console.

Outside of the sports game and the racing game it really wasn't worthwhile outside of the facial recognition logins.

I'm still glad the technology came along however. Having two more PC-based Kinect devices made mocap and even limited 3d scanning available to individuals and businesses who didn't have the vast Scrooge McDuck levels of cash for commercial solutions.

We may all laugh at the demise of Kinect, but the gadget sold near to 30 million and probably millions of software.

I remember thinking Dance Central would become one of the biggest games of that gen.

Kinect had a stellar launch and Dance Central seemed to tick all the boxes needed at the time, but I believe it just didn't sell all that great. Nothing except for the pack in game really managed to rake in huge numbers, People seemed to buy into the hype, but then not really looking for more software. Most of it wasn't that great either, ofcourse.

Bummer, I was hoping they'd keep producing some for research and professional purposes... I guess I'll need to find another source for depth cameras then. Hopefully the release of iPhoneX will keep some confidence in the field.

Funny you say that when they recently allowed any 3rd party camera to be used with the XB1. Why not the original Kinect?

I guess they could easily have it be supported as a regular webcam (maybe it already works actually), but for gesture recognition there were some advanced libraries running on both the 360 CPU and GPU, that may not be easy to emulate (or not worth the trouble).

Kinect's biggest mistake was not ditching the camera altogether. They should have used an external mic for voice commands and be done with it. That would have significantly lowered the added cost to the XB1 which was the biggest issue for Kinect.

It sold on the potential of what people thought it could be. Then the reality hit and few wanted to pay a $100 premium for it. That's why the XB1 version bombed so hard.

I'd love to continue using the Kinect onto the Xbox One X but i hate that I have to pay separately for the damn adapter. If anyone has theirs that came for free with the S I'd be glad to take it off your hands. I guess now it makes sense why they're not even continuing the promotion to provide a free adapter with the X. I use it literally every day just for voice commands for controlling my devices. I wish they released a cheap audio-only "Kinect" mic that you can use for that purpose.

Don Mattrick was the typical corporate sleazebag that didn't resonate with gamers at all. He was a huge mistake. But perhaps he was needed since MS clearly wanted to go into Nintendo's direction at the time, and they had Cammie Dunaway selling consoles to everyday people.

The X1 was also supposed to target not just gamers, all of its reveal was about TV and whatever ridiculous stuff. While everyone with half a brain could just know you're presenting a gaming console, even named Xbox. You aren't going to reach further. With Spencer they pretty much went back to what made 360 succesful in the first place. Ironic because most Sony did with PS4 was essentially copying 360, while MS themselves did something awkward with X1.

Wish I got rid of the paper weight before it was only worth $4 at GS for trade lol. Guess I’ll hold on to it, until it becomes rare or something to track down. RIP sweet prince, your voice controls were decent until Cortona came along lol.

It’s for the best. The Xbox customers may have wanted it as a stand alone option from the start but the initial forced bundle killed that. I can not believe how much the Xbox brand has turned around in 4 years. If only they got it right the first time around.

Were there any solid games for the xbox one that used this? I would buy one if it did anything dope.

Disney Fantasia was especially great, and the usual dancing games (Just Dance, Dance Central). Kinect Sport Rivals was competent but not too creative everything considered (except for the "create your avatar" stuff). There are also a few creative puzzle games like FRU.
Unfortunately two of the coolest softwares making use of kinect were discontinued (Xbox Fitness, and Project Spark that let you do motion capture with it).

As soon as they switched their strategy, their support for kinect was lackluster. The OS and the base apps kept losing support for it after each update. Even the sdk for PC and later Xbox development lacked updates and basic features. :/

Co.design is reporting that the Kinect is no longer being manufactured. It was fun while it lasted, but this was bound to happen. Multiple people reporting it on twitter as well.

Ehat most people don’t realize is that Kinect was basically taken down by Sony fanboys, Irrational MS haters, and the paranoid

The device was not in the slightest about gaming this generation. That was merely a side effect.

It was designed to control your home automation, change your channels, order you food or an Uber. And for people to develop for it it, everyone had to have it connected.

Well everything went south because of Sony’s successful beyond their wildest dreams slime campaign, Amazon hired away key members of the team

You now know Kinect as Amazon Echo, a hugely popular device that’s sold millions and millions.

But because people were blinded by hate, and fooled by a marketing department terrified that Microsoft’s Buy/sell/lend retailer integrated digital ecosystem was going to finish them off (Sony’s system locked the actual physical discs to your account, far more restrictive, and they hadn’t even begun to think about retailer integration), they killed their own plans for killing Gamestop used sales and went scorched earth.

The PS4 succeeded with the mainstream, at least in North America, not because of 1080p, but because $100 more expensive and a legion of Gamestop employees trashing Xbox. Sony learned it well during thr HD DVD/Blu-ray Wars. They copied that playbook to a T, it’s just this time it wasn’t flogging vastly inferior technology lacking the support of most of the major publishers.

Just remember that every time you call Alexa, it should have been “Xbox”.

Kinect for Xbox 360 was cool, but very limited. With the Kinect for Xbox One Microsoft weren't able to show why it was important for gaming. Just like Nintendo and the Wii U Gamepad.

Kinect is no longer being manufactured many years after it was no longer selling. I found it to be a terrible product for a terrible platform. I’ve never regretted a console purchase as much as the Xbox One.

A great piece of tech no one cared to bother to make good stuff for because I came out at the time most games went to shit because of yearly releases and super outsourcing.

When I see things like the dad using the Kinect to create a prosthetic for his kid it really bums me out at the possibility for this tech that was wasted on gaming or lack of gaming.

I work in a company that uses Kinect for fitness machines and when I joined I was quite surprised to see that it actually works very well when used outside of games. This news is quite concerning for us because while there are competitors on the market, the quality of the body tracking is not really on par with what kinect provides, at least currently.

This guy completely squandered the momentum 360 accumulated, gave Xbox one a sluggish start.
After absolutely loving my 360, couldn’t believe all the BS coming out of his mouth when they announced it. Kind of saw the transition towards the end of 360 but never would of thought. Finally bought one once they released it w/o Kinect. Barely ended up playing it besides exclusives bc PS4 played games so well. They won me over with the X tho. Can’t wait for it to become my 3rd party/MS exclusive box. Texture work on AC:Origins looks NUTS w/the extra 4gb if available RAM.

Which was the problem when you are trying to sell a gaming device. People didn't want to pay an extra $100 for that, and the Kinect didn't do most of that stuff anyway. Microsoft never made a good case why anyone would want to pay extra for the Kinect. Even today very few people have home automation. Changing your channel isn't a problem in search of a $100 solution and it only worked for live TV anyway. Finally, ordering food, Uber, and so on are better done on an app on your phone.

...
Just remember that every time you call Alexa, it should have been “Xbox”.
You realize the Amazon Echo doesn't cost anywhere near the $500 the XB1 originally sold for right?

Oh and Kinect didn't have anywhere near the capabilities of the Echo. One huge limitation is that it had to turn on your XB1 and TV to communicate with you. That is too much of a time lag and overhead to handle many of the simple requests Echo handles like "Set a timer for 10 minutes" or "What is the weather today?". Fundamentally, the Kinect's extra functionality did not go well in a console package. It needed to be self contained and have the capability to give immediate feedback all by itself. You know...like the Echo.

The PS4 succeeded with the mainstream, at least in North America, not because of 1080p, but because $100 more expensive and a legion of Gamestop employees trashing Xbox.
The XB1 was $100 more expensive because of the Kinect. That is the whole point. If the XB1 sold for $399 at release like the PS4 then your argument would have some merit. Without that, the XB1 was facing a PS4 that cost less and was better at its primary reason for being...playing games. With Microsoft giving up much of their exclusive gaming capability to differentiate itself, the PS4 was the objectively better choice for most gamers based on hardware gaming capabilities alone. I say this as someone who was an Xbox fanboy last generation. Sony didn't do anything to Microsoft. Microsoft did it to themselves.

Should never have existed beyond the first iteration.

It's a cool tech, a cool concept.. But doesn't translate well to games. Couple that with the fact that it was very expensive..you got a recipe for disaster.
