Xbox One and Machinima: Be nice or neutral, and don't tell anyone we're paying you

At times on this forum, people have expressed satisfaction with the xbone's troubles and others have called them fanboys and asked "why would you want the xbone to fail?"

This is why. It's not console wars for me, it's just, fuck Microsoft and all of their shady shit.

Maybe some wantef the Xbone to fail due to the straight up idiotic anti-consumer fucked up policies.

The Ars Technica article links an FTC document which describes almost this exact same scenario. A video game blogger gets a free system from a video game console manufacturer and they have to disclose that they got the system for free in their review.

How does this not apply in the case of actual money?

It definitely applies, broadly speaking. The specific terms of non-disclosure in the agreement are critical though, and I'm not an expert in this field- but I assume that there's a construction that would give them some leeway here.

i feel like it's all the same shit. what they're doing here, the genesis of those policies all derive from the same fucked up mindset going on over at microsoft.

Microsoft just wants to thank people that loves Xbox One,aren't you happy?
Remember when they gave you 20 MSPoints on your birthday? This is a great improvement!

Well done Microsoft.

The budgetary Views “cap” for the entire Campaign is 1,250,000 Views among all U.S.
So the total budget is what, $3750? The campaign is probably already over. Bad and crummy all around lol
Whoever sells out for that little cash is an idiot...

why oh why couldn't it have been a console world of Sega, Nintendo, Sony? or just Nintendo and Sony?

fuck i can't stand Microsoft.

I swear, every day Microsoft does something to convince me that Sony or Nintendo would be a far better dominant force in the industry. If one company has to "win," let it be Nintendo or Sony.

I have an Xbox One, and I do enjoy it, but dang if I don't hate what Microsoft is doing in this industry on a wider scale.

Just because this is starting to make people assume I work for Microsoft...

My Facebook header is from Halo 3:ODST. My Desktop Background is from Forza. My Phone background is Destiny. My Laptop Background is The Last of Us. My room is filled with Sonic The Hedgehog and Destiny stuff.

I constantly use products and franchises I'm excited for to describe and personalize my stuff. I changed my Twitter background to the Xbox One in order to work in with the launch happening that week, and haven't been bothered to change it. :p All detective GAF proved was I'm a fan of the Xbox brand... Which isn't a secret or anything. :p

And this makes it okay!

Also graffiti advertising is completely legal and very common in cities like New York.

Do you have MS stocks or something? Otherwise you should rethink the word "faith". The you have worded it makes you sound like you want to blindly believe in MS no matter what...

What's wrong with faith? Their legal team is very good. I know this. If I had to bet, I'd bet on their legal team.

I still think the policy is gross.

I can't understand people saying it's okay it's just advertisement. It's not.

Advertisement is controlled, restricted to advertising spaces. Billboards, tv breaks, etc...

Youtube can be a place to advertise of course. But paying to get good word but forbidding the youtubers to mention it, is deceptive at best, illegal at worst.

I don't see the problem with this. All Microsoft is doing is paying and supporting the content creators supporting them. If other content creators who aren't fond of the Xbox Brand, decide to jump aboard and sell out on their personal beliefs for money, that's their fault and Microsoft's gain.

Just like any business contract, which this is, by the way, you aren't legally allowed to discuss the terms, conditions, or what you receive from it, so whatever.

The "you can't be negative about the Xbox One and it must be relevant" part also makes sense, why would the support you trashing their product? Besides, it's necessary. You already saw some posts on GAF discuss loopholes and ways to get money from Microsoft without doing anything. "Put it at the end of a totally unrelated video! Make a video discussing this bullshit and make money since it's about the Xbox One! Tall badly about the Xbox One and tag the video so you get paid!"

Can't blame Microsoft.

As a content creator and YouTuber myself, my channel is already practically a Xbox only channel (thanks Sony for making it so hard and BS to capture PS3 footage! And thanks even more for not allowing PS4 footage at all!), so I'm just getting paid for doing what I already do, I don't see the negative. Microsoft is just supporting those supporting them.

I know you're being sarcastic, and the hidden tag is hilarious, but seriously I sort of agree.

XB1M13.

Will you submit to a full body strip search so we can see if MS has tagged you anywhere?

There's no other way to be sure. Not any more.

Ehhh everyone in this thread is a lawyer now.

Its super super slimey, but again, I have faith in MS legal.

You have faith in MS that what? That this is legal? Even if this isn't illegal, this is shady as hell. The consumer misrepresentation is...

I'm sure you have faith in MS intentions, though, anyway.

All found to be either illegal, or drawing (understandable) rage.

Also, what does that have to do with this? I didn't know that because someone else did something illegal, someone else could do it too.

You don't have to validate or prove yourself to other posters dood.

They need to be weathering the storm. They're quickly burning out all the goodwill they amassed from the previous two generations. Accidents like this don't help - although I acknowledge you can't run a business waiting for your goodwill to wax. Having said that there's myriad other options to improve goodwill.

And before anyone says, they don't need goodwill, it has no impact, they clearly don't agree if they're prepared to spend serious ad dollars on Youtubers and 'viral' or 'organic' messaging.

The Xbox One all-in-one entertainment system for the 21st century is an amazing system with great exclusive games that can't be found anywhere such as Titanfall and LocoCycle.
The FTC are just jealous of the success of the brand. Nobody has a FTC wallpaper but plenty of people have a Xbox one!

Disclaimer: I also own a PS3. So nyah.

Edit: I hope Microsoft have found a loophole so that the FTC can't disallow this or fine them. That would suck for Microsoft!

I bet because the original campaign, at 1/3 of the current budget, went undetected, that this new one would go undetected, too.

Under the guise of "It's only illegal if we get caught."

What, you think maybe there's a loophole if disclosure is given via an Ars Technica article?

I actually can't imagine Microsoft are being this stupid. I mean maybe they are doing something similiar, but they sure wouldn't use random Youtubers where you could be sure that stuff would get leaked.
Seems like Machinima fucked up big time and end up hurting Microsoft in the process.

This is where I full-stop no longer give any YouTube-dedicated revenue-dependent game critics any clout whatsoever. Or hits, for that matter.

Except for possibly Boogie2988.

Thank you for destroying a good thing, Microsoft.

Same here. It's the last time I take Youtubers at their word. What a sad state of affairs.

Totally disgusting. I look forward to the "Sony too!" comments, though.
