Xbox One blocks used games. Offline Pass confirmed

You guys honestly think the PS4 won't do this either? They don't make $ off used games, them or the publishers, only the brick and mortar stores.

Thread title is inaccurate.

It does not block used games. Every used game must pay a fee to be installed. Once installed, that game can be sold again, and you will still be able to play that game.

So yes, it is a grim as fuck practice that I do not support. However, it is not the same thing at all, and this is why Gamestop etc are ok with it.

Wait. Doesn't this just mean you can install it and play it without the disk. If you buy it used, you'd just have to play with the disk in unless you pay a fee.

That will probably deactivate the original install because then someone could buy a game, install it and quickly sell it, amassing a huge collection.

Why is this the end of the world again?

It sounds like installation is mandatory.

Basically, used games will require you buy to an activation key if you want to play them. The natural evolution of online passes.

This might drive down pre owned prices, but will also drive down trade in prices. I also expect Gamestop to be selling these activation keys.

I guess I won't be buying an Xbox One then. The first console I'll miss?

I have never used this word to describe myself before, but I am fucking incredulous.

I always considered myself 'hardcore'. I bought every system and loved them all equally...I hadn't even considered a world in which I would skip a system. Flabbergasted.

Well it's not like Xbox One is going to easily become the dominant selling next-gen living-room-entertainment-platform regardless of gaming-forum digital-rights protesters!

that licensing sounds pretty much what I expected... install on one live account at a time so no disc required YEH! but you can sell them as used and they will need to be activated for fee by new user so pubs get a cut of the used game market. similar to how online passes needed to be purchased for most used games the last couple years,

so GS is happy only question it sounds like each disc will be coded so they know if same disc is installed on two machines... which I assume means a full fee will need to be paid as it is two full usable installs.

if it is deactivated on one live account and activated on another it is probably a $10 fee for example much like online pass but now it will even be for SP games and not just MP content

MY guess is Sony will do the same god damned thing... get used to It folks

I haven't purchased a used game in a long time, but the more I read the closer I am coming to this same conclusion.

Me neither. The issue is if you sell games, like I do, as then people will have to pay for the game itself and then to actually play the game as it's used.

Bargain bin buys gone. Second hand shops and those who rely on second hand sales dealt a huge blow.

Well, no chance I will buy this system now.

Have a Wii U and will buy a PS4 if there's none of this type of bullshit on it.

Get ready for SONY to say the same thing. Why else would EA get rid of all online passes?

Bin-fucking-go.

If MS is on-board with this, sure, it will make PS4 seem better in a strict comparison. But Sony also runs the high risk of shunning away developers and might want to capitalize on MS's scheme.

This makes easy to decide which one to purchase.

But I think this doesn't mean everything will be good on PS4 too. I'm sure all big developers want to fuck customers. Now that they have official help from one platform holder, they will force others to go along. Sony would allow publishers to decide this and they will do same thing as Xbox One.

This seals it. I'm jumping out of the Xbox onto the PS4.

And the conference was specially awful if you're not a US resident.

So, you need to be connected to the internet at some point to play the games so they can validate their DRM, but in order to actually use the online features of the games you bought or paid a fee for you still need to pay for xbl gold?

What a scam.

I think that they're trying to lean more away from the disc and go digital. Remember that people thought it was going to be all digital anyway, but my guess is that they want to dip their toes before diving in. To sum it all up, think of it like them following in the footsteps of the computer in leaning more away from discs. (Like Steam)

Let's clear this up again: there is NO WAY these companies are going to allow you to install the game and then sell it instantly for someone to do the same thing while still allowing the first person to play.

The very next time your system connects online and detects that someone else has paid an activation fee for that same disc, your ability to play that game will be taken away.

I am amused and dumbfounded by this. Surely this can't possibly end well but I'll withhold judgement until the console is out.

fuck me, it all makes sense now. I knew EAs thing was too good to be true. MS and EA and go take a running jump together.

Sony and Nintendo is where my $$$ is going.

a nominal (~$10) used games fee would keep everyone happy. Only ones to lose out would be some place like Gamestop, that'll just have to discount an additional amount to account for the fee, lest it lose sales.
Do you think Gamestop would just eat the cost? If they have to lower their used game prices, they going pay even less for your used games. At some point, it makes it less appealing to trade in your old games.

EA got rid of online passes for all future games, so it's still possible that something like this will exist for the PS4. I don't think it's gonna work how everyone thinks. I believe someone said it earlier. You can install the disc and play without it. You can share the game with a friend and they will have to install the game, but they can play it if they keep the disc in the console or they can pay a fee to play it without the disc. It makes a lot of sense. Microsoft has been trying to move towards complete digital distribution and this method turns the disc into a delivery medium. I can download the game off of Xbox Live or use someone else's disc to install it with a fee.

I understand this. Hence why I would not buy One and get the other (4).

Yup. I don't understand how people think they are going to be able to sell the game and still play it on their system.

+1

This sounds much more logical. No used installs, BUT "Used Game Disc Play" is fine.

eh. it's something that devs and publisher will try to pull on ps4 too.

There is a chance that it might happen:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/sonys-yoshida-playstation-4-wont-block-used-games/

Speaking at a roundtable session with the press attended by Ars Technica, Shuhei Yoshida stated that "when you purchase the disc-based games for PS4, that should work on any hardware." When asked whether games would require online registration, Yoshida noted that that decision was up to the publisher. When asked if Sony, as a publisher, would require games to be registered online, Yoshida said, "we are not talking about that plan."

One positive I can see. I lend my friend my disc of the game. I don't lose access to the game, and friend gets to install and keep the game at an assumedly discounted price.

Also the ability to re-download the game regardless of whether you still have the disc.

Apart from that, it's pretty awful, and definitely a strike in the 'reasons not to buy an Xbox One' list for me.
