What of they lower the price of used games but then tack on the five dollar "ms used fee" when you check out at GameStop? Wouldn't we really be paying the same price in the end???
Lets just wait until E3 before jumping the gun here. Sony could do the exact same thing.
Could this fee then allow you to 'purchase' the game for a cheaper price? Could be spun as a positive IMO
for example, I buy CoD Ghosts, I install the game.
I then give the game to my friend and he's charged the installation fee, we now both have the game. (?)

Do you think Gamestop would just eat the cost? If they have to lower their used game prices, they going pay even less for your used games. At some point, it makes it less appealing to trade in your old games.
Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.
+1
This sounds much more logical. No used installs, BUT "Used Game Disc Play" is fine.
One positive I can see. I lend my friend my disc of the game. I don't lose access to the game, and friend gets to install and keep the game at an assumedly discounted price.
Also the ability to re-download the game regardless of whether you still have the disc.
Apart from that, it's pretty awful, and definitely a strike in the 'reasons not to buy an Xbox One' list for me.
This proves absolutely nothing. Xbox One doesn't technically block used games either. It could very easily be the same policy for the PS4, and this interview did nothing to convince me otherwise.
when you purchase the disc-based games for PS4, that should work on any hardware.
When asked if Sony, as a publisher, would require games to be registered online, Yoshida said, "we are not talking about that plan."
What scares me is that EA may have dropped on-line passes because both XBOX1 and PS4 will be based on this system. And it may be another reason why they don't have games in development for the Wii U.
This comes as no surprise. All the signs point to this. PS4 will be the same way.
WiiU is looking pretty good, now.
Also explains the animosity towards Nintendo from western devs for not jumping onto the no used games train
Bad title. It's simply a universal online pass. You can buy and sell used games.
Let's clear this up again: there is NO WAY these companies are going to allow you to install the game and then sell it instantly for someone to do the same thing while still allowing the first person to play.
The very next time your system connects online and detects that someone else has paid an activation fee for that same disc, your ability to play that game will be taken away.

Yeah, those quotes from Yoshida never actually say that PS4 will play used games without payment of some sort.
I'm still planning on getting a PS4 and this MS reveal today didn't at all hype my up for the XboxOne.
There is a chance that it might happen:

Speaking at a roundtable session with the press attended by Ars Technica, Shuhei Yoshida stated that "when you purchase the disc-based games for PS4, that should work on any hardware." When asked whether games would require online registration, Yoshida noted that that decision was up to the publisher. If I have to pay even 5 cents to play a disc I own in another machine, this hobby is over.
It shouldn't be a problem if I bring a copy of Street Fighter 5 to my brother's apt to play. It shouldn't cost me additional money to play a copy of Call of Duty 18 that I buy from the BST thread here.

Well if installation is required for all games, the fee is mandatory if the game has been installed on a console previously. From the OP
I take this to mean that the game will be installed in the second consoles hard-drive but you'll need to keep the disc in the drive unless you pay the fee.

Thread title is inaccurate.
It does not block used games. Every used game must pay a fee to be installed. Once installed, that game can be sold again, and you will still be able to play that game.
So yes, it is a grim as fuck practice that I do not support. However, it is not the same thing at all, and this is why Gamestop etc are ok with it.
only thing that kept coming to me was, who are the fucking idiots scream and clapping for this BS?
