Xbox One blocks used games. Offline Pass confirmed

What of they lower the price of used games but then tack on the five dollar "ms used fee" when you check out at GameStop? Wouldn't we really be paying the same price in the end???

Lets just wait until E3 before jumping the gun here. Sony could do the exact same thing.
Could this fee then allow you to 'purchase' the game for a cheaper price? Could be spun as a positive IMO

for example, I buy CoD Ghosts, I install the game.

I then give the game to my friend and he's charged the installation fee, we now both have the game. (?)

That seems like how this works, yeah.

It's...weird as hell. Technically, if you're a person that never brings a game over to a friends house, there is no reason to NOT sell every single game back as it will be stored with you.

No. The fee is not going to be cheap, it's going to be a full game licence fee, which may go down over the life of a game in line with price drops.

I loved the voice command stuff and was genuinely excited. Then it just went downhill from there.

And now this. I don't care for used games but their implementation means I can't lend games to friends or barrow games from them without paying a fee to MS/publisher. That's asinine. And then there is the no backward compatibility. Ok... doesn't bother me that much, but at least offer some kind of solution. Sony at least made the effort to provide BC via Gaikai.

Oh well...

One thing is clear... it's not core gamers they want. They want the casuals who are craving more integration in their entertainment center and not necessarily a gaming centric device.

Yep, not buying. Xbox One? More like Xbox None. And you just know this fee will be full price in order to prevent people from exploiting the system.

Unless activation fees lower as time passes, but yeah, no.

Do you think Gamestop would just eat the cost? If they have to lower their used game prices, they going pay even less for your used games. At some point, it makes it less appealing to trade in your old games.

I don't even know how much of a presence the xbox one will even have at gamestop. The entire idea of the system goes against what gamestop does.

This comes as no surprise. All the signs have pointed to this for a long time now.

PS4 will probably be the same way.

WiiU is looking pretty good, now.

Also explains the animosity towards Nintendo from western devs for not jumping onto the no used games train

My earlier post seemed to get lost in the barrage of posts but here it is again, am I wrong in thinking you'll be able to play used games on another console as long as you keep the disc in the drive?:

From the OP

Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.

I take this to mean that the game will be installed in the second consoles hard-drive but you'll need to keep the disc in the drive unless you pay the fee.

Wait so let's say the fee is $30...a game is 60$.

If I buy the game, install it, give it to my friend, who pays the and installs it and pays me $15, then that's $45 for both of us.

Soo...the fee has to be higher (than 30?? too much!), or not exist at all...

So can they implement this without requiring to be online to install a game? Logically speaking I do not think so.

What scares me is that EA may have dropped on-line passes because both XBOX1 and PS4 will be based on this system. And it may be another reason why they don't have games in development for the Wii U.

One positive I can see. I lend my friend my disc of the game. I don't lose access to the game, and friend gets to install and keep the game at an assumedly discounted price.

Also the ability to re-download the game regardless of whether you still have the disc.

Apart from that, it's pretty awful, and definitely a strike in the 'reasons not to buy an Xbox One' list for me.

I doubt it will work that way. I would think that if someone else activates a disc you'd already activated, that it will no longer work on your account because you sold the game and don't get to play it anymore.

So it's the same as an online pass. But for the whole game?

Also, it is a good time to buy a 360 since X1 doesn't have BC?

This proves absolutely nothing. Xbox One doesn't technically block used games either. It could very easily be the same policy for the PS4, and this interview did nothing to convince me otherwise.

Yeah, those quotes from Yoshida never actually say that PS4 will play used games without payment of some sort.

when you purchase the disc-based games for PS4, that should work on any hardware.
When asked if Sony, as a publisher, would require games to be registered online, Yoshida said, "we are not talking about that plan."

I'm still planning on getting a PS4 and this MS reveal today didn't at all hype my up for the XboxOne.

If I have to pay even 5 cents to play a disc I own in another machine, this hobby is over.

It shouldn't be a problem if I bring a copy of Street Fighter 5 to my brother's apt to play. It shouldn't cost me additional money to play a copy of Call of Duty 18 that I buy from the BST thread here.

its like steam and PC games
if you bought the game ON DVD, you need to activate the game by key
and then the DVD become useless

No it doesn't. All signs point to people hoping Sony does it the same way.

Let's clear this up again: there is NO WAY these companies are going to allow you to install the game and then sell it instantly for someone to do the same thing while still allowing the first person to play.

The very next time your system connects online and detects that someone else has paid an activation fee for that same disc, your ability to play that game will be taken away.

Yup. They are not that dumb. That would really cause devs to lose money.

So what's the actual word on this? Used games are out completely Or is it just a $5 fee like with EA's online passes? If its a $5 fee no fucks given.

Yeah.

The second account install fee is going to be like $54.99 or something ridiculous you guys. Do you really think it will be like $5 or $20 bucks. They would lose a shit ton of sales. This is not going to be consumer friendly in any way. Gamestop will sell cd keys without the disk for $54.99 lol. This is even assuming next-gen games stay at $60 new...

jesus GAF... please stop over reacting can someone please change the thread title form the FIRE bullshit being spouted here

Quoting myself from last page

There is a chance that it might happen:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/sonys-yoshida-playstation-4-wont-block-used-games/

Speaking at a roundtable session with the press attended by Ars Technica, Shuhei Yoshida stated that "when you purchase the disc-based games for PS4, that should work on any hardware." When asked whether games would require online registration, Yoshida noted that that decision was up to the publisher. When asked if Sony, as a publisher, would require games to be registered online, Yoshida said, "we are not talking about that plan."

What is interesting is that they said it will be up to the developer. So EA can do it in the PS4 (and that would be ANOTHER reason as why no games are in development for WiiU)

This hobby is over? Jesus fucking christ you people are dramatic about the stupidist shit. Log in to your brothers console and you can play your game.

That "fee" will probably be full price so they'll let you continue to play the original game and count the pre-owned as a sale.

Well if installation is required for all games, the fee is mandatory if the game has been installed on a console previously.

I hope Sony won't implement this, too. Since they seem to be taking a pro-developer (and not necessarily a pro-publisher) approach, I'm cautiously optimistic about it.

Despite not being a Microsoft supporter, I honestly didn't believe they'd go ahead with this. I guess that's one of the reasons EA's playing nice with them.

I really don't think the PS4 will have it implemented.

The big sign that it won't be is that EA wasn't at the PS4 unveiling. Not a word from them even though the show was in their home country.

I think EA got their way by giving microsoft some exclusive content. All of their games will be on the PS4 (it would be suicide not to).

Thread title is inaccurate.

It does not block used games. Every used game must pay a fee to be installed. Once installed, that game can be sold again, and you will still be able to play that game.

So yes, it is a grim as fuck practice that I do not support. However, it is not the same thing at all, and this is why Gamestop etc are ok with it.

You are basically paying for the used game and a temporary "lease"(assuming you intend to sell it again) to access it on your console.

This is going to KILL rentals, unless they somehow drop their rates by whatever the fee is(ie: this will never happen).

This is fantastic. Being able to tie a game to an account and play without the disc is all I want in a modern console. Trading in games is plebby, not sonething I need to do as an adult. This offers the benefits of retail price cuts with benefits of digital distribution.

I'll wait and see before raging.

I am not impressed by the XO but this would effectively kill it for me.

I dont buy used games but I do rent a ton of games from Gamefly. Shit is expensive.

If the Ps4 does this shit..I'm buying a WiiU earlier than expected.

I'm a whore and If the games are there I will eventually get both but man...what a kidney shot.

It's going to be pretty lame in the future when you want play an out of print game. Guess everything will be available for download on the store but the store won't be there forever.

This next gen seems really bad.

You can though, as long as you are signed in assumedly.

And you just probably won't buy a copy of Call of Duty 18 anymore :(
