Xbox One Install Times are laughably horrible.

Not sure about XBONE, but PS4 installs take longer than they appear. The reason PS4 installs "seem" to not take any time is because a PS4 disc game is identical to a PS4 download.. that is most games install the playable part first (usually only a couple GB) then while you are playing that install the rest of the game in the background. Just like downloaded games, the install indicator when you first put the disc in is just the playable part, but you can hit More Info on the game and see the progress of how much of it is actually installed.

Love my X1 but yeah download/install times are awful compared to ps4. It's not just a slight difference it's massive. I've gone all digital this generation and buying digital on the x1 is substantially slower.

I don't own an Xbox One, but if true this is a bizarre and inexplicable reversal from last gen. I used to seethe at the absurd double whammy of long download and install times on the PS3, whereas the 360 didn't even have a (visible) install process.

Sony really learned its lessons, and Microsoft forgot theirs.

Really?
I've had the exact opposite.
I'm also all digital this gen and as far as download speeds go, my PS4 reminds me of my PS3.

I don't know if my router just doesn't like Sony products or what, but my Xbox One runs circles around it downloading 2+ GB patches and what not.

The installation times on Xbox One are slower, but like I've said previously, it hasn't been an issue since preloading was allowed.

I started Sunset Overdrive, Destiny, and Halo MCC at midnight on launch. No waiting. No drive to Best Buy or Gamestop at midnight.

Digital preloading is the way to go.

I don't think they are that bad. I popped in Halo MMC and it was completely done installing in an hour but it was ready for me to play in less than 10 minutes.

I was surprised because I heard that it took 4 hours to fully install.

Theres no way Destiny took you 20 minutes to install from disc on PS4, you must have digital correct?

Nope, disc. I seem to remember it taking around 20 minutes. It was 2 months ago though, sooooooo :P

edit: AC Unity did take me 20 minutes though on X1 to install from disc. I actually timed that one after my MCC experience

MCC took 3 hours for me to fully install to where I could start halo CE coop with a buddy. It's unbelievably bad how slow it is compared to the ps4.

And before you say it's my internet, I have a 50 meg download and the patch was downloaded in no time.

I'll never understand why people have opposite speeds on the same systems for downloads. I have really good internet and both systems are wired and have their NAT as open. But yeah for some reason PS4 games download instantly while the X1 version is much slower.

But for me, the install times are night and day different and I don't think that relies on their servers does it?

Ps4 is still infinitely quicker for me. Don't know why. I also pre load for midnight release. Was playing GTA V on ps4 without having to wait last night. So awesome :)

Im guessing the main reason behind this is that microsoft got a "cheaper" blu ray player to install game. Sony own the bluray technology, they wont give em the best. When it take less than a minute to install a game on ps4 and 30 on x1, its a major difference.

I believe XBox has AC while PS4 has N @ 2.4ghz only. Use wired and it will be even.

Someone livestreamed their MCC install and it took 5 hours lol

That's really weird. I have a similar connection and it only took an hour for me to download all the extra content have have it fully installed. I was also streaming an episode of The Wire while I was doing it.

I wonder what the difference was? Did you install from disc or digital?

That's not how it works. A consortium of companies owns the IP related to Blu-Ray. A manufacturer licenses said IP and manufactures a Blu-Ray disc drive. Microsoft purchases said Blu-Ray disc drive with the technology embedded. There is no "Sony won't give them the best" technology because they don't have the ability to withhold it.

Yeah, Xbox One install times are ridiculous. I timed a couple and both were over a half hour before they were far enough along to play. My PS4, which I have several more games for, has never gone over two minutes before letting me play. It's magical.

And yet the XB1 has suspend, another magical feature (that I've admittedly never used), but the PS4 doesn't. Weird.

Does this happen with digital games only, or both digital and physical? A big reason why I don't ever want to go digital is because of downloading and installation times.
The Xbox One doesn't have installs for digital games, just like the 360. Once the download is complete, that's it - you can launch the game straight away. Obviously, games can be pretty massive now so if you're worried about download times, that might be enough to put you off depending on your connection speed and whether you have a cap.

The problem with digital really is game prices. Some third party games are £55, when you can buy them on disc for £35-£40.

Xbox One install times are largely slow because it checks for a patch first and if one is available, it'll download that. Even without that issue, the times could still be improved a little though.

Seriously, the Xbox One has inarguably the worst console OS we've ever seen. EVERYTHING is slow on this console, from installing games to just pulling up friends lists. Every single thing you do on this console takes 2-3 times longer than it should.

LOL. Worst console OS ever hey?

Can you name one that's worse? Seriously. Every other OS could be navigated easily with a controller without spending an hour setting up pins (still clunky), no other console has had such burdensome install times, games crash fairly often to the dashboard, settings aren't even laid out logically. It's slow in everything it does. It's a terrible dashboard and OS.

no way did the Destiny disc take you 20 minutes... It didn't even take me 20 minutes to download the playable part from PSN :D

edit - there was a required day 1 patch for destiny.. so maybe that was what took 20+ minutes.

The only real time I've spent with the system was Halo 4 this weekend, I was not able to load the acheivements app once. Every single time one unlocked i tried bringing it up with the snap thing and every time an error.

This thing is just failure after failure.

I believe that the PS4 process data faster due to having additional hardware for downloading stuff. That ARM processor and additional 256MB RAM comes in handy after all.

i'm sorry but i fail to believe this is a hardware issue.

its shoddy OS software design. wolfenstein was a nightmare to install.

i had 3 mates round that day that had never seen an x1, utterly embarrassing performance, and we all decided that the OS/"workflows"/UI were complete dogshit. the consensus was that the console 'didn't look worth it'.

the download manager is almost nonexistant, and heaven forbid you try and play the game whilst installing and then get forced into a mp patch.

When Phil Spencer addressees it and says it is a top concern... it isn't being ignored.

Except when the issue has been present since launch. Same with black crush. Those two things has to be the first ones to be fixed on the next update.
LOL. Worst console OS ever hey?

There's like 6 OS so far on consoles. This is definitely the one with the worst complaints regarding a range of activities. Next is the PS3 but that can be attributed to Sony's lack of foresight. In XB1's case, MS already has a vast experience on these kinds of things being an OS creator.

Edit: To clarify, I don't count PS2 and earlier on OS.

It's the best console OS ever made. That's inarguable.

You can easily drag your pins into any order you like with SmartGlass if you want to reorder them without using "move to front" BTW.

no it isn't.

there little to no association between where a feature is and how it is displayed on the screen. UI's and how you interact with them should be inherent in the design. you shouldn't need instruction.

i have a friend who works on the UI in some capacity. i give her shit everytime i see her. she honestly didn't know that there wasn't a complete demo list.

Ya, like I said, my memory is either really rubbish (not ruling this out), or something else was effecting it.

Either way, I'll stop while I'm behind :P.

Well I think all of them are worse.

It doesn't take me an hour to set up pins at all.

Snap for friends and messages is great. Instant on and resume are really useful as well. The updates have been fantastic so far.

Long install times doesn't make it the "worst console os of all time" I'm afraid. I think you may be in the minority here.

based on what?

it was one of the major complaints leveled against the ps3's OS.

i'd put it on par in terms of frustration levels, which is embarrassing considering they've been trying to make this the center piece of your living room

It's ridiculous. Last week I popped in Forza 5 to test out my new TV. It said update required. Started in the evening and saw it go to 2%. Went to sleep, woke up, turned on the TV and it was at 96%!! It's just inexcusable one year after launch to have these install times. To me, it doesn't matter if you can play at a smaller percentage increment, you still have to leave the console on to complete the download, not to mention the entire dashboard is a mess. Not sure how it went from the Xbox 360 OS to this.

MCC was a little over an hour.

Really annoying.

45 GB disk
6x Blu-ray Drive has a Max transfer rate of 27MB/s (Note you will not get this transfer rate sustained). So let's round it down to 22MB/s
~35 Minutes to transfer to the Hard Drive

Then you have the 15GB additional content
Let's say you have a 50Mbps connection or 6.25MB/s
~40 Minutes

Not annoying but expected.

Haha, wait and see. Even as a day one adopter, I've never been so disappointed with a console. I'm hardly in the minority when it comes to being disappointed by the XB1 OS. I think a lot of that bears out in the sales disparity between it and the PS4 as well. People don't want to deal with the BS setup MS has going here.

It makes little sense to me to have discs that installs the game onto your system but you still need the disc to play the game.
Do what PC's do and limit how many times you can install a game.
Let me play without a game disc if I have to install it anyway.

That was the original DRM vision.

This is doing my head in too! I recently purchased a 3TB external to handle all the digital games I have (sharing lib with a friend) and more than a week ago I set about 5 going and I am still waiting on some of them to finish.

They randomly seem to stop with the error that something went wrong or when they do work it's so insanely slow that you ask yourself what could be going on.

I am on a 150MB UK Fiber and even a 45gb download should take under an hour from other sources.

I don't know if it's the beta dash, network issues, bugs, digital sharing etc etc but the the dash gives you so little info it's hard to know where to look.

MS need to greatly improve the download and install process, starting by more detailed feedback on progress and ETA.

MS focused on TV TV TV bullshit that they forgot to make fundamentally important things like fast installs a priority. On PS4 PlayGo is brilliant and shows that Sony put the focus on the right things with their machine.

the 360's OS went downhill too.

the fact that navigating locally was slowed by your network connection was a joke - even if said connection was fast. and now they are fucking up one of the 360s relative strengths - updates.

"need to sign in? that'll be 72 button pushes please sir, and allow us to kick you back to the main screen."

i'm sorry, but whoever works for MS on the OS side of things should be ashamed.

Yeah, I agree the console has a lot of great features. I think the thing is, there is a school of thought that the 360 OS was overall better than the X1 (which moved to unifying with their Windows 8 platform).

I think, if you are someone that 100% loves all the features (like snapping, and being able to do multiple things at once), then the OS is great. People that really use all the features. Those that don't really care for that, and like a more clean OS, and want things to be instant and more to the point....I can see why the X1 OS might seem a bit much.

I'm kind of in the middle. I don't care for all the features, but I also love some. I think MS should be applauded for how quick they have been to update their OS. All the updates have been great IMO.

You sound pretty hurt I guess. I'm enjoying the console. Its not perfect but its got some pretty damn fun games, especially in the last couple of months. I love forza horizon 2, halo, d4 and sunset overdrive and those are just recent.

Pretty happy with the monthly updates as well, its bringing a lot of cool features and making it run a lot smoother.

It installed in 20 minutes for me (Destiny from disc, on PS4)

But I don't know how it's taking hours for people in this topic to have MCC fully install though.

Only thing I can think of is the 15GB patch effecting the install time. For me, the game was playable within 5-6 minutes, and fully installed in about 30 (didn't run a timer or anything)

Though it is definitely slower than the PS4 at installing, by quite a margin on average from what I've experienced,

is 27MB/s not enough bandwidth to read the disc while playing? why are full installs mandatory if you don't have the hardware to perform the action in a reasonable time period?

MS sell the concept of digital as a way of taking your library when visiting friends etc. Good luck with that at the moment!

We have an XBONE at work and it's embarrassing when I want to show off a new game as I have to set it going the day before and half the people in the office have never seen past the progress bars.

It sucks, no excuses, having to disconnect from the internet is also stupid and still takes much more than it does on PS4. I put Dragon Age into my Ps4 yesterday and 5 minutes later i was playing. Same with pretty much every game. Average on Xbox One for me has been like 30-40 minutes, games like Ryse took closer to a full day, no kidding.

don't tell him he's in the minority just because you are happy with it.

its poor design for an (apparently) cutting edge piece of tech. its not hard to fathom that people maybe annoyed 1 year later.

Nonsense. The Xbox One has gaming features that the PS4 doesn't have. Suspend/resume is great. One of the best features of the new consoles. Does the PS4 have online friend notifications yet? Any way to organise your games? And where's the games with dedicated servers on the PS4? There's 5 so far on the Xbox One.

All of my digital games are on an external hard drive. I can plug that into any Xbox One, sign into Live and play them. The PS4 does that though, right? That's basic. Even the 360 did that.

It also doesn't make it the worst of all time...

You see the problem isn't that XB1's OS is really that bad. It isn't. It's quite decent for what it's trying to be. The problem is that when it is compared to the others, it falls quite short.

That's where the worst comes from.
