Xbox One now $349 from 16th January

So is Xbox's unlimited war chest back on the table now?

There's no doubt they can absorb more loss than Sony if they need to, but I think everyone should remember that these new hardware configs were chosen specifically to allow faster cost-cutting for fatter profit margins earlier as well as offering a more affordable opportunity to drop price faster and more inline with all of the console generations' price drop trajectories before the last one where prices are still ridiculously high today.

Sony doesn't need to do anything yet. They're in a comfortable and strong position right now.

It would be wise to wait and see if them bringing the price back down again will actually shift sales substantially in the US.

Sony can afford to do that, specially with how early their stream of solid games start releasing this year.

Yep. Bloodbourne should see a decent bump in sales for March. Surely any price-drop will be timed to coincide with UC4 in October.

Ah true, totally forgot about that. The PSr should still easily beat the X1, even with this price difference. It'll be much closer though. So if Sony drops to 350 does MS drop to 300? Would they go sub 300 if Sony did $299?

They are basically letting Sony hold all the cards

The decision for a price drop isn't just an arbitrary reaction. There has to be either room in the product margin itself or a strategic justification. I don't see either of these systems below $350 MSRP too soon, and I don't think Sony needs a drop, in terms of their operations. They're still ahead, and that means they have more to work with from software sales.

MS have got themselves in a position where Sony made a move and they followed very quickly, rather than having one made a move and the other a while after so while we can expect Sony to drop the price as their next move, they may well wait as far away as August/September for the holidays.

The Xbox One will be $299 this holiday with Halo though, that much should be obvious.

I think both companies are seeing their boxes as more of a means to get people sucked into their services/ecosystems -- thinking long term instead of short term (money loss).

So yeah, I could see there always being a $50 gap between the two consoles in America from this point on.

The biggest question now is do I get an xbox now at 349

Or wait until november for a special edition halo 5 branded console at 349 or possibly lower

What if they're temporarily dropping the price because they have some big announcements next week with Windows 10?
:O

Since they're going with "promotion", they'll announce "Since our customers love this price so much, it's going to stay permanent! Now here's Windows 10!"

Is MS aware a permanent pricecut in Europe is much more needed?

You can get it cheaper than the official price since it basically came out here in Germany
Currently these are the cheapest prices of a price comparison site:
340€ for the normal one
360€ SO Bundle
370€ AC Bundle
420€ Kinect Bundle
430€ CoD 1 TB Bundle or AC Bundle with Kinect

Playstation is such an integral part of Sony's future going forward. They must react to this price drop and also lower the price to $349 going forward if only in the US. They were probably going to announce it at e3 anyway.

Please Microsoft, give me a $399 bundle with all the Halo games in the fall. I mean, all of them. Reach, ODST, and Wars remasters.

The X1 was already close to $299 this year, I'd wager it'll go way lower this BF, especially if there's another price cut this year.

All in all at least NPD won't be boring

The lead that sony has in the U.S. will be gone by April. Not really putting myself out there when I say that.

Not really. Remember it wasn't just a $50 price difference that made them outsell PS4. It was free games on top of gift cards. I honestly think a $350 xb1 still won't sell more than PS4.

I don't know why you go into Xbone threads as it seems to cause you actual physical pain.

I don't know why, either. Everytime I give out my opinions about what Microsoft's doing, all these posters here do is attack me. Maybe I should just stay out of these threads for a long while.

So far, the only posters who were being reasonable with me for my opinion about this, are illmatic22 & Bgamer90.

What is the point in all this? It's just very poor messaging from MS.

Don't play games with people's money. You're either 399 or 349. Stop trying to mess about and make your message clear. Just another misstep from the corporation and another reason that puts me off buying the platform.

Is this some kind of long con or should i legitimately feel bad for you? Not because people are mean to you... just feel bad for you.

Maybe I should just stay out of them.

Maybe I should just stay out of them.

Maybe I should just stay out of them.

We all know this isn't happening.

I don't understand why they didn't just permanently drop it or extend the 'promotion' lol

Maybe they got some really valuable data from the two week break :P

At that point, you don't even need an ignore list. You need a white list.

Yikes, I'd hate to be someone that bought a One in the last couple weeks. Microsoft needs to just make this the permanent price point from now.

does this also mean they'll be selling at a loss from here on out with the $50 price cut?

I'll be impressed if they've managed to get the costs down to the point where they could sell at $349 and make a profit this early in the generation.

I suspect they're going to try a loss-leading approach for a while, like Sony did for the first half of the PS3's life. It's absolutely a viable strategy, assuming the shareholders are happy with it.

It might've been a smarter move for Sony to just drop the price of PS4 to $349, rather than pack in TLOUR. People seem to forget they're both technically the same price.

I wish Microsoft would drop the price of the damn 360. Can't believe there's only $100 difference between them.
