Xbox One now $349 from 16th January

I wonder if Sony will react at all. I don't think they necessarily need to drop the price, since they're in the business to make money not to win a sales contest, but who knows?
They already have. Not extremely but the TLOU bundle isnt just out of the kindness of their soul.

I do feel vindicated for not believing they would go back up at all. This is within the typical 14 day return policy.

Well that lasted long. I'd love to see what kind of sales data they got since the price went back up to make this change again so quick.

Fuck me, want to add any more qualifiers to that sentence?

Yeah, curious what that means, too... isn't the Wii still the top selling console from that generation?

Interesting to see how it competes sales wise with the ps4 in the US. I still don't believe that they're making an initial profit off the system though due to these cuts. A year and a half ago I would have never expected it to go from $499 to $350 so quickly though.

A lot of parents bought Xbox One over PS4 for their kids over the holiday because of $50 they would be saving.

Good going MS. Looks like X1 is here to stay.

Your opinions aren't reasonable, perhaps that's why? You appear to have a motive, and that motive is downplay everything MS does (and you've managed to downplay a price cut and make it a bad thing!).

And yet, you've ignored my 2nd post in this thread as to why it's an issue, as well as some other posters who were talking about the exact same thing while resorting to bashing me further:

Wow, I can't say anything without getting ransacked.

Not annoyed, I'm just saying. If you're going to lower the price, then why not just freaking stick to it from the get-go? Instead of raising the price back to $400, then two weeks later, lower it again? It just doesn't make any sense.

And I've talked good things about the system & it's games a couple of times; Games like Quantum Break have interested me. The only time I talk bad about Microsoft, is when they either say or do stupid shit, or when they make bizarre decisions.

You're an embarrassment to ordinary Playstation fans as far as I'm concerned.

See? This is what I'm talking about.

Congradulations. You just proved my point.

I'm a parent.

If the kid wants a PS4, you don't wrap them up an Xbox and say "deal with it."

Same goes if it's the other way round.

It was more than just $50 that made the XB1 the best choice for alot of consumers during the holiday. Unless MS plans to keep offering free games, giftcards and credits, imo, i don't think just a $50 difference will have the same results as the holidays.

First of all, I dont know if this has been posted, so sorry if it has.

I know that Microsoft hasn't given a date as for when this price "promotion" will end, other than it is for a "limited time". I was at ToysRUs today, and noticed some signage for the price drop. If you look at the image I took below, it says the price is valid from 1/16/205 - 5/2/2015. Those dates are pretty specific, in that, May 2nd will be the last day of tracking for April NPD (the most recent promotion took place on the start of November NPD and ended at the end of December NPD). So I assume a new promotion could start on May 3rd.

So it looks like the price is going to be valid, at least at Toys R Us, for the next 3.5 months. That is a pretty long promotion.

1 TB standard SKU announcement in May maybe?

Hahaha

Are you serious? This is nothing but a soft price drop my MS (by soft, I mean careful marketing speak, so the value of the console is not lost in the eyes of the consumer).

If you want to get technical, they aren't lying. It will only be $349 for "a limited time."

Until it drops down to $299, of course!

It is 100% soft price cut cos only in one country. Just like we called soft launch iOS games, some coming out NZ first few weeks.

Bwahahaha...

A 7 months long " sale" with a 2 weeks break.

They must fear that Sony would follow suit if they "officially" dropped their price, I can't see any other reasonable explanation.
They can't possibly think that customers are stupid enough to rush just because it says "sale", right?

Wonder if Sony will see through their "dastardly" smart moves and adapt 😕

/jk.

Don't be stupid like that MS and announce it like it is, an official price drop.

Buying your kid a $350 gift instead of a $400 gift doesn't make someone an asshole. I would have been happy to get a $20 gift growing up.

If a $50 difference is a such a deal breaker said parent shouldn't even be buying their kids a video game console at all. They should be saving that money for food and bills.

Heh...

I don't blame them, they are looking out for their interest. I mean, just a year ago, the XBO launched at $499, and now it's almost half that price. They can say, "well, the Kinect is gone, that's why it's $399". True in a way, BUT even at $399 the console was not selling because it is an inferior system to the PS4 at that price tag (in the eyes of the consumer).

Now since it's not selling at $399 as well as the competition, they have to drop it again. So what do they do? They phase in the price drop. Drop it, raise it up, drop it, raise it up. And all of the sudden, "Because customer love the XBO so much, and we appreciate our customers, we decided to permanently lower the price to $349!"

It's sounds great to the average consumer, and it doesn't seem like the console loses its value by suddenly cutting the price by $50. I'm guessing Mr. Spencer has new people in the Xbox Marketing division. Clever stuff.

“Building off a record-setting holiday, we are excited to announce a new promotion in which fans in the U.S. can buy an Xbox One at a special price of $349, starting tomorrow, January 16, from their preferred retailer,”

You don't have kids do you?

Of course not, that somehow invalidates my opinion?

Just be thankful enough that you even got a gift. Much rather get a second option than nothing at all.

That is certainly true. But its $50 ffs. If this was 2006 and the choice was between a $400 360and a $600 PS3 (or hell, even a $250 Wii if you could find one back then) then yea, I'd perfectly understand why you'd get the cheaper one.
But its not.

Someone done that i know in uk, but their children are clever too, they went to refund Xbox one with receipt and with own pocket money to bought PS4. Problem solved.

And people say kids are dumb...

They would be an asshole if the gift was less like giving them $15 instead of the $20. If they are already spending over $300 then why not spend the extra money to make their kids happy.

Well my mom bought a Xbox over a GameCube because they were sold out all over the place during the 2001 launch and Xbox was $100 more as well. Wasn't particularly happy, but I got over it.

Just don't expect everything to go your way I suppose?

They cant say permament price drop without also doing a proce drop in the rest of the world.

So they drop the price in the one region where they have a chance and call it a "Promotion" So the other microsoft departments can tell their customers, that every region is responsible for their own promotions.
A pricedrop would be global. But it seems microsoft doesnt want to go there. Either they dont care for ROTW and want the extra money from these regions.
Or they test the waters in the next coming months if an xbox can achieve sales parity mont on month with the PS4 at that price. They then either jank up the price if they think they have enough "momentum" to carry them with 399 the rest of the year (because they dont want to bleed any more money) or they let the price at 349 and roll with it.

Maybe its even a last resort kind of thing. Could be that not many in the upper management are happy about bleeding so much money into a failing console (Xbox One maybe better in the first 14 months in the us then the 360, but the 360 had good sales in rotw, the One is dead outside us and uk) And the xbox guys in microsoft told the upper management that the price has to be 349 to be competetive. So if the xbox one doesnt make a dent over the WHOLE year, it could be trouble.

You don't have kids do you?
I do (2 boys). And kids who are old enough to play videogames generally know exactly what they want, wether it's because friends already have one, their parents have one, or they saw a game on tv that they want specifically associated with that one.

The $50+ 2 games was so effective because it tapped in the pool of "more than 1 console" adopters, and the "I don't have preference either way but I'm waiting for a good deal". That was on top of the Halo fans who held off until close to the MCC release.

It's not about parents not knowing which console to get for their kids and being so tight that $50 is a deal breaker at Xmas even if they would have normally went for the PS4.
If you are $50 short at Xmas, you don't buy a $350 toy.

They absolutely can (and do have) widely different prices depending on regions.

€399 (Europe $440 equiv)
£299 (UK $450 equiv)
$399 (US actual retail $349)
RMB3199 (China equiv $519)
¥39.980 (Japan equiv $392)
R2200 (Brazil equiv $1000)

I want to get it just to have it
But at the same time
I know it will just sit there and collect dust (like my last two Xbox one's did) because I'm a 'one game at a time' type of guy and I'm just playing Destiny way too much right now.

After e3 for sure, hold out hope for a slim! (or at least the size of the current ps4)

If that was the case they wouldn't have to go crazy and did those deals during Black Friday and afterwards.

I know the Xbox One has a lot of space taken up due to the (overly large) fan but even an XB1 slim is unlikely to be probably anywhere near the same size as a PS4

It is called being a savvy shopper. That 50$ can go to a towards a game or another controller. Do you understand? You obviously do not have kids from the way your post reads.

It was more than $50. You also got 2 bundled games and at some retailers like target you got a $50 gift card as well.

There were significant savings to be had if you bought a xbox one rather than a ps4.

"Mommy mommy, why isn't my Dragon Age running at full 1080P??!! Christmas is ruined."

Kids don't give a crap about the marginal differences between the systems and neither do parents. Both systems being equal, parents will probably pick the cheaper one.

okay, lmao, I listened to some podcast (it was either idle thumbs or gamers with jobs) that called this in the 15th, word for fucking word

Kids don't give a crap about resolution but they might if all their friends got a certain console already.

Dude, calm your horses. I'm talking about the price. I was referring to the parents not giving their kids what they asked for instead they give them cheaper alternative just to save a buck.

Microsoft is well versed and OK with losing money on things

see the Xbox, xbox 369 red ring redemption, surface sales write offs etc.

They know how to make it work

The only world raising the price on this makes sense is if it is for a kinect bundle for $400 for all systems sold. Everyone thinks of it as a 350 system now.

Also wii u cost too much in comparison and ps4 is fine at 400.
