Xbox One S + 4K TV Compatibility and Settings: The thread.

I have the Samsung hu8550 and I had to get an evolution kit add on to enable green checks across the board but extremely happy with the results on my Xbox one s

I recently got the new 65" Vizio P series to replace my aging Panasonic. It supports both Dolby Pro and HDR 10, the little 4K content I've seen on it is straight jaw dropping. I'll probably get a 2TB One S as soon as Forza Horizon 3 drops..hoping there will be a bundle.

Models supporting the evolution kit can have UHD color on all inputs

Correct, that's why I said k8000 and up. He has a 7000 no? Lesser models than the 8000 and up don't have the evolution kit, thus UHD color only on HDMI 1. I have a k6290 and its the same.

What exactly is an evolution kit? Sounds like a 32X for your TV? Is this a Samsung exclusive idea? I wouldn't mind upgrading my Vizio without buying a whole new TV but I doubt there is a simple kit I can get for it... Interesting.

Basically it's an external box with all the inputs. The tv itself doesn't have any inputs. You connect that external box to the tv.

HDR on an edge lit is so bad though...
Exactly. FALD and OLED is highly recommended for proper HDR display.

Instead of having the control board built inside the TV. Samsung puts them in an external case and connects that to the TV. This way a user can easily replace the board when it's faulty or upgrade it to support new things such as new codecs or inputs. But keep in mind that this won't suddenly make a panel capable of things it wasn't able to do before, an 8bit panel won't suddenly be capable of displaying 10bit colour for example.

I thought picking up a TV to go with my S would be simple, haha. Looks like I've got some thinking to do
and banks to rob

That Digital Foundry article doesn't even mention the 2016 Vizio sets?

I'm looking at the Vizio website now. The HDR in those sets is Dolby Vision, and apparently the X1S uses something different?

That sucks, those sets look good, although the 120-inch set goes for $130K. I could get a car or two with that.

Out of interest, why aren't Vizio sets (which seem to give the best bang for buck) more widely available in the UK? Unless I'm missing something, I can't see them in any big retailers, and yet I see lots of UK-based tech sites talk them up.

XB1 s uses the HDR10 standard instead of the Dolby Vision standard.

Devices that use Dolby Vision for HDR can be made compatible with HDR10 via firmware update. The other way around isn't possible, as Dolby Vision requires special hardware.

Vizio is currently rolling out firmware for their sets to make them HDR10 compatible.

Game mode + HDR works on my Samsung 2015 model JS8005(JS8500 in US) so it's strange if it doesn't work with the 2016 models.

Hm, that's good to know.

In case anyone is wondering the firmware is out now, P series now fully supports both HDR standards.

As someone who is considering getting a 65 inch KS8000 cab anyone confirm if HDR works while in game mode? Talking about the 2016 model here.

They retail to the US only and have no interest in changing that

See above...

Can anyone who has the Samsung K8000 series + an Xbox One S verify that UHD is supported through game mode?

LG OLED is AMAZINGG

I watched Deadpool for the first time last night on my LG OLED B6. I have to agree. Add on a decent sound system and the experience is hard to put into words. I plan to get some gaming in on it tonight to see if there is any input lag issues. I'm not that sensitive to it so I should be fine.

Yes it is. I bought the 65 inch a few days ago. All checks green, exclusively used in game mode. All 4 HDMI slots too.

Edit: Oops, really should of read the two pages first before posting.

Just initiated an exchange for my new 2016 Vizio M65 for a Samsung KS8000.

Just want to confirm if there's any issues with HDR content and game mode on this TV? Worried HDR is going to cause worse frame rates for gaming.

Hopefully not too off-topic, but anyone here have any experience/recommendations for monitors that support HDR with the lowest possible response times?

I've been gaming since the launch of the 360 on monitors at my desk, so I can't do big screen gaming, especially for shooters. I can't play as sharp as I can at other's friend's places on their TVs, so I when I get my XB1 S in October, I'm just going to stick to a monitor as always. Definitely going to want HDR support for Gears 4 and any future games and Scorpio.

So ks8000 and up has HDR in game mode??

Does Game Mode make the picture ugly? Does game mode cancel 4K upres or does the X1 do the upres?

SamsungHelpUK tweeted

"As long as the game is HDR compatible, the TV will generate this data and play HDR content fine.Enabling game mode won't impact the HDR viewing for you. Hope this helps!"

This suggests it should do HDR in game mode.

Yep. I got a response from Samsung UK today also. On the question that the 7000 series doesn't play HDR under game mode - they said that the Eurogamer article wasn't well informed and that "We've had a statement from a product specialists saying that it's not the case. Happy gaming"

Shouldn't a 4k ready TV work with xbox one s 4k settings? I got this http://m.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeEntertainment/LCDTV/Models/LC80UQ17U.aspx at home. The main reason I bought it was 4k ready and it was a very large TV.

I got my xbox one S last night and I made sure the firmware and everything was up to par for the tv but the Xbox kept saying the tv is not supporting the setting.

Any suggestion?
Your TV doesn't support 4K/60hz input and has a 1920*1080 panel. So the XB1, correctly, won't you let select 4K.

So basically, I can't play 4k content? Greaaaat.. Thanks for the help.

Edit: would it work for if the setting were at 4k/30hz? Or (30fps)

Yeah it would be really strange if game mode + hdr didn't work since it works in all 2015 hdr compatible models. I hope Eurogamer updates the article so that there will be less misinformation.

it should display it - but may be that only one HDMI port will work for that so make sure you're directly plugged into the right one.

Are you sure you are linking to the correct TV?

You said that you bought the TV as its 4K ready but it's not.....clearly says it's 'only' Full HD.

That TV is one Sharp made and sort of sneakily marketed. It's basically a 1080p set that has some 4k processing and ability to sort of split it's pixels in half to kind of get some extra resolution...

it's far more of a 1080p TV set than a 4k set.

Sadly, that TV has a native panel resolution of 1920 x 1080.
It has 4K @ 30hz input, but it won't make much difference for you.

If you can return that TV- do it ASAP.
It's not going give you the picture quality you need.

I will double check the hdmi. I had it directly going into the tv last night. It should at least look better tho playing 4k content?

Unfortunately I already have had it for a year now or else I would. The quality is good but I just wanted to push it to its limits.

JS9000 here, Xbox S outputs HDR in game mode just fine! Also people should lay off with the "edge lit LCD's are shit with HDR" they are actually not. Ones I've seen anyway. Daytime viewing, you wouldn't even see the difference with a FALD and edge lit.

Its an awesome TV. The WebOS is the best smart TV software I have ever used. Can't wait for the S to play some 4 Blurays

That's great to hear. WebOS was definitely a big reason I got it, looks real slick. Only worry I had was the contrast being an IPS but I scrutinized it at Best Buy and it looked great and pretty decent contrast wise to me even next to the other tvs (except they had it right next to the OLEDs so that's not really fair lol).

I have the Hisense H8c which has FALD, HDR and looks really amazing, especially for the under 400 I got it for. But HDR only works through USB at the moment and the viewing angles were really bad for the way I watch it sometimes. So when I saw the 8500 on sale for 800 bucks for the 55 inch the other day I decided to order it. I'll give the Hisense to my parents since they still have an old 32 inch 720p generic brand. lol

Does game mode make the colors washed out and does it allow the xbox S to upscale?

Why would game mode wash out the colors? It's possible that game mode might reset things like contrast, brightness, and sharpness to base values, giving the impression of washed out colors when compared to an oversaturated image, but realistically, they're probably closer to the true colors in that form (Unless you properly calibrated your TV prior).

HDR requires more processing power for the system itself. The TV itself doesn't care. Microsoft bumped the GPU speed by 100mhz on the One S to compensate for HDR and prevent any frame loss due to it.

I did an A to B comparison tonight with comparing HDR to SDR and then SDR but with full backlight and contrast which is what the TV does when detecting the HDR flag.

This is with an edge lit JS9000, and I'm pleased to say that there is a stark difference with how the TV displays HDR content, than just ramping up the contrast and brightness when viewing SDR, the blacks are definitely blacker, much higher perceived contrast ratio, when ramping up the backlight and contrast manually, it looks washed out.

Anyway my point is LCD HDR edge lit does look great, and definitely brings the best out of an LCD.

DolbyVision is like HDR10 except with even higher standards, supposedly. At launch the 2016 P series only supported DV but it has already been updated to also support HDR10.

I'm hoping the 2016 Vizio P series drops in price a bit soonish... Vizio has really low input lag.
Love my M50-C1 from 2015, but I'll be damned if I don't get some HDR goodness for Scorpio.

It's a format war. If I was placing bets, I'd say HDR10 is going to win out. DV may be a technically higher standard, but given that it's currently pretty limited in adoption and requires proprietary hardware to work, HDR10 is going to become the ubiquitous standard for this stuff.

Pretty much no 4K tv's have "low input lag" with HDR enabled. Vizio included. They're 60+ms with HDR enabled.
