Xenoblade X Localization Changes for Character Models

I'd argue the bust slider shouldn't have been there in the first place, given the paucity of other options in terms of body.

And I'd argue that removing options in these things is never a good thing and definitely the greater any arguable evils here.

I think it is pretty clear that the bust slider is being removed to prevent players from creating their own characters that look like 13 year olds and then dressing them in the uncensored adult version of that underboob bikini.

And with all the other things they're doing, I think it's /fascinating/ that they left that underboob bikini in there at all.

I'm starting to understand why I hated the new South Park season now. It's because they completely nailed the current society's mindset: being politically correct (PC) at any cost, even if it means ruining the original artist's vision. It starts with bikinis and boob sliders. Next thing you know, publishers will remove other essential features in order to avoid any social unrest. Fight censorship. #freeLin #iluvboobies
but Nintendo is the original artist

So just because the character creator isn't very in depth it's fine to simplify it even further and remove things for no reason?

I'm merely trying to point out that having a bust slider as part of a spartan character creation system shows that sexualizing the female characters was a priority to the game designers.

they changed her pants in the japanese version in the bottom pic. No longer does she have bare legs

No for this one, it seems to be different.
Those videos are for Joysound, the karaoke app. It looks like it's a different version for a bigger audience since you can't really restrict things here. So OG version might still be in the game.

Of course I'm saying for Japan only, I pretty much expect NOA to switch the cutscenes in the western version now.
Pretty sad to expect that when it wasn't the case some years ago.

Time to learn japanese .

I'm toying with the option, yeah. If Japan future gaming output wasn't so unclear, I would say it's a solid choice. We've had edited cg, edited outfit, edited character creator, meme translation (if memory serves), etc.
While a lot of these edits can be totally justified, the list grows a little too long imho. What's next ?

So what arbitrary number of sliders do we need to reach before we can unoffensively add a slider for breast size? 5? 7? 29?

That sounds like a reasonable discussion topic for a forum - maybe with further consideration we might decide the specific number isn't important. I just want more people to be aware of how women are sexualized in the vast majority of video games. This might not be a five-alarm case of objectification to you, but keep it in the back of your mind when you're defending the next game that encroaches into uncomfortable territory as far as the portrayal of the female figure is concerned.

I could really be avatar-quoting this entire thread.

I don't think you understand your own argument.

How does boob size prevent players from making someone who looks like Lin?

This game is apparently an 8-4 joint so I'd be interested to hear their reasoning

Uh... you speak against objectification, then proceed to avatar shame...

I think I've made it pretty clear, so I'd be interested in you explaining your statement more. If you don't allow many options for character creation, and one of the few options is a bust slider, you are prioritizing bust size as one of the most important physical characteristics of a woman.

I was :) when I read the first part

Then I read the next part :(

This may come as a shock to you, but some of us can be well aware of and care about the issues of objectification in media and actually think about it on this particular issue and still disagree with you on this subject.

But they do allow a decent amount of options. You're being misleading in claiming that there were only three options (height, weight, and breast size).

Wait what the hell?

As a woman this pisses me off. Having small boobs or big boobs doesn't mean your any lesser or greater and I should be able to adjust my bust size if I so feel the need to do so.

And as a woman i'm ok with this. Most games don't let any features change beyond general physique but boobs always got some pervy priority.

Not a big deal, not a game changer, i'm still going to buy.

I'd argue that the West in general is finally turning a corner on exploitation of female bodies for titillation, while Japan continues to say "Here, have a half-naked 13 year old".

An artist and creator has the choice to do what they want with their art. They felt this was more appropriate for this release and I stand by their decision even if I don't entirely agree with it.

But... actually, yes. It's a good thing there are less sexualized, half-naked 13 year olds.

Uh... you speak against objectification, then proceed to avatar shame...

It wasn't meant as shaming as much as illustrating that a lot of these other games (Dragon's Crown in the specific example of the person I was replying to) are games where we've had this same discussion. There is a trend, I just want to call attention to it. As I said earlier, if you want to play a game with sexualized women that's fine, but just be honest about it and don't start bringing up things like free speech, censorship, or sexism against the women with smaller breast sizes who will be negatively affected by this decision.

I fear for the upcoming Fire Emblem and what Nintendo can do to censor it.

You probably won't be able to marry your fake sister now, less sexual innuendos, more memes, and stuff hiding characters part ala 4kids or like NOA/8-4 (surprising) did with Tharja.

Of course they do, just as we, once that art is out in the world, have the choice to say "This is fucked up".

Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say bust-size sliders are "fucked up", but I agree with Amensiac saying that the fact that there are only three body-related sliders, and one is about breast size tells you something, and I'm pretty sure it's not telling you "Hey, we thought it'd be nice to let women represent their own breast size" but rather "How big you want dem titties, boys?".

If that's true, then I'm sorry, I haven't created a character yet (I have the CE pre-ordered at Best Buy) - but the larger point still remains as I responded to someone else, that being one of a few options still sends a message.

In this case, now you get half-naked 13 year olds with mandatory disproportionately large breasts. Thanks Treehouse.

These changes are appropriate, and will not affect the quality of the game at all. If you want to look at breasts, they are available on the internet.

If this were a more detailed character creation system it would be a non-issue. I think the context is what's important here. You can only adjust 3 things, one of them is breast size. I have to believe you can recognize that is sending a message about how the female body is perceived.
Yeah, obfuscation via more options would've been ideal, one extra option out of ten or more wouldn't look out of place compared to just 3. I still think it's silly and shows Nintendo might be getting a bit overly prudish on a whole. Lin makes plenty of sense, but weren't Fatal Frame's characters adults? Or at least old enough that those kinds of bikinis weren't particularly scandalous?

Well you heard it here first folks, there's only one boob size over here in the USA. God bless.

Honestly why even? Even if I disagree with a lot of changes NoA makes in games, I at least understand the reasoning, this is just taking shit out for the sake of it. It's not even like "oh well, sexualization," girls have different size boobs, it's just a fact of life. Nintendo gotta grow the fuck up.

45% would go all the way to MAX setting, 40% would leave it alone, and 5% would go all the way to the Minimum setting anyway.

Yeah. Where's my men's buttocks slider? You heard it here folks. All men have the same sized glutes. Grow up, Nintendo. Some of us are proud of the work we put into our squats.

Sexualization and free speech and censorship are not mutually exclusive though.

If artistically you want to create a character you consider sexy with a breast slider and the option is taken away thanks to a regional cut-and-slice, that's censorship in every sense of the word.

I would ask that you don't try to sequester the topic into something it's not (a vendetta against posters who want options for whatever reason that is, either for sexiness or to "create themselves"), and more of what it is, which is an attempt to take away reasonable content out of fear from the end user.

It's not as indepth as some games when it comes to customizing specific aspects of your face, but they still allow you to change a good number of options.

When you publish something, you have the right to add or remove whatever you want. If Nintendo chooses to remove the bust slider, that kind of self-censorship is completely reasonable. This has absolutely nothing to do with free speech.
