I'll admit, it did some things good but, well I said it better in another thread:

Final Fantasy VII is both the best and the worst thing to happen to modern RPGs. It set new standards in story-driven games, explored interesting concepts in its character growth system, and looked pretty too (for a while anyway). It's just too damn bad it's worshipped for its shitty characters and easily exploitable Materia system. The game's far too simple, Cloud's the dumbest thing to come from Square since Tom Sawyer, Sephiroth never did shit to earn his reputation as "ultimate badass of teh universe!", and Aeris isn't the gamer's Princess Di.

FFVII may have made pretty FMV the standard, but the rest of the game was shitty. Wake up, people.
