Yandere Simulator dev on Twitch lack of oversight on bans.

Because of the holes it opens up in their policy. I don't support either party but this just opened a whole new can of worms. I wanna see where this goes.

I'm curious too. That said the whole policy situation could just be ammended by them including a clause saying they reserve the right to block whatever, whenever. I assume that already exists actually.

Twitch absolutely should have given him this explanation months ago.

It's pretty clear cut, they don't want that kind of content on their platform. That's totally fine, but why the hell did it take them so long to say it?

Is it? Because I feel like there's games allowed on Twitch that hit these points.

They should just come out and say "Our site, our rules". What's stopping them? Anything else is just going to be criticized as inconsistent because there will always be exceptions and in the end this is a subjective judgement (as it should be).

I agree that if they're going to have a ban list at all, this is one that should probably be there, but to try to justify it with subjective pointers that get applied arbitrarily from people's perspectives instead of just saying games are analyzed on a per-case basis seems silly.

Call me a sick bastard, but Hitman in a high school sounds like an awesome game to me and I'm not offended by the content whatsoever. Well, the panty shot stuff is pretty weird and could be easily cut.
You're not a sick bastard and people are generally just squeemish. As an avid horror fan, I mean, can I hide separate body parts to scare fellow students or just a whole body?

And when is senpai going to realize all of my potential rivals are disappearing??

Well the problem comes in when/if the devs wants to adjust the game content to make it acceptable for Twitch. If you submit a game to the ESRB, for instance they'll give you justification for why your game got the rating it did. Not responding to him at all does absolutely nothing.

"glorifying perverse japanese culture"

Lol

It's their choice of moderation but if that's not obvious that they are biased on the subject

I can't believe anybody would think that phrase would actually appear in an official Twitch communication; that's so transparently something designed to work up the Gamergate crew.

Yandere Simulator is pretty gross from some parts, so I'm not surprised that it was banned at all.

However, that response from Twitch didn't seem... professional, I guess? Something about it doesn't make it feel like an official response from a big company, and more like a rant.

The developer left out the possibility that the game is banned from Twich not just because of one violent/sexual component but instead because all of these components are found in one game.
But Twitch is also acting very unprofessional by not responding.

They didn't owe him any explanation. It's good that they did though, because maybe it'll make him shut up about it as if it's everyone's problem his game can't be viewed through twitch.

Escuse me for falling for it.

at least i wasn't alone.

At least i'm ok with twitch actually not being this dumb

Guys, think rationally here, instead of looking at the similarities between the products banned/allowed why dont you look at the differences?

Sonicomi: Has you dress up a shapely woman and take pictures of her as her photographer in the modeling agency she works at.

Yandere: Allows you to take pictures of unassuming underaged students for the purpose of blackmailing them or bullying them into committing suicide.

GoW: Has you murder and dismember fantasy monsters as well as people in your quest to fuck up the gods because you are very angry (and probably a psychopath).

Yandere: Has you murder and dismember children to stop them from talking to your crush because you are most certainly a psychopath.

Bully: Has you assaulting kids (storywise, the vast majority of the time being consensual between two parties) so that you can raise your status within the school and eventually unify all the different groups like a warlord.

Yandere: Has you assaulting and torturing children till they either die or go into a mind broken mess of stockholm syndrome just because they dared talk to senpai.

I have exactly zero sympathy for people complaining about banned or "censored" games and they can by and large go fuck themselves.

Dude, why don't you go fuck yourself and stay out of the thread? Seriously, imagine how ridiculous it would be if I simply decided to tell people to fuck off not even based on the merit of their argument but stance alone. It's close minded and doesn't promote any discussion, not to mention it's rude.

What if a game is ''unfairly'' banned, like The Witcher 3? Maybe somebody at Twitch doesn't like all the sex scenes and bare breasts being shown. I bet many of the games you play could fall under the rules of banned content. A game could go both ways based on what person is making the decision. If nobody ever complains about games being banned, Twitch can decide on their own what is deemed acceptable and what is not. I happen to watch Twitch a good amount. This means I want to be able to express what I want to watch, even if Twitch doesn't care what I think. Streaming is a growing market and there are other sites out there that offer this service too.

It's twitch's platform. So they do get to decide on their own what is deemed acceptable and what is not.

Well it's a good thing that people can ask for an explanation right??? Like any other story where something happens, people want to know why.

So yes, it IS Twitch's platform. They can do what they want. The can ban any game they so desire. But they should explain what they're doing so people don't waste their time trying to figure out why and move on or fix it.

They definitely don't have to explain why. It's their platform. They own it. No one has a right to use it or to demand information from them. The same way steam doesn't have to sell your game if they don't want to. They don't even have to explain why.

It doesn't matter whether or not Twitch owns their own platform or whether or not people have the right to ask questions. Questions will be asked regardless. Streamers can decide to use other streaming services. Viewers directly fund Twitch. I've funded Twitch with numerous subscriptions. I can decide at any time to cancel such subscriptions and just donate directly to the streamer. Do you now understand why Twitch needs to have a good relationship between game developers, content creators, viewers and themselves?

I never disputed that people can or can't ask questions. And sure, streamers can use other services. That is their choice and it's twitches choice to not let them use their service for this particular game and several like it.

And as far as I can tell, twitch is not worse off for having banned games, including yandere simulator. Go ahead, protest with your wallet if you think that will make a difference. Stop "funding" twitch. Won't change a thing. Of course, your choice of words here is odd. You're saying that you give them money for a purpose as if you have some control over the way they use it. You don't.

Also, I doubt their advertisers want to be associated with trash anyway. Twitch is a business. Not a public service.

If Netflix cancels your favorite show, you're the one who loses out. I don't particularly care what Twitch's advertisers think. They have their interests to worry about and the viewers have theirs. If a game you like gets banned, it's in YOUR interest to have it unbanned if you want to see it streamed.

I'm not really some kind of an activist that thinks a few dollars will make a difference. That's not really the purpose of this conversation. I'm really just irritated of the notion that Twitch is some kind of an untouchable entity that is completely infallible. I think that they should be more clear about their banning practices and work with developers who wish to pass their rules, that's all. I just find it hypocritical to ban games like Yandere Simulator when God of War 3 and GTA5 both contain gratuitous violence that goes against their own rules.

Of course, your choice of words here is odd. You're saying that you give them money for a purpose as if you have some control over the way they use it. You don't.

It would be preposterous to imply I had some control over Twitch because I support them but I do have control over my support. It's a well known practice to cut support to a company if you think it's acting against your interests.

Also, I doubt their advertisers want to be associated with trash anyway.

Do you think Yandere Simulator is a trash game? For what reasons exactly?

Twitch is a business. Not a public service.

It's a business that relies as much on viewers as it does on advertisers. Actually, if it was a public service, then they could behave anyway they wanted because it wouldn't affect their funding.

From a post on /r/gamedev:

Ex-volunteer for Yandere Simulator here. This isn't the first time Alex Mahan(aka Evaxephon) has tried to militarize his following against someone. He did it back in his streaming days, he did it against Mike Z, and he doxed and tried to send his stream following to attack and harm a young woman live on his stream. Hell his 8chan following even tried to dox me.

Google "Evaxephon" if you want to see who YandereDev really is and details on his behavior. And no this isn't personal information. He regularly publicizes his stream on the official Yandere Dev wordpress to get his following to watch his "anniversary" stream where he does shit like this. It's no wonder his game was banned but its such a wonder why someone like him legitimately think's there is no reason for his game being banned when he is clearly sexualizing minors and providing an atmosphere of minors killing other minors within a high school and so forth. It's very, very obvious why his game is banned at this point so trying to extract "communication" over it is not going to change much. He keeps going back and forth between "I'm not going to change the game for anyone" and then "If twitch tells me why then I'll compromise for their sake". He even explicitly tried to add a "all characters are 18+, even if otherwise specified" disclaimer to try and wiggle his way out of the PR heat he was getting.

I think worst of all is that this whole situation is "Me! Me!!!!! Help me!!!" but he tries to rile up a public attack on Twitch by going "This is a PSA for all game developers, go fight my fight". He complains bi-weekly about getting an avalanche of emails, yet he wishes for it upon Twitch. This is a damn raid. And he has a big enough personal army to fight for any "cause" he tries to push towards. Ever since he got called out for his panty-inventory system he has been more public in his whole "anyone that disagrees with me and yandere simulator is an Ess-Jay-Double-yoo" type of thing to soften nay-sayers up for his audience to attack.

Alex is probably reading this and is ready to pounce my email with some bs again.

I'm done following this game.

I'm done following this game.

I googled the name and, yikes, I wasn't expecting the hole to go that deep.

It could be argued that most of the shitty things he did/say under that name are in the past, but if the dev's current behavior is of any indication, dude is still an asshole. What a shame. Game lacked polish and is currently very messy, but the idea was interesting enough for me to watch its development.

"In defense of twitch"

Yandere Devs non-apology apology.

Notes from it:
  • Probably shouldn't have made the last video, especially when he was so riled up
  • Thinks there are a few very logical reasons why twitch didn't get back to him he missed in the first video
  • Is willing to make multiple concessions to have a twitch friendly version he previously was not willing to make (remove panty shots, censor violence, put towels on all characters in the locker room)
  • Would still have a completely uncensored version for non twitch pla

A very reasoned even toned message compared to his last.

Dude's a shithole but I still don't think the game shouldn't be made, has no place nor should it be banned from Twitch. Twitch is within it's rights to do so and I'm not gonna lose any sleep tho.

He received a response from twitch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXbQfGyxGDM

tl;dr of it is that they'll consider unbanning the game when its feature complete so they can "review" its content, they also told him to get his game rated by the ESRB

Honestly what I was kind of expecting when/if they ever responded. A game in flux like this would be hard to unban and stay unbanned.

(Edit) he once again conspiracy theories at the end a bit much... But still, at least there are answers.
