Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

Huh, some of you guys don't like the casino level? I love that world - It might have been my favorite overall. It's bright, colorful, varied with a bunch of different sights and challenges (and most importantly, none of them are really misfires or tiresome trudges like the other worlds'), and it has the coolest transformation.

And don't forget the absolute worst, broken and infuriating Retro minigame out of them all. Took me a ton of tries to get the 1st pagie and the pagie for the high score took me several days. Framerate would often jump while in the middle of a dodge completely screwing me when i was otherwise doing a perfect run. It was by dumb luck that i finally made it through for the high score pagie. Terrible minigame that needed alot more tuning. But the Casino level overall? Yes, it was very good.

Finally platinumed the PS4 version a couple days ago.

Overall i really enjoyed it, and i hope that Yooka Tooie or whatever it ends up being will be even better!

It's having a reverse-race with 90s Arcade Racer. Whoever releases first loses.
It really feels that way. I respect that Playtonic is busting their humps getting it ready for release, but I’m pissed that it’s being held up by Unity issues (like Battle Chasers: Nightwar).

So as I mentioned as a small sidenote in that Jontron a Hat in Time thread tonight, the hype for Super Mario Odyssey is really getting to me, and I sorta want an appetizer or two to hold me over since I'm craving collect-a-thons for the first time in a while!

So I remember when this game came out, some friends convinced me to hold off buying it due to a lot of issues the game has had.

Since then, I haven't paid attention to it, but I've heard that patches have fixed some of the really bad stuff like the camera, which sounds nice. So I'll probably get this game before Super Mario Odyssey comes out (along side a Hat in Time) unless there are some HUGE problems that would ward me off. I just got a few questions!

1. Which versions of the game are 60 FPS? In all honesty, for once I'd prefer to get the PS4 version because used versions appear to be quite cheap. HOWEVER, if the PS4 (or Xbox One version for that matter) aren't 60 FPS, then I'll grin and bear the 40 bucks for the PC version (do tell me if there's a cheaper option though, that'd be nice lol)

2. I heard a lot of bad stuff about the minigames and other side content. Is there any super cool unlockable for doing everything, or is it just something silly? I'm normally a completionist, but if the side content is as bad as people were saying, I don't mind leaving them lie if I'm not missing out on a huge chunk of the game. To use a rareware example... I'm hoping it isn't something like "you better play jetpac to face the final boss lol"

3. What's on the horizon for updates regarding this game? Not too big of a deal, but I'm curious!

4. So the hardest question: I like rareware's oldschool stuff quite a bit (yeah even DK 64 despite it going too far with its collectables lol). I'm under the impression that while this game is targeted towards people like me, that this game certainly doesn't hold up to say, the Banjo games. Is this game going to feel like too much of a pale imitation, or if, despite not being as good as them, will this still be a decent facsimile to hold me over till Mario takes over my world?

EDIT: DOH, I was an idiot and didn't read the OP, seems like it answers some of my questions lol. Still, has anything changed since the patches? x_x

Only the PC version is 60 fps. The console versions are not optimised for the Pro / X version of their respective consoles.

First, I don't think the mini games are bad, there is one that is (the first Rextro game is quite bad) and some others are maybe a bit more challenging than some would like, but it's not like Yooka is filled with garbage. On the other hand, if you decide to skip a few challenges because you are not enjoying them, you will not lose anything except an achievement. You get no bonusses for getting 100% and there are no pagies except for the first one that you are absolutely required to get. Choose the pagies you like, get 100 of them (leaving about 40 optional ones) and you can complete the story of the game.

3. What's on the horizon for updates regarding this game? Not too big of a deal, but I'm curious!
Mainly: There is one piece of download content planned that is free for backers and the orchestrated soundtrack and 64 bit style are still coming. Previous updates have improved camera controls and some qol improvements like easier restarts for some challenges.

If you like DK64, you will definitely enjoy Yooka-Laylee. It is basically Banjo-Kazooie on the scale of DK64. It is not as good as Banjo-Kazooie, but it has quite a few nice ideas and I think it is consistently better than DK64. Well, the minecart sections are a bit better in DK64 over the ones in Yooka. It will not feel like a bad imitation, I think, but like what one would expect, had the same team just continued making collectathons on the GameCube. It has a design firmly rooted in the N64 collectathon mindset, so if you do not enjoy this mindset, you will find a lot to hate in Yooka, but if you actually, to this day, like this concept, you will have a blast.

Personally, Yooka-Laylee is my favourite game of the year so far, beating Sonic Mania and Zelda Breath of the Wild. It will not exceed Zelda for many, I think, but I am certain that if you enjoyed DK64 there is no way you will not enjoy YL, if your taste hasn't changed significantly.

The PC (Steam) version is currently 41% off over at GamersGate.

I kickstarted this game (something close to $100 USD) and finally just got a chance to play it due to being busy. I have to say I am severely dissapointed by Yooka Laylee. The feel, look, art design, and music was fantastic and really well done. It spot on looked and sounded like what I’d expect a modern 3D Rare game to be. The dialouge I also thought was hillarious and well done and I loved how the characters were designed.

That being said the worlds are just so empty and the controls are so off. The controls don’t feel tight enough to me and I feel that the characters move too fast. I love how in Banjo Kazooie the worlds are simple and you can play around and figure out what to do. There is way too much emptyness in this game. Between that and the controls/physics I was very disapointed. It makes me sad because I really wanted a successor to Banjo and love the old Rareware games but this was too misguided for me.

I agree completely. It had massive potential but being empty and controlling worse than 20 year old platformers just killed it for me.

I played some of this today, despite backing the Kickstarter I've only had two sessions playing this so far. I never played Banjo or Conker so my only comparison is to DK64, but I enjoy the game enough to keep playing in future.

I definitely agree about emptiness though, the world size would be more fitting in Ratchet & Clank because there would be more enemies filling the space due to the combat mechanics. Here I'm just keeping the roll energy decrease augment on because I need to move from place to place with some speed to keep things moving.

I'm surprised thst the aiming camera stays static when you're on a moving platform. That's a bug I think every player has experienced yet it's still unpatched.

What kind of resolution can we expect from the Switch port, in both docked and portable modes?

We’re running at 900p docked and 600p undocked, while the UI always renders at 1080p, which we’re really happy with and is competitive with other games. This is the balance we’re most happy with, one that still looks great and runs as smooth as possible. Our priority for Nintendo Switch was to deliver players a smooth, optimised experience and we hope they’ll be pleased with how the game looks and runs.

How close will the Switch port be to the Xbox One and PS4 versions, in visual terms? Have you had to make any big graphical sacrifices to get it running on the system?

We’ve actually made improvements and this is definitely the most optimised version of the game. Our priority with the Switch version was to deliver a smooth experience for players, so some compromises naturally had to be made, such as comprimises a small amount of resolution for better performance and optimisations. However, it’s nothing that we think players will notice, especially in handheld mode on that excellent screen. In fact, some elements such as shadows are actually improved since the original release! We’re really pleased with how this version is running.
