Your favorite LGBT characters in Game

Kanji X Naoto is OTP, people who romance her have no heart.

You got my support! I really loved both of those characters. And I thought it was cute how Kanji reacted around Naoto. :)

I wanted to add, I don't think it's entirely fair to shoot down someone from bringing up Kanji or Naoto though. I think both address gender issues pretty heavily, and I dunno. Personally, I think gender issues can go hand in hand with sexual preference. Or rather, societies issues with gender/sexual preferences can be interlinked.

Indeed. It's not hard to see how one could interpret Naoto as genderqueer, for example; regardless of her or Kanji's sexuality (the latter is still very open to interpretation in my opinion), both are complex characters who highlight real identity issues that young people go through. This alone is very meaningful and both characters resonated with me - and doubtless other LGBT fans - in a strong way.

Wasn't that because of how they hit him when he entered their tent? And they used that to play on the nosebleed trope which is absent from the rest of the games?

Was it? I didn't remember that, thanks for the clarification.

Edit: I agree with the rest by the way. Kanji's thing is about how insecure he is about his sexuality, how he's made fun of for knitting and all. So he compensates by trying to be this manly guy, and then Naoto comes and he's even more insecure and unsure. He's frightened when unknown people (the main character and the gang) follow him when he's at his most unstable state of mind yet.

He has this idea of what it is to be a man and a woman, what it is to be straight and gay, and he's unsure where his hobbies and traits, like his kindness for others seen in his S. Link, fit. He hides what others see as feminine because he was made fun of and now at his time of change - he is the youngest of the crew - he's unsure about his sexuality. His insecurity manifests in his typical homosexual stereotype, as that's what's on his mind, that's what he's afraid of, and the bathhouse appearance and the boss follow in the same vein. In the end, I don't think it's as simple as saying he's completely straight or completely gay. He's a complex character which is why another reason I love that game.

I was nodding all the way through. Kanji is great. <3

Trying to summarize Kanji's entire character arc as being about him being gay or straight is missing the point and doing basically the same thing that started Kanji's troubles and insecurity in the first place. It's more about breaking out of those stereotypes and not letting something as harmless as a hobby define your gender identity and/or sexual orientation.

Kanji is a man because he identifies as such, no matter how feminine some of his traits are considered. Kanji's sexuality is defined by the gender(s) he feels attracted to, not by his hobbies, or the fact that he was confused about his sexuality.

As someone else said, it can be a bit disappointing when people are starving for well developed gay characters (especially back when Persona 4 came out, it's a bit better these days), but Kanji's arc goes beyond that discussion. After all, being in doubt about your sexuality isn't "how gay am I?", he could still end up figuring himself out as straight or bi, the fact that he had doubts and ended up not being gay (or at least not explicitly refered to as such) doesn't mean Atlus didn't have the balls to do so, as some people still seem to believe, even after Erica in Catherine, when they showed they're definitely not "afraid" of making LGBT characters.

I know we're talking fictional characters, but I just want to give a shout out to Ricki Sophie Ortiz.

Amazing player. All the love for you, Sophie!

Do you know why she changed Ricky to Ricki? I thought it was a typo from the tournament organizers when I first saw it, then I went to her twitter and it indeed said Ricki.

Oh definitely, but you can see that the thread reacted positively overall, just by looking at how the whole Kanji discussion is still going. It's a wonderful take on gender roles, regardless of the outcome, and is a great background to discuss such things in gaming.

Kasmeer and Marjory from Guild Wars 2

And with the most recent patch Sya/Symon as a Transgender. (Guild Wars2 too)

Is "newhalf" really equivalent to "transgender" instead of more something less respectful like "shemale", though? Because I see that tag a lot when I'm... doing... research.

Do trans people in Japan identify themselves as a "newhalf"?

It's equivalent to the English terms "tranny" or "shemale", in that they are the terms used in the porn industry, but it's actually considered rude if you were to call someone that. Just like how you would use the English terms to describe a transgendered person.

As I suspected, then. What would the correct term be, then?

Forgot about that Mario Galaxy thing.

Was it? I didn't remember that, thanks for the clarification.

Agreed with the rest and about that part, yeah, Yosuke was his own insecure self and giving Kanji a hard time because of how they were all three in the tent. Kanji gets mad and wants to prove he's a man or something so he leaves and tries to get in another tent - Yukiko, Chie's and Hanako. The former two can't sleep because of the latter's snoring. Kanji comes in, they don't know who it is and get scared and knock him out. They then go to MC's and Yosuke's tent because Morooka is roaming and drunk. Then the next morning Kanji talks about how he woke up there and felt like shit and his nose hurt.

From what I can find, toransu-kei no hito or sei ten kan sha seems to be the polite way. This is just coming from google, so I don't know if it's 100% accurate, I ended up taking Zhongwen instead of Nihongo ^_^.

One that I don't suspect many people will have even heard of is Geldoblame from the Baten Kaitos games. It's pretty intense spoilers, but to sum up it's revealed at the end of the prequel (Baten Kaitos Origins) that he had been having sexual and presumably romantic relations with one of the other male characters.

Fire Emblem's Ike x Soren.

You can say they're straight and just good friends and Ike has a descendant in Awakening all you want, but all I see is another 1950's Hollywood type of situation where Nintendo chose to be as subtle and vague as possible versus directly stating their homosexuality.

Oh, and of course the guys from Coming Out on Top.

Trevor from Phantasmagoria 2

Gay best friend of the main character. He initially appears like a stereotype in the beginning, but turns out to be the best character in the game. His relationship with the main character, who is bisexual, was hinted at becoming more than friends if story related things did not happen.

I thought Kanji's dungeon just reflected the old stereotype of how liking "girly" stuff is used an indicator for not being straight.

To me his sexuality doesn't seem to really matter, he's just scared shitless of being made fun of and being stereotyped to be of any certain sexuality just for liking the things he likes. After he faces himself, he embraces that true manliness is about not caring about that and just goes to act and like whatever the hell he wants without worrying about stereotyping or being made fun of.

Oh Trevor... If only things went differently. ):

Veronica from Fallout New Vegas, best companion character in the game
Absolutely. She's easily my favorite character in the game. She's fun and charming, her sidequest is touching and her powerfist wrecks shop.

Wish she could have met her old love again. T_T

For the amount of attention to detail Obsidian put into the game, this omission really peeves me. They gave Veronica special dialog for the courier letting her know that Father Elijah was the one behind the events of Dead Money, but you can't tell her that you found Christine. Boo.

Also disappointed she doesn't respond to the courier having the Cherchez La Femme perk...

Can't really think of many examples, but I just recently played Gone Home. Without getting into spoiler territory, the ending is so, soooooo sweet.

Vivian from Paper Mario. The only good trans character in a console game that I've played.

* There could also be a good trans character in some indie PC game I've never heard of.

Kanji isn't gay though.

But my personal choice is from another Atlus game, Catherine.

Erica best girl <3

EDIT: It's awfully hard to find good screenshots of her, most underrated waifu ever

Eww.

Trevor in Phantasmagoria 2 is probably of the first in games, and is also probably one of the greatest and most genuine of all time.

Philippa Eilhart in the Witcher series is totally badass too, but she has source material to work off of/she's a book character, so her inclusion here isn't entirely fair, but it's fine.

Could you expand on this? I thought she was a great character.

Affected by the "curse' that only affects men.
"Tricking" a straight guy into having sex sex with her.
Her friends actively trying to sabotage her relationship.

At least she's better than the trans characters in Persona 3 I guess.

Also, Ike's "descendant" in Awakening doesn't even Aether and his "Ragnell" has limited durability.

There's a Steven Universe game for mobile (Attack the Light).

I guess technically Garnet doesn't count, since she's (Steven Universe spoilers)
made of a lesbian relationship but is herself celibate.
But Pearl? Great character, and the show does a great job of showing her unrequited love for Rose Quartz as both beautiful and painful.

While I mostly think the English translation of The Thousand Year Door is astounding, removing this detail was pretty terrible.

Eeeh, I can see why some people have that impression, but I didn't get it at all.

Her being affected just showed to me that it was about your biological birth body, and not the gender you indentify with, similarly, a trans man wouldn't have those dreams. It's just a curse, not a statement on who Atlus thinks should have equal rights or anything like that.
I didn't get the impression that she tricked him at all, and why is it that the "straight guy" part matters? Who would she, as a straight (I assume) woman have sex with "without tricking" then? This makes no sense to me.

Her treatment by her friends is the one thing that I think causes most of the discontent about her, but I just see it as her being part of the group. They give crap to each other, but I've never felt she was actually seen negatively or excluded from the bunch because of that. She very much felt like part of the team to me, all the way through.

People give each other crap and poke fun at each other, doesn't mean they don't respect her. At least that was my impression. Sure, there are things like "how would you know how a woman feels?", but I've always seen it as just them giving crap to each other instead of actual discrimination. It's a somewhat realistic portrayal, in my opinion, respect doesn't come only in pretending the past never happened, and seeing cases where people move to transition because everyone around them wouldn't accept them, I don't think being around her friends is such a terrible portrayal.

But as I said, I can definitely see why you'd interpret that way. But "eew" is a bit too much.
