SSF2HDR - this was my introduction to playing a fighting game online
SSFIV - countless hours wasted on this
Lara Croft - one of the best co-op experiences I've had
Mario Kart Wii - the best online game on Wii
Gears of war 2 - had a blast playing co-op with a friend

Future online games
Diablo 3
Marvel VS Capcom 3
Mortal Kombat
Twisted Metal
LittleBigPlanet 2 (still haven't bought it)
Uncharted 3
Ratchet All 4 One
Journey
Gears of War 3
BattleField 3
another FPS games (either COD or Resistance 3)

seems the future is bright for online games, tons of variety

This is the only real answer here.

Simply the most innovative integration of online gaming to be seen in a game in several years, when it comes to multiplayer Demons Souls is WAY ahead of its time. People complaining about the lack of "traditional" coop are simply missing the beauty at work here: this isn't just about playing the same game with your friends in a done-to-death coop or deathmatch style, it's about the online component actually enhancing the overall experience.

I mean, seeing ghosts of other people playing the game at the same time as you? Being able to see the bloodstains of where others have died, thus being indirectly warned about the threats lurking ahead? And above all, being healed the moment someone recommends a message you've left, thus encouraging you to leave helpful messages for others, and thus indirectly eliminating the need for tutorials/hand-holding in several sections while also strengthening the feeling of comradery among players, then finally tipping it all upside down and allowing the same players to invade your game at any time and backstab you when you're not even looking?

...Fucking genius

I'll be different and say White Knight Chronicles.

With a bunch of friends, this game was sooo addictive and fun for me. Clocked at 1100 hours, I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

It brings a tear to my eye seeing the love for warhawk.

My other nomination outside of the others mentioned that I prefer (KZ2, RFoM, UC2) I have to pick MK II on PSN. I've never had more fun playing a fighter online as I do with that game. Reptile FTW!

Demon's Souls, as everyone has already mentioned.

Shadowrun was very, very fun for quite some time. My friends and I pretty much steamrolled everyone in every public game we played, so we got tired of it after a while since there wasn't much competition. Fantastic game though, easily the best console FPS since Halo CE.

Left 4 Dead was a lot of fun for a couple months, but it wound up in the same situation as Shadowrun. Public versus games got boring after a while, and co-op gets boring after a few runs, even on the highest difficulty. Great game though.

Street Fighter 4 and HD Remix are always fun if you're playing on a good connection. I've probably played 4000+ matches between all three games.

QFTW

Also, I think Bad Company 2 and MAG are fantastic as well.

Definitely Modern Warfare 2. I think it's the best multiplayer FPS ever made (at least until the hackers came along). My relatives and I have put countless hours into the multiplayer on this one. I didn't even like COD before it.

Transformers: War for Cybertron easily.

Shame it never had a huge community, and they went and screwed it up anyway.

Shadowrun.

From the Beta where we got to play with the developers, or they'd just sneak into a game with all of us and listen to issues, to past launch when the community was dwindling in anticipation for Halo 3. The maps were all excellent, the gameplay was balanced and diverse. You thought you'd seen it all and then you run in to two guys working together to pull off crazy combos (my favorite was when a friend and I were abusing Gust to keep enemies stuck in Strangle and then we realized we had enough for a rocket. There is nothing like seeing an elf attempt to struggle against Strangle while being forced back into it as someone aims a rocket from the ledge above.

Or using Gust on the ground followed by an immediate Glider to fly to the top of any map. There was literally so many possibilities of how a game could go down. Games on the Temple could transition from a huge outdoor battle to the inside of it with people running on scaffolding and dodging into tunnels. You always thought you'd seen it all when you turned off your console and then the next time you're playing something new comes up.

Most unique game I've played online. Pandora Tomorrow comes close but that eventually became kind of predictable -- the Shadowrun community was pretty much always ahead of one another.

Think I might run out and look for a copy to buy tomorrow. I miss it so much :(

Wii Sports/Resort.

Fun for players of all kinds. Everlasting quality and universal appeal. Pretty much the go-to titles for small gaming get-togethers or parties.

Oh I'm sorry, I thought that this thread said 'favourite multiplayer experiences,' I must have interpreted it wrong.

I know you don't actually think everyone else is wrong, you're just using hyperbole for the sake of it, but it's still fucking annoying. Don't do it.

Left 4 Dead 1. I had a crazy time with a lot of my friends in here, both trekking through on expert and being a great team together in versus. We had so many great moments stopping the other team right outside their spawn room, and just making mad dashes to the exits at times leaving everyone behind. So much fun.

Super Smash Bros Brawl for same room Multiplayer
Starcraft 2 for online.
Call of Duty MW2 for console shooter. But this thread is making me really want to try some Killzone and Uncharted.

I'm really really hoping that this next generation of handhelds will lead to some incredible multiplayer experiences. Monster Hunter, I'm lookin at you.

I don't think I have had more fun and variety than Team Fortress 2. The core game is already fantastic, fun, and has a lot of great mechanics that make you feel like you are having fun and improving without winning or an experience system. What really makes this game my favorite is all the weird mods and foreign places you end up in if you explore that server browser. I don't think I ever laughed as hard when my friend and I ended up on some Korean server and the lag was so bad that we were able to kill everyone with Medic bonesaws. Or when we ended up on this one map where the two teams were fighting on a giant staircase and people exploded in confetti whenever they died. Truly a fantastic multiplayer game for the ages.

Warhawk will probably be the only game this generation (minus Uncharted) that I will think fondly about 10 years from now. The game is multiplayer perfection. You can play so many rolls within a game, and each is very important. The maps are vast, and the graphics are very clean. Each time I hear someone mention it, I have no choice but to play. I think thats what I'm going to do now.

yes

TF2 (PC), COD 4 (360, PC), Bad Company 2 (PC)

I'm sure I'll be adding BF3 to that list also. Bring it on!!

Edit: How could I forget RB6 Vegas! (1, not the shit sequel)

Left4Dead (1 and 2)

Castle Crashers

Killing Floor

In terms of co-op (not a big MP guy), Halo Reach by far.
Worst would be Gears 2 in co-op, enjoyed the first one that way though.

Team Fortress 2. Game is fan-frickin-tastic.

I think I need to play Warhawk sometime, I see people mention it so frequently, I bought it but haven't cracked it open.

Honorable mention to the recently released Magicka. I've never had so much fun dying and killing my friends. It's hook mechanic is great as well, truly unique experience.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (PC)

Hands down. A few niggling issues holds it back (updaterate limited to 30, goddamn console version!), but it's probably the best online shooter I've played. The balance between infantry and vehicles is perfect, nothing is too strong and nothing is too weak. The pace is super fast (for a team-based shooter) with lots of room to improve your skills (advanced movement, versatile tools and interesting weapons) and great selection of superb maps to play on. The best thing though was the community; I could count the slurs I encountered on two hands, the rest of the time it was all people working together. Such a great game, I'm super excited for Brink.

If only Stopwatch had been more popular than Campaign on pub servers... I’d probably never stop playing it.

Quake Live - Clan Arena (short rounds, fast paced, without powerup camping)

Left 4 Dead 2 - Realism Versus (ordinary Versus is too forgiving, this adds much more intensity/stress and shorten long ass campaigns)

Demon's Souls - The online adds life to a vast and fantastic universe.

Is there still a community for this, Danne?

Super Acrobatic-Rocket Powered Battle-Cars

Soccer with cars that can boost and then fly with the right touch. It's amazingly fun and still hasn't really gotten old for me. I still play it frequently but not quite as much due to having more games but this is still my go to game.

You have have up to 8 player matches online and even take a split screen of 4 online as well. And like myself, the community is still very active at the right hours in the US. The EUR version is always busy. You can tell where the futbol community is :P

I had so much fun with Warhawk's multiplayer... but the love for UC2's multiplayer makes me want to finally give it a go.

Last I checked (a couple of months ago), yeah, there should be at least a dozen full servers running. I think it's healthiest here in Europe though, can't vouch for anyplace else.
