Pretty much anything Marty O'Donnell worked on for Bungie. The Bungie Halo games are my favorites, closely followed by Destiny. Destiny 2 has its moments too.

I'm also a sucker for Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10. And the Killer Instinct theme.

A lot of great choices in this thread, I have many but these stick out more than others:

Most FF soundtracks
Ultima 6 (esp on an MT32, damn)
Chrono Trigger OST
Castlevania

Anything from Falcom is generally great.

And a song from a game I'm currently playing through atm.

Metal gear solid 3
Last of us

Especially love the slow acoustic bit in the metal gear solid 3 main theme. Probably my favourite piece of music of all time

For me, the unique sound of the SID chip will always be something special. Not to mention the fact that for a long time, they programmed C64 music in assembly because there wasn't a tracker or similar

Rob Hubbard was the king, he made so many classics but here are some of my favourites

Monty on the run

I was just listening to a lot of Rob's work over the last week or so. Blasting out his beats in the shower is a hell of a way to start the day.

ff6-9 are my faves
I'd never played ff6 fully through until last year, even though I'd been listening to the OST for years and it was one of my greats

Skyrim's up there

Original Tomb Raider for nostalgia:

If you recognise where this 2nd track plays in the game- was a magical experience at the time.

There are really only 2 for me.

1. Chrono Cross - the best music ever

2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - second best music ever

3. Final Fantasy Games -most of these are good and fall into my #3 slot

Halo 5 main theme, the one on the menu is superb. I think it was created by a japanese composer, but not sure.

Some of my favorites, but certainly not all:

Also awesome: Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 2, Secret of Mana, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Phantasy Star 2, Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV, Grandia, Dragon Force...too many to list. Funnily enough, I don't listen to any of these (game music in general) outside of the games, so the fact that I can distinctly remember them, even when I'm not playing the game, just tells me that I truly do like how they sound and they left an impression.

Definitely Xenoblade for me... That game is pure magic! I listen to the OST constantly while working or whatever... I even started learning to read scores just so I could play them on flute.

I always go back to the original Witcher soundtrack, there's something incredibly melancholic and beatiful about that music. I don't think that the original composer ever returned for the sequels, even though the music for them is good too.

I'm weird I suppose. I tend to rarely notice music in games while movies on other hand like say raiders of the lost ark I am very aware of the music.

This post will take me ages to really sort them out, so I'll just say my top 10:

1: Final Fantasy XIV: Online (1.0 - 5.0)
2. Chrono Trigger / Chrono Cross
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner
5. Final Fantasy IX
6. Persona 5
7. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
8. Metal Gear Solid
9. Final Fantasy X
10. The Elder's Scrolls: Skyrim

I have so many more. I will continue to post more as I think of them.

I could go on and on about soundtracks and sound design. I know we're talking about *video* games, but the sound can really reach me on an emotional level in ways that visuals simply can't.

Rather than list some of the more obvious ones, I'll just highlight one that I thought did an excellent job establishing mood consistent with the narrative and setting. The tracks are simple, but that is no slight. A couple of my favorites from the OST:

I feel that I can go into a Ys game pretty much blind and it's gonna have at least a half dozen tracks that rock my balls. Also pick a Guilty Gear for the same reason. I'll just pick 2 at random I guess:

(special mention to the Bravely Default series too)
