Your milkshake duck

I was always under the impression that Milkshake Duck was either someone who quickly rose to prominence only to turn out bad, or whom you discovered, loved, and realized they were awful in very quick succession

Not that I'm dismissing anyone's answers, just that a lot of them seem to go against that.

It's only a rapid ascent/descent thanks to modern media consumption habits. Used to take years before folks learned unpleasant things about their heroes but the phenomenon is identical.

Aids deniers? Now I have seen it all.

Foo Fighters used to "support" Alive and Well, an organisation that denied the links between HIV and AIDS. Linked on their website, played at least one show in support if I recall, but it's no longer there and may have just been one member of the band.

On that note, Michael Crichton was a firm denier of the human impact on climate change "State of Fear" was written and used very suspect climate data and he spoke at a university about why we shouldn't work to reduce the impact (basically, 500 years ago they didn't have planes or electricity, so who knows what we'll come up with!)

I mean it's not that far fetched, Isis pretty much proves that. Genocide of course is a crazy idea, but that's just a fiction. There should be some sort of supervision on islam extremists that poision the minds of the masses.
This way of thinking certainly doesn't put him in the same line with racists/homophobes/misogynistics.

You're telling me that calling for the genocide of an entire, diverse, religion isn't as bad as being a racist, homophobe, or misogynist?

I just reread some of it and it was his grandson not son, so apologies. It's not terribly long and you can read this drivel yourself and come back and defend it if you want. You should also read up on his book Flashback, which is pure right wing wankery, about a dystopian world of 2032 that Obama caused.

Edit:
I'd still recommend Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion, because they are extremely well written. I think Anita Sarkeesian always makes a point that it's possible to enjoy an entertainment while recognising its problematic features, and I apply that principle here.

Yeah I get that, I certainly do enjoy somethings like that, just this one really hit me hard. There was some hint of weird anti-Islam stuff near the end of Olympos, but I assumed it was just him taking the piss out of another religion like he did with Catholicism. It turned out to be much worse.

Jimmy Saville

Adored him and that fucking show as a kid.

You, and millions of others. Saville puts all the choices in here to shame, from being such a beloved figure (thankfully I was a generation too young to know who he was), and the heinousness of his activities.

Like...no one beats Saville.

Has there ever been an author more racist and fearful of black people in the history of literature more than HP Lovecraft?

Planetary's jab at his racism was great.

There was a novel last year by a black author that played off one of his more racist short stories

Still need to read it myself but it got some pretty big acclaim and AMC picked it up for a show.

Plague of Gripes
Really at this point I'm lowkey prepared for Pat to end up a Milkshake Duck. Woolie, Liam, and Mat have never given me any red flags, quite the opposite honestly with Liam and Mat.

Yeah, I liked Plague for a good while but then he started saying stuff that pandered to that audience so I bailed. It shouldn't have been that suprising actually considering where he's from.

Seriously finding out any the zaibatsu are like that would be brutal. I'd like to think they have too many ties and fans that fall into the Black and LGBT communities for them to be that way but who knows? YouTubers seem to close ranks and side with pieces of garbage whenever they feel that they are under threat. I do agree Pat is the most likely to be a milkshake duck though. I love the guy but he is an asshole plus Paige going on that Alt-right podcast doesn't inspire confidence.

"Oh, hey, this guy is maining an underrepresented character and made it fairly far at EVO this year. Maybe we should all keep an eye on this up and coming player."

*two days later*

"Whoops, he's an attempted rapist"

I liked Lost Prophets as a young teenager.

I was surprised to learn a few years ago the band still toured and didn't just disappear in the mid 00s, Then a bit later extra surprised when the lead singer got sent to jail for literally trying to rape a baby.

Plague of Gripes

I'm a huge Super Best Friend's Zaibatsu fan and for awhile was interested on Plague because of how often they'd bring him up

Turns out he got his fans to say "faggot" as an injoke and defended it(While also being an aggressive "im right, youre wrong" asshole to people rightfully offended) by saying it's not a slur its a cigarette

he's a goddamn southern American, and we all know what the only fags they know are

So now it makes me extra uncomfortable whenever they bring him up, as if he isn't a homophobe

Paige also rubs me the wrong way with how she went after Anita and appeared on an altright podcast

Really at this point I'm lowkey prepared for Pat to end up a Milkshake Duck. Woolie, Liam, and Mat have never given me any red flags, quite the opposite honestly with Liam and Mat.

Fuck. This is disheartening.. What altright podcast, and what did she talk about?

Oh actually, doesn't Gandhi count as well? I remember looking up to him a lot after learning about him in high school, and then being absolutely mortified when I found out what he was actually like. :(

He was a racist and a creep. As an Indian it breaks my heart that he's probably our most well-known historical figure and thinker

I'll check this out.

I'll second the recommendation. I got it and The Horror at Red Hook, read Lovecraft first, then LaValle second. The latter was definitely more modern with its writing and did a good job of providing a back-end story to Horror at Red Hook. Think of it as a "Wicked" to "Wizard of Oz" style.

Mel Gibson, Bill Cosby, and Orson Scott Card were probably the biggest Milkshake Duck moments for me.

Also a couple my personal life I won't get into in detail, but it really sucks when someone you care about personally turns out to be an unapologetic reprehensible scumbag.

The Last Night is a pretty astonishing case for how damn quick it was.

"Man, this E3 fucking blows. Might be the worst one to date. Huh? What's this? Holy crap, this looks gorgeous! All this neon and weather, whoa this looks straight outta Blade Runner! Now this is Game of the Show! Lemme look this up online to see more about it. What's that? The guy behind it is a GamerGator? He legitimately believes feminism will bring about the demise of society? The reason for the dystopia in the game is because he honestly thinks universal basic income will rob humanity of it's ingenuity?

....man, this E3 fucking blows."

I did not know this, but does it actually negate the positive actions and philosophies he has brought to society?

Some pedophilia and anti-black racism isn't enough to negate "the positive actions and philosophies he brought to society" since he's still mentioned as an all time ambassador of peace or whatever

but the pedophilia and anti-black racism is gross as fuck for an all time ambassador of peace or whatever

Fuck. This is disheartening.. What altright podcast, and what did she talk about?

I think it was called The Dick Show or something? Guy that runs it is a mega piece of shit. And I'm not sure what she talked about, didn't listen, but just appearing on it is enough to make me wary.

I haven't been following that did plague say specifically? I think one recent Art Gripe he was talking about "women and men are hardwired instinctively differently" which I was kinda miffed at, yet the whole point of the talk still came to "just talk to people like their people"

Anyway Woolie hates eggs and bacon for breakfast so fuck that guy

It'd destroy me :( They helped me through some shitty years and discovering one of them(or multiple) are secretly assholes would be horrible.

Some disturbing stories about Louis C.K. made me sad and I can no longer fully enjoy his comedy.

More recently the creator of Earthworm Jim.

What is hard to understand about this? A person that keeps close company with bad people is likely to end up also being a bad person.

About a year or two ago he defended him and his followers saying "fag/faggot" as jokes because gays arent faggots, fags are cigarettes(He's American)

Which were what exactly? I don't regard pacifism as a virtue in the face of oppression, especially when it goes as far as calling on the Jews of Europe to commit mass suicide rather than take up arms against the Nazis
What he said is not justifiable, I agree. His actions and philosophies have shaped how people have interacted with each other in peaceful ways AT THE TIME.
*Reflection time*
Maybe it is just that some historical figures become irrelevant over time as their beliefs become outdated, but at the time what they said was revolutionary and shaped the outcomes of conflicts. I'm sure if he were alive today his beliefs would change as well to be more inclusive and understanding. Fuck, man. I don't know, we don't know.
Its great we can be critical of certain aspects and praise others.

I give him a pass for that, but, I do not give him a pass at all for his 2002 arrest where they found kiddie shit and he explained it off as vintage art.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought that was thrown out because it was a collection of vintage gay porn magazines which had advertisements featuring half naked little boys (which at the time of publication was not illegal). I don't believe he was collecting kiddie porn. It is just a reality of collecting vintage material.

I thought that was Jeffery Jones not Paul Rubens.

JonTron definitely.

I always thought "Wow this guy is great, I would love to meet him one day"

And then it became "Oh, this guy literally thinks I'm inferior to him because of my race, when he isn't even fully white himself. Huh."

It'd be like having a friend for a long time and them saying "You know, you're a good person, for a _____"

Ken Bone did nothing wrong. All he did was forget to make a throwaway account for his Reddit AMA, which led to people looking through his history and finding a joke comment on an NSFW picture of a pregnant woman.

Even if it wasn't a joke comment, big whoop. Everyone looks at porn and everyone has specific stuff that they're into. The only shitty people in the story were the ones writing clickbait articles about the guy that could have ruined his life just because they thought it would be a good source of ad revenue.

Billy Corgan being a wacko

Haha, best first reply. I'm a huge Pumpkins fan but I try to separate the art from the artist considering how much of a fruit bat he is.

Thing is, he's always been a douche and seems to burn through his friends and relationships quicker than he can make them so the conspiracy theory stuff is just a cherry on top.

Learning that Gandhi was a racist towards Africans was interesting.

And yeah, for gaming, JonTron. I had watched nearly all of his videos up until that point. I unsubscribed to him immediately afterwards.

This is seriously like my last stand.

The Zaibatsu, and Retsupurae are as "pure" LPing as you can get man...

If they go, fuck the whole thing.

Like, I'm fairly sure they're ok. Pat doesn't seem like someone who would believe fucked up things, same with Matt and Woolie. But you never know.

Apparently he toned down a bit in his later years.

H.P. Lovecraft was the first person to call a friend the n-word. His cat was his favorite thing in the world and look at what he named him.

Edit: OMG Negro eggs lmao.
