Regarding the ending there's a theory which has been banded about throughout that years that Travis died in the shootout and the conclusion where he finally gains acceptance from society is a dream....... but the less said about that the better I think!

A lot of 70's and particularly 80's cinema can seem extremely cheesy today if you're not accustomed so don't worry. Taxi Driver after all is rather dated in many respects

There's some confusion here between cringe-inducing and wince-inducing. Cringe-inducing moments for me tend to be extremely embarrassing scenes in films, or when it's just a shit film. Wince-inducing, however, would be any violence towards women in films. In fact I really don't care for it if it's too realistic, such as in The Killer Inside Me. I find it too repulsive.

No this isn't a "Ugh, so bad I cringed" joke, although, yeah... I did have a lot of problems with the movie. That said, one scene was done very well and had be squirming.

Probably my favorite torture scene ever. Just because of how it was directed and not gory at all either. Perfect build up, perfect acting, perfect script and cinematography especially camera work, and perfect song to go with it. It defines cringe inducing without resorting to a bunch of gore.

Nolan clearly gave up on that movie partway through.
