Your most Disappointing game of 2021

1. Metroid Dread - all these years for a new Metroid and they took all of the worst bits of the Gameboy games to build this turd of a game

2. Age of Empires 4 - it's literally just more AoE with slightly better graphics

3. Halo Infinite campaign - it's fine and all, but it feels unfinished, no coop sucked, and the "gameplay loop" of constantly having to pick up new guns just wasn't my thing in the end. I did persevere and finish it though

I disagree, but can understand. I had a lot of fun with the games released this year, but they were kinda niche too (mainly Nier, MH Rise, SMT V and Diablo II)

The general quality of games has gone up since the 360 era. There are a lot of good games this year but it's difficult to point out any that really stood out. Rise is my favorite game of this year but it is little more than an evolution. Two of the games you listed are remakes (both enjoyable). I haven't spent enough time with SMTV yet.

Nothing really disappointed me. I was worried about Halo Infinite, but it turned out to be awesome. Probably my GOTY.

2021 was a fantastic year in gaming!

Resident Evil Village here, utterly disjointed and boring mess
Man, I was feeling so lonely with thinking I was the only one seeing that Village was totally disjointed and with no clear vision. Thread gives me hope. I've seen a considerably amount of people disappointed with it. Let's hope Capcom comes back with an RE corker after this mess of a videogame.

BF 2042..I like the game but it coulda been SO much better. it still has bugs that have been there since early access (that stupid reload glitch). I think they shoulda delayed the game a few months and added everything they wanted in...I miss levoltuion from BF4.

TBH I expected nothing, and got a lot more than I expected.

I didn't feel like I was without a new game for the entire year.

Overall it was actually a pretty good year, by most standards and an exceptional year in covid times.

Not necessarily released in 2021, but played in 2021 and major disappointments:

Deathloop
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
BioShock 2
Insurgency: Sandstorm
Diablo II Resurrected
Death Stranding Director's Cut

the new battlefield, maybe it's gotten better now but it was reminding me of why i liked 1942/3 and now i guess it's not like that

Aside from the no save/suspend point thing I'm gonna have to disagree, the game is punishing but fair and it gives you plenty of upgrades as well as synergies. The economy in that game is insane, in a good way. You have to know how to exploit the parasites, artifacts, and malignancies. The game is awesome.
I really tried to like it, and there are great moments in it. Gameplay is tight, story is intriguing, graphics are also great.

It's the malignant system that I really can't stand; it feels like an unnecessary difficulty addition to an already challenging game in a mechanical aspect. Almost every boon in this game was a permanent Chaos boon from Hades; everything has a negative side effect that can ultimately ruin your run.

Returnal would be good enough with its natural difficulty.

Alan Wake Remastered.

I love Alan Wake, this cash grab is not appropriate for the regard fans have and Remedy claim to have.

Between this, Control Ultimate and GTA, "remaster" needs a new definition: zero effort cash grab.

Battlefield 2042 by country fucking mile.

After first trailer i thought that DICE finally understands what community wants from BF game but boy I was wrong.
That game should have extra year in development. And even that it would be bad because core design decisions are just plain bad and idiotic.

Back 4 Blood

It has its moments but ultimately it just feels like crap on console and had too many issues for me to keep playing. And I was hoping to be playing that game for years to come. It's a massive disappointment.
I agree. They need a fresh approach to the genre that redefines the way that we approach combat in a fundamental level with things like ammo and health completely redefined, as well as creative new methods of killing that allow you to really rip and tear. Movement speed needs to be improved as well and should incorporate verticality as well. Perhaps some tasty jumping puzzles? Finally we need some rpg lite elements incorporated like ammo, health, weapon and ability upgrades.

Deathloop.

I was hype for it, and the morning the reviews dropped and I saw all those 10's I was so hype. I have no idea what those people were playing. Mediocre at absolute best.
Yes, It's indeed very bland.

IDK if it counts but for me it's Darkest Dungeon II, the friendship system and traveling system kinda on rails is not something I really enjoy and it's mandatory. It's a good game but it's still a dissapointment for me, doesn't seem to me to be a step in the right direction for the franchise.

What were some of everyone's most disappointing games of 2021 ?

Disappointing doesn't necessarily have to mean outright bad, it can be something you had high expectations going in and for whatever reason didn't live up to your expectations.

I'll start with mine.

12 Minutes.

I was pretty excited about the game, had been casually following it on and off since 2015 when Giantbomb did their video. YES THIS WAS IN 2015 !!!

The final game was also a bit exciting for adding known talent for the voice acting. But holy shit the release game is such a disappointment. The 'loop' is not fun as you have to do the same tasks over and over again, other loop games like The Forgotten City managed to make the grind a lot less worse in repeated loops. And the game has one of the worst plot twists of all time.

For the interest of those who haven't played it, I won't post it here. But it was one of those "completely takes you out of the game" kind of things.

My wife and I had a lot of fun with this game, but the end ... the story twist ... that was really, really bad. The game really sucked after that.

Another let down was Diablo 2 Resurrected. Well I like Diablo 2 Resurrected and the first few days were good, but than ... the servers .... whenever I had time to play it, I was in a queue waiting until I had no longer time to play.

To many but for me:

1. GTA TRILOGY TDE (you all know, why)
2. GoT PS5 (boring)
3. RE8 (started ok, ended like Doom)

Halo Infinite multiplayer.

6 years to produce a slightly better Splitgate is something I never would have bet on happening in a million years.

It might be Death's Door for me. The game is in no way terrible. I might even go back to it at some point. The gameplay just doesn't do it for me, which is surprising considering the game feels a bit like a spin on Link's Awakening. The upgrade system is really basic which makes progression somewhat unsatisfying.

I don't play a lot of brand new games so there isn't much for me say about 2021. Metroid Dread was a ton of fun and may have even surpassed my expectations. I also really enjoyed WarioWare: Get It Together and found it to be the best WW game since Smooth Moves.

Returnal.

Started up so good then I got rapidly bored at the lack of options the game gives the player for a rogue-like. Really poor build and movility options.

BF2042 This was supposed to be the comeback and it ended up driving nails so much deeper into the coffin lid.

Deathloop. Huge Arkane fanboy and the praise of this game made me realize I still have faith to lose in gaming ""journalism''". The worst thing about it is now Arkane has to invest years into a sequel. RIP. This kills one of my favorite modern game studios.

Scarlet Nexus.

I love JRPGs. I thought I was going to love this. Ended up not liking it. I found it repetitive and boring. I found the conversations tedious. The combat wasn't as fun as I thought it was going to be. You backtracked to the same areas multiple times. And the dungeons were too long. Some were like 2+ hours and the final dungeon was like 3-4 hours. Once you enter the final dungeon to the final boss and credit scenes, it can be well over 4 hours depending on how thoroughly you play.

I don't think it was a bad game, but a lot of people loved it, it got very high scores, and I couldn't wait to be done with it honestly.

12 Minutes. Decent idea executed very poorly, especially in a year where The Forgotten City does it so well.

Kena, it's still beautiful but boy does it feel like an extended tech demo. They need a buyout so the art team can focus full time on that while someone actually builds a modern video game around it.

REM4KE!

Halo Infinite campaign for me. It just feels dull and uninspired. I admit that I have not finished it, but I'm just not excited about it.

I bought Mario Golf with a voucher at launch to play with my friends. The lack of content and too simple mechanics of the game with a horrendous lag in online games made it the most disappointing game of the year for me. The game should have been sold for 25€ tops.

Tied between Far Cry 6 and Resident Evil VIII: Village. Rated both games overall an 8.0/10 which is a great score but I was expecting a 9.0/10 for both so while great in general, disappointing for me personally. Of course, I had some surprises in Outriders, Kena, The Ascent and Biomutant which made up for my two disappointments so all in all, I came out ahead.

I felt like the developer or publisher tried hyping it up by handing out early copies to influences. I didn't bother with it because it just fell off my radar.
A game that achieve perfection in art,but it was completely unplayable at launch due to bugs and poor optimizations

Deathloop - just didn't do anything for me at all. Intend to go back and give it another go, but didn't do much for me.
Metroid Dread - it's not a bad game but having to fight the joycons is now becoming insufferable on the switch and a game which needs you to be a bit more on the ball exasperates the problems meaning i'm playing tied to the tv and not on the go.

Age of Empires 4. I was incredibly hyped for it to the point where I was going to take time off work for it. Then the beta hit and I wasn't very impressed. I kept telling myself the game is just mediocre because it's a beta, but nope.

Ugly graphics, Age of Empires II reboot (with less to do than vanilla AOE II), hardly any factions, limited units, horrible UI. I probably watched the gameplay trailer a dozen times before this and it's just sad that this was the final product. I haven't played since the 3rd day. It's just a cheap game that seems like it'll end up being another Microsoft "service" game rather than a full product.

I would ay BF2042 but that would mean I wasn't thinking in the back of my mind that DICE would drop the ball.

Halo Infinite. 343 are clearly capable of making a good fps, no question, however, they have a lot to learn when it comes to creating an engaging storyline and characters. I didn't even reach the open world before giving up. I was staggered at how Sci Fi channel it all was.

Far Cry 6. It felt cheap, buggy, and bloated. Some aspects don't even make sense like the outfit stat system. I also hit a game breaking bug that won't spawn the highest ranked weapons for purchase. A step down from 5 in almost every way possible... Makes me miss OG CryTek.

Deathloop. It started off so well for me but it grew stale so fast where it became a chore to play. And the menu system is way too cluttered. Shame as it is fun in small chunks.

Resident Evil Village.

As a user said, its just soulless and generic to the death.
Finished just once and deleted it for nevermore

Battlefield 2042 big time. I thought after getting their nose bloodied a little with the reaction to 5 and going back to a modern setting we might get something close to the BF and Bad Company glory days.

Not even close though, what an absolute dud in every aspect. The old DICE is dead and buried, I just need to let go and find a new love.

everything tbh.

not a single game surprised me this year except for death's door.

halo campaign - ass
ratchet and clank - meh
returnal - solid at times, memorable but frustrating with bugs
resident evil village - soulless
deathloop - as someone who liked dishonored, this was pretty bad
forza 5 - fine but i can't play it after playing too much of 4, same exact shit

wtf else was even released?
loool

Ratchet. Looked phenomenal and did a good job showing off the SSD but the gameplay bored me to tears
