Your most hyped game of all time.

Metal Gear Solid V easily was my most hyped game of all time. I tried as hard as I could to go on a complete media blackout, but failed because I had to see the latest trailer or gameplay video. Was I disappointed with the outcome? A little, but when you hype it up so much, your going to be disappointed in some ways. However, I was ultimately happy with the final product and still continue to pop it in and sneak around. I do think it's my favorite game of all time in terms of gameplay and how smooth it runs.

MGS3!

I remember getting every magazine that had coverage of that game just so I could find out everything I possibly could about it. It was such a departure from 1 and 2

I remember how incredibly hyped I was for Starglider 2 back in the day.
I expected like the perfect space game in the vein of Elite.

Unfortunately it was a rather convoluted game with poor gameplay and never lived up to what people expected from it and its graphics.

That's currently Final Fantasy XV for me. Gosh, I want this game so bad... :( The days till it's release stretch like rubber. It seems as if it's never going to be September 30th. If it doesn't deliver after 10 years of waiting and wanting I will be devastated.

The last game I was that badly obsessed with was Xenoblade Chronicles, the original, not the mediocre sequel. ;) I remember me watching and rewatching trailers and browsing for news and previews of the game like a crazy person in the last couple of weeks before it's release. I ditched everything for a whole week and practically locked myself in at home when it finally was released. It did deliver in the end though and became one of my all time favorites. :)

The next immense hype will start for sure when/if Soul Calibur 6 is announced.

Half Life 2
Baldur's Gate 2
Diablo 2

I guess I'm a sucker for sequels but those games had me in a fit. I bought a brand new and really expensive computer for HL2 and went through all kinds of hoops to get a copy of Diablo 2 on release day...

...

After thinking about this some more, the answer is obviously Super Mario 64. I was pretty damn young back then but managed to get a preorder in almost 2 years in advance IIRC.

I don't think there's any game I've ever overhyped myself for. The most recent one I could remember being excited for prior to its release is Alien Isolation, but even then I was keeping myself in check because I was expecting disappointment. Luckily it turned out amazing and it's my favorite game two years running.

My three favorite games of all time - Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, and Doom - were all unknown to me. I did not know about them prior to their release. I purchased them all on the spot when I saw them at GameStop or Walmart. That's amazing to me, because my favorite games were all unknown gems.

The surprise of playing a game without any expectations and being blown away versus playing a game you were expecting to be good is so much better.

Skyrim

Lots of firsts for me with that game:
First time I ever pre-ordered a game (Did it at a store.)
First time I ever visted a video game message board/forum
First time I ever put in for vacation months before hand to play a video game.
First time I watched, in real time, the reactions of people who downloaded the game and were already playing. The jealousy was so real.

I still remember driving to my local grocery store and loading up on everything I would need to eat for the next days. I did this just to pass the time really until GameStop opened and I could get my reserved copy. I remember driving home that morning never looking at the road, reading the back of the game case and all of the material. The wait while the game loaded up on the PS3 was pure agony. For all the hype though, the game did not disappoint.

Mass Effect 3
It didn't deliver but in retrospective it was no way it could have gives consistent experience. My main complaint is that the game teats all races as a unified faction, it basically shatters the series' complexity, it would have required another game. The ending was disappointing even if I liked the dilemma it brings to the table.

I mean who can really disagree with the hype? The reveal trailer left most stupefied and everyone kept coming back for Dojo updates. It was a roller coaster of emotion up until release.

And then there were the reviews. I'll always remember this one:

"It’s clear what Nintendo has done with Brawl. They held a gun to Sakurai’s head and told him that if he didn’t create the best damn game Nintendo has ever seen, they’d be forced to shoot him and his family."

MGS2 before the age of internet, very hard to see that trailer lol

MGS4, bought PS3 with it when it launched haha

I actually didn't know what Legend of Zelda was when I got OoT. My mom would take me to rent games every once in a while and I randomly grabbed it. I was like "holy fuck, what have I discovered?"

Hehe, same here. :) I had heard about it before though. About some green elf called Zelda. XD

Street Fighter II.

The original SF was kind of shit but I really liked it, bought both a C64 and a PCE CD just to play that game. SFII delivered more than I ever could have imagined.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII. I was so looking forward to the Insomnia segment ... What they created from its corpse is probably the biggest gaming-related disappointment in my life and killed a lot of my interest in the brand.

Right now, Breath of the Wild has the most of my attention.

But back in the day, reading up on the upcoming first 3D Zelda game and seeing all the beta screenshots in magazines had me so excited. Seeing the 3D model of AoL Link in a full 3D town reminiscent of AoL had me daydreaming for days on end.

When Ocarina of Time came out, and the closest I got to an incredibly dense explorable town was the Hyrule Castle Town alleyway, I was a little let down.

Now I'm looking at comparisons of Hyrule between LoZ, AoL, and ALttP, realizing just how MASSIVE (lore wise) the land of Hyrule is in AoL, and sticking to my prediction that BotW takes place after AoL (possibly as the same Link) and I'm just flabbergasted at how big BotW is really going to be if it's to include all of AoL/LoZ/ALttP landmarks and then some.

But having said that, I know better than to raise my actual expectations to that bar.

After playing the demo, it was Arkham Asylum in 2009.

Then after playing Arkham Asylum it was Arkham City.

then Arkham Knight.

That's kinda how it was when I first played ALttP. I had just started playing video games again after like a 7 year hiatus, and the main reason I bought ALttP was because I was annoyed that the commercial didn't show the game. One day I wanted a new game but had no idea what, and I ended up buying it just to satisfy my curiosity and find out what kind of game it was. I had no idea there were two previous Zeldas. A couple hours into it I felt like I'd won the lottery. And for a short time I went around with the assumption "I bet there are TONS of awesome games like this and I just don't know about em!"

hmm...

It's either Mortal Kombat II, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Warcraft 3 or WoW. All very, very close.

I'm getting old. :o

That's going a little overboard, no?

I mean, you're definitely entitled to your opinion and heck, we all wanted Versus XIII the way it was intended (I remember reading about the Behemoth being a random event and how they kind of introduced that mechanic back when Andriasang was still around). I also hate that we won't be able to explore Insomnia (at least from what we know, in a main city hub, like Lestallum or Alticia).

Still though... for what Tabata is able to give us (Kingsglaive, 3 games and an anime), it's not as bad as you make it. Just play it (or don't) and move on. I think Tabata did a good job with the time he was given to make the game become an actual reality. I rather play the version we have now than nothing at all.

MGS2 was my answer.

MGSV was next. Goddamn those trailers were the best I've ever seen. Unfortunately it was the whole game. Though I still think the tapes made up for some of that.

Oh Adventure of Link for sure. I had just come off LoZ which was (and maybe still is) the most magical gaming experience of my life, and Nintendo Power was expertly teasing the sequel for what felt like forever. They released maps of the first 3 levels as part of the hype, and I redrew them larger and in detail - all well before the game was even out.

The Last Guardian! This long wait for the game ruined me and I can't control my hype. It's basically keeping me alive.

No Man's Sky

Everything just looks beautiful in that game. And finally something where I can just wonder off and not worry about the constant nagging of missions. I've most definitly have reigned in my hype levels, but I seriously can't wait to play.

Before that..
GTA IV. That was the first GTA I was able to walk into the store and buy. I bought that, then finally got my PS3 two weeks later.

Gothic 3. I was so excited for the game, I literally couldn't sleep the night before it came out.
Then I spent 45 hours getting killed by wild boars, falling through the world and running around without a character modell and eventually lost my save after the game crashed.

Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire. Not Gold&Silver, the internet didn't hype it that much but the year prior to RS release was such a roller coaster ride. Everyday I opened up my computer just to find out what new pokémon revealed that day. Wailmer, Sharpedo, Poochyena...

Fallout: New Vegas

I was so hyped about my favorite developer making a game for my favorite series. It was my first pre-ordered game, and after 1000 hours playing I have no regrets.

Final Fantasy VII. After playing Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy on SNES, I was so hyped for this game that I bought it before even owning a PS1.

Xenoblade X was my most hyped game and while a good game fell short of my expectations. The FFVII remake has now taken its place.

I saw the title of the thread, and before I even opened it, the first game that popped into my mine was Metal Gear Solid 2, with maybe GTA: San Andreas being a close second.

I've been excited about a lot of games, but very few had me so pumped and bouncing off of the walls than MGS2. Maybe Chrono Trigger and Castlevania: SOTN. But yeah, MGS had me crazy hyped.

Nowadays, I've gotten older, so I never get overhyped for things like I used to, but I still get excited for stuff. MGS2 was special though. The excitement, the speculation. I haven't experienced an event like that since.

EverQuest 2. After Playing through EQ1 for years I was so hyped for the sequel. Didn't meet expectations, but I still enjoyed playing the game for years too.

I think the most agonizing wait was Starbound.

Anyway, I still believe that MGS2 was the game I was most hyped for. I waited in front of the store, bought it at 9am, played 16 hours straight and finished it in one sitting.
I've never done this for any other game ever (I did end up finishing it around 34 times, not counting multiple tanker-only runs... I also collected every single dog tag for every difficulty level... I could basically play the game with my eyes closed. All those runs including the ones I did in MGS2: Substance).

Original Shenmue by a mile. Obsessed over that like none other in junior high. Any scraps I could find online or in a print mag prior to release were combed over like a PI trying to find a missing person lol. That first trailer with that classic theme playing that included scenes and places used in II cemented the obsession.

Only thing that has probably come close to that is Half-Life 2. One of the summers prior to release I hung out on a HL forum (.net? name escapes me) and just joked off handily I should try and walk through the door at Valve since I was local and ask for a tour since we were all so bored and starved for any scraps of info we could get. Someone on the board took it upon themselves and got in touch with their receptionist and got me one set up, all I had to do was call. I was shitting myself with anticipation and was floored that Gabe was the one to give me the tour. I was pretty nervous throughout but it was an incredible experience. Of course nowadays tours there are old hat as they're fairly open with visitors but back then it felt pretty special. And no I didn't get a date out of them when I was there :p

I was insanely excited for Star Fox Adventures back in the day.

You can't even begin to imagine my disappointment once I actually finished the game.
