Your most pleasant surprise Switch announcement from the presentation and after

Arms, has good vibes and artstyle, but seems to shallow right now for a full game

Mario Odyssey, for the first time in a very long time a Mario game has given me a sense of wonder instead of feeling like a sterile good gameplay showcase.

The Switch release date itself and Zelda being a launch title, both coming 2 to 3 weeks earlier than I had expected -- Very early March instead of mid/late March.

Edit: And Super Mario Odyssey of course.

Super Mario Odyssey. I wanted a return to 64 style levels, but I didn't expect it.

Followed by ARMS and that clipper game. I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope local multiplayer and coop is a thing with the Switch. I want to have fun with other people in the same meatspace.

Arms, Suda on coke, Xenoblade 2 being so far in development and the console itself looking like a good piece of hardware. As far as Nintendo games, I think they did a great job.
Really, the big problem is the price and the launch line up, because honestly the launch window isn't bad (ARMS, Snipperclips, MK8, Splatoon 2)

1. Not only are we getting a new No More Heroes, but Nintendo put Suda 51 on stage at their console presentation to announce it. That seems crazy to me lol

2. The fact that we are seemingly getting 4 of Nintendo's big guns within the first 8 months. I mean, look: Zelda, Splatoon 2, Mario Oddysey, and Xenoblade 2. The Wii U would have killed for that.

I have yet to fully dive into a Xenoblade game (I've played Xenoblade 3ds only for 6 hours or so), but Xenoblade 2 looked fantastic.

Don't necessarily love the larger emphasis on anime in the artstyle, but the scale and the world looks incredible so far, which is obviously a staple of the series.

Bomberman's announcement was exciting, as I thought it was a dead franchise. Bomberman 64 was the last one I played. This will be amazing with online multiplayer.

The movement control options on the joy-cons and the advanced rumble seemed impressive. I wasn't expecting motion controls at all as an option.

- The Switch release date of 3/3 was earlier than what a lot of retailers listed at 3/17 or around that time.

- Arms was a awesome surprise since I instantly got that "Splatoon's first showing at E3" vibe while watching the gameplay. It is unexpectedly my most wanted Switch game now!

- Snipperclips segment during Treehouse stream literally made me laugh out loud from it's hilarity and charm....I seriously didn't even see it on my radar since it wasn't shown much during the stage event.

- Xenoblade 2 was outta the blue since I didn't expect Monolith to show anything till like E3 2018.

- Suda 51 with No More Heroes 3 though the name hasn't officially been announced yet.

Koizumi playing a large part during the presentation.

He's my favorite game developer and has always been behind the scenes. Glad to see him in the spotlight.

Check out these first hand impressions. It sounds like it has a lot of depth.

I loved this game. Played it tonight at the preview event and then came back around for another go. Left the event tonight dying to play again. Honestly I wish I wouldn't have waited in line for Breath of the Wild so that I could have played more ARMS. BotW was the exact same portion of the game we've been seeing for a while now. Here's a little snippet from a preview that's about to go live for my website:

"The demo build of ARMS had five playable characters, each with his or her own unique characteristics. There's a giant mummy, for example, who heals himself slowly over time while holding the guard position. He's also huge and built like a tank, so he can take quite a beating. Contrast this with a fast and stealthy ninja character, who can disappear and reappear at a moment's notice with special dodges.

Every character has that one ability or one perk that makes them different from the rest, and that ability or perk will heavily influence the way that you formulate your offense or defense. Additionally, every character has three unique types of fists (or gloves) that they can equip on each hand, and each fist has its own properties. One is a straight-up heavy-hitting boxing glove; another one is a revolving turret of sorts that will send out four smaller projectiles in succession; one is a giant wrecking ball that will smash through your enemies smaller attacks on its way to pummel them in the teeth.

Free and fast movement, unique character abilities, multiple fist combinations, parries, grabs, and directional attacks... Do you see now? This isn't just a novelty. ARMS is an intense, high-impact chess match, and it's sure to challenge and delight anyone who loves a complex brawler.

Be that as it may, this is definitely a game that any young kid (or older non-gamer) could jump into and enjoy. I stated that skilled players won't be able to out-flail other skilled players, but if a match between casual players or beginners results in endless flailing and exaggerated leaning, it's still a damn good time. I saw plenty of that while at the preview event, and everyone always had a smile on their faces. The ARMS area was full of concentrated, furrowed brows and resounding laughter, and that's why I'm confident that we're dealing with a big hit when it releases this spring. Keep your eyes on this one, folks, and play it as soon as you get the chance."

Edit: Just noticed I'm a member now. Yay!

The joy-cons: The rumored functionality was one thing, but seeing them demonstrated gave the system a sense of uniqueness and futuristic appeal that caught me by surprise.

Xenoblade 2: Was not expecting to hear of - much less see! - what Monolith was working on until next year.

Zelda:BotW: I knew they would show something, but my body was not ready for how epic it would be. Easily one of the most incredible video game trailers ever!

Snipperclip: This game is freaking creative genuis! Full of charm, and executed brilliantly! Was not expecting that at all. Respect!

Shin Megami Tensei Switch caught me off-guard. I was expecting to see something on the system eventually, but not during their big presentation.

Same knew it'd be for Switch at the very least, but doubted it'd be shown yet. Put it on my bingo card as a joke and it was freaking amazing seeing it. Knew it was SMT the moment I saw the building and the music

This might sound like a troll post but it's 100% genuine:

I am relieved that I don't have to pay $300 for another piece of plastic just so I can get access to Nintendo's handful of good (no, great) games over the next 5 years.

Instead, finally their hardware business is coming to an end and I will be able to enjoy their games on third party hardware sooner.

I would have been pleasantly surprised to see a raft of first party games announced for year one, better visuals than we are getting and a console without terrible gimmicks that nobody wants, and I would have bought into that - but we didn't, so the silver lining is at least this depressing 10 year nightmare of Nintendo home consoles will soon be over.

Cool good luck with that

I was surprised by the versatility of the joycons. I mean, the mexican standoff thing looked a little stupid but developers could do some quirky stuff with that in their games. Never underestimate good rumble. IR cam is nice too.

Biggest surprise was Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Hands down. I fully expected an XCX port all along the other boring up ports when I saw the Monolith logo. But BAM! XC2! Holy moly. With good music to expect. So good.

Followed by Shin Megami Tensei. Perfect, just perfect for Switch. Can say no more.

Zelda having voice acting. Sounds dramatic and good, the game and storytelling may benefit from that!

The launch being on March 3rd. Two weeks early of what I thought! Together with Zelda! Oh yeah! First thing I did when I arrived at work was taking holiday on launch day and monday after that weekend to enjoy all that new console goodness!

The fact that they confirmed gyro controls are still intact in Splatoon 2 was a glimmer of hope that they haven't lost it completely to what was otherwise a trainwreck of a conference. Koizumi was the highlight for me.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - no new tracks, wat
3D Mario - stunning at times but the level design was mediocre
Mario Maker - No touch screen in TV mode and capacitive otherwise means no MM, thanks Kimishima
Xenoblade 2 - Felt too 'steampunk-y' for me, I want to see some of the more organic and exotic environments before I get hyped
Fire Emblem Warriors - I'm interested based on the mindless fun I had with HW but I'm not crazy about the FE universe
Zelda - I'm looking forward to it but the story trailer shown wasn't for me, I'm more into the puzzle solving aspect of the shrines
1 2 Switch - They have no confidence in attracting the casuals so they made a low effort Wario Ware spinoff, mobile is where they will target that audience
Arms - Interesting concept, awful character designs

I'm glad I bought a reserve Wii U because fuck this shit

And Zelda won't be the goat everyone expects it to be; it's Nintendo's first real attempt at a genre they don't really understand. By making an open world game they put themselves in a position where direct comparisons to games like Witcher 3 are possible to make, and that will only show how far behind they are in presentation, graphics and storytelling; by far the most important aspects of a game these days.

While Mario and Zelda really stole the show, I was kind of expecting them to. I was definitely not expecting a new Xenoblade to be announced so soon after XCX...and the fact that they're calling it Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is...just insane! It makes sense as it looks a lot like the first game, and not at all like X, but I imagine a casual observer would've been scratching their head at that.

I like that the Mario game surprised me even though I might have preferred Mario Galaxy 3. But being surprised is nice.

Best thing about this is I get to play Zelda on 3/3 already. Feels really soon.

I want to say Mario Odyssey because I'm shocked we are getting a new Mario modeled after 64/Sunshine, but I expected to see the game at this conference. So I am going to say Xenoblade 2. I hoped we'd see something from Monolith Soft but if we did I was expecting a Switch version of XCX not a brand new game

New translator was awesome, lots of laughs.
Mario looks good.

Besides that it was full of unpleasant surprises. What a joke Nintendo has become.

The things I was most surprised about would be ARMS, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Super Mario Odyssey.

The first 2 were surprised because I honestly wasn't expecting a true XC sequel and arms looks fantastic

As for Mario, the surprise to me was how it's going back to the SM64/SMS era of 3d Mario. I remember from the few seconds we got during the switch reveal trailer, people were 100% adamantly assuming that since they showed snippets of Mario moving directly forward in pseudo-linear scenery that we would be getting another game like 3D world (not a bad thing) instead of "galaxy 3". I think Odyssey can bridge the gap between those two.

Also, since odyssey is about exploring places, I wonder if they will use that as an opportunity to add in a galaxy-like space world/level.

Nothing beats the promise of a Mario 64/Sunshine developed with the full might of the expertise, verve, precision, and boundless creativity that have blessed the 3D Mario series since Galaxy, but that doesn't exactly qualify as a total surprise.

So instead my answer is Arms, which not only renews a commitment to better and more elaborate motion-based design along the evolutionary path that should never have stopped at the scant support for the Wii MotionPlus, but looks to take the essentials of Wii Boxing (always my favourite Wii Sport) on a jump like the one from 8-bit to 16-bit. We are finally seeing the prototypes from the Wii brought to completion.

I was concerned about whether Nintendo would abandon the foundation they had built in further refining the everyday use of motion aiming, but with support for gyros all the way to the new Pro Controller (unlike the Wii U's), I am no longer worried.

Snipperclips, I hope, turns out to be as deep and rich with challenge as it is adorable. Of all the Treehouse demos it was the most joyous to watch.

Suda 51 on stage and pretty much announcing No More Heroes 3

Also Xenoblade 2, didnt expect that lol

These two for me. Disgaea 5 and Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2. Well as the Square RPG (that I can't think of the name of right now). Heh, I guess quite a few things surprised me. Gonna be a fun year for me.

TAIKO DRUM MASTER ON A REGION FREE SYSTEM AGAIN.

Taiko no tatsujin v version is fuckin awesome on Vita. Defo importing the switch game they do.

I have three major things:

1. Super Mario Odyssee gameplay: it looks exactly how I hoped it would, and I absolutely can't wait to play it!
2. The Joycon grip: impressions from the floor have indicated that the grip is very comfortable to use - perhaps more so than the pro controller. This was a pleasant surprise, since I had anticipated having to buy a pro controller for comfortable gaming.
3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: A big budget RPG is always great news, and this has a really nice aesthetic imo that reminisces of the Tales series, one of my favourite series of all time.

Mario looks fantastic. Zelda a launch title. Even if the system might not be perfect, these two games justify a purchase for me this year.
