Do any of these have co-op? Been casually interested in them for a while.

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
Might be a dumb question but did any of the Y's games come out for the NDS? Any plans for the 3DS?

I played Oath and 1-2 so far, I still need to play Origins. I've bought every game at launch just to support more Falcom games getting localized. :)

No plans for 3DS.

There was a subpar port of Ys 1/2 Eternal to the DS, called Legacy of Ys, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you literally have no other options.

Don't hit me but the only one I really liked was the Ark of Naptishm, tried a few of the others but couldn't get into them. Maybe because I really don't like playing those games on handhelds.

And Adol is a really strange name for a hero. I mean really? Adol? Is his last name Hiter?

play Oath on PC, it's the best game.

Also, he's called Adol Christin

Oath and Origin are the only ones I've played so far, but I bought Chronicles since it's 66% off on Steam right now. One of these days I'll get around to playing Seven and Napishtim.

Both that I've played are excellent games though, and of course, dat music.

Started and finished Ys I the other day. The bump system is not bad, personally. I liked it given the age of the game. It was nice to play a short a RPG without all padding to increase hours new RPGs have. I did run into a few situations where I was just clueless on what to do and that damn two headed boss (before Dark Fact) being a nightmare (until I got the Flame Sword).

Super old school game that felt quite arcadey, but it's enjoyable. I'll hopefully start Ys II in he next few days.

Ys Seven dragged on too long and was too verbose. Shame Celceta is apparently the same way. Still buying it day 1, and I don't do that often.

Since everybody's talking about the PC versions of these games again, I was wondering if anybody else had encountered this problem where the screen will randomly go black in Origins and Felghana for a couple of seconds every few minutes. Is this a known issue? Maybe one with a solution?

I never had that problem, the games have been updated several times recently so maybe a new bug slipped in? Or it could be related to this.

Bumping for the PSA!

Also yes, GAF, play this series. It is worth it. Many well articulated posts have spoken for me.

Went ahead and picked up I & II Chronicles+ as I've had the Ys games in my wishlist for a while now and thinking about picking up the rest before the sale ends. Can anyone speak to the quality of the translations?

I love OiF and Origins, I wish so badly that Falcom developed for the 3DS, or that Konami weren't such assholes and let Xseed publish AoN on Steam.

I had no idea this is how your pronounced the titles until now.

"Ease" - of course it makes so much sense, like the Spanish pronunciation of the letter.

Konami has nothing to do with XSEED and Napishtim on Steam, two people involved have already confirmed that. Give it more time, it will almost certainly happen.

More like "Eece." As in fleece. "Ease" is probably close enough, at least it's not "whys."

Easy to tell who pronounces it wrong, they're the same ones who usually type Y's.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana
- A complete reimagining of Ys III, though its connections to the other Ys games are tenuous at best (read: it's one of the most standalone games in the series, story-wise, spoiling nothing and requiring no prior knowledge of the series whatsoever). Considered by many to be the best Ys game, myself included, though its high level of difficulty may make it a little less accessible to gamers who aren't used to challenging games (fortunately, there are 6 difficulty levels to choose from, so you have options to make life easier for yourself!). This would be my recommended starting point, however, as I feel it best represents the series as a whole.

Thanks for the write up! I picked up Ys: The Oath in Felghana because of it.

I would also like to point out that being able to buy games on the Steam app while half asleep in bed is a dangerous thing...

Hmmm... I've experienced this in the Japanese version of Ys I & II Complete PC, and in a very early build of Ys Origin, but never since. I do know that when I experienced it before, my problem arose from using outdated video card drivers, so you might consider updating your drivers and trying again.

I'll see if I can get Sara in here, though, as she'd better be able to suss out the problem.

As the guy who edited all three games, I can! Though it's up to you whether or not you believe me. But I think most of the GAFers on here will vouch for my sincerity. ;)

All three games' scripts were based on fan-translations by Jeff "Deuce" Nussbaum, which were already excellent to begin with -- but in all three cases, a full editing pass was given to these scripts to clean them up before they were used in the final game. Every single line was looked at, and many (possibly even most) were tweaked to improve and naturalize the flow of dialogue, match the voice and intended tone of the speaker and fix up any mistranslations from the Japanese. I'm quite confident in saying that the localizations for all three Ys titles on Steam are the best they can be, as they started with great source material and a great translation and received very thorough editing all around. About my only regret with them is that Ys: The Oath in Felghana's script uses waaaaaay too many ellipses. (What can I say? I was young and foolhardy back then!) ;)

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to finally starting the series proper. BTW, the Maneater lyrics at the beginning of Ys I cracked me up!

Still haven't played Origins yet, although I do own it.

I actually started with 1&2 for the PSP and loved them. Then I played Oath and loved it as well. I got onto Seven and sort of hit a wall. I don't know if it's because of all the swapping of characters but I don't think I like it as much as the other 3 games. I'll have to get back into it soon just to beat it so I can start Origins.

My friend and I played through Ys I for our first time on Monday. He was just going through my Steam and the artwork caught him. I had just bought it from the Summer sale, but only played for about 10 minutes and gave up after three deaths (tip: you are supposed to run to the next town and buy equipment before attacking enemies!!!).

I expected him to stop playing after an hour, suddenly after power grinding ourselves to one-shoting enemies, we were determined to play a little longer.

Put it this way: we started around 8PM and didn't stop until it was 1AM and I had murdered the final boss.

Major tip to beat the final boss:
Just pause the game rapidly to know where the boss will be. He moves like a computer screensaver by bouncing off the walls, just harness the collective hours you've stared at a bouncing screensaver, and you will win!

I can't wait to go through Ys II and pick up the Vita game in September after Monday.

Ys II is like Ys I on steroids. It's still one of my favorite games in the series.

Many seem to hate the "final dungeon" for it, but I love it. And it's one of the rare things that I can agree with Wyrdwad on.

Tom's right: grab Origin and Felghana first, then ease your way into everything else. Origin and Felghana have the best systems available and are more suited for newcomers. Ys 1/2, I'd probably try later instead, just because the systems may not be to everyone's taste.

On a personal front, I like Origin better, just because there are more battle styles to choose from (as in, there are more characters to choose from). As much as I like using Adol, the variety was welcome.

Ys Seven dragged on too long and was too verbose. Shame Celceta is apparently the same way. Still buying it day 1, and I don't do that often.
I feel like I'm in the minority when I say that I felt the same way. Seven felt too much like a departure from the rest of the Ys games to me, that I didn't like it too much. I didn't like the party system, nor did I like how verbose it was at all. I understand that they want to weave deeper narratives into the games, but that's not what Ys is to me at all. Not to mention that Seven's kinda braindead easy when you learn how to Flash Guard all the time. (Seven's the easiest of all the Ys games, really. >.>)

Celceta is indeed similar to Seven with the party system, but it's better-managed. It's not as easy as Seven to break with Flash Guards and Flash Dodges, either, because they're harder to pull off. Celceta just didn't really feel like Ys 4 to me in the end. It feels like a better game than Seven and does a lot of stuff better. But while it takes stuff from Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys, it doesn't really use them to a full extent, I guess? It just feels like they used some bits of Ys 4 and slapped on the Ys 4 trappings to make it seem like a remake of Ys 4 when it really wasn't. It's a better game than Seven, for sure, but when you think about it being Ys 4, it's not.

And... I... uh, have to put myself in the minority yet again to say that I adore the X68000 and PCE (especially the PCE) soundtracks more than the PSP ones (I, II, and Felghana/III). I just love that style more. I have a very soft spot for Ys III PCE's soundtrack, so I found it disappointing that it wasn't in Felghana as an option at all! Haha.

I honestly think chronicles is straight up garbage. I preordered it day 1, and played 2-3 hours of it, and hated everything about it. After coming off of oath I was really dissapointed. Thankfully ys7 is good. I have yet to play origins because I haven't got around to it.

Easy to solve: play on Nightmare (which I guess you already did) and forget Flash Guard exists. I still only know this term from GAF, I don't think I ever used this and I had a lot of fun with the game. It's still pretty easy compared to the others, but it's challenging enough.

Good to know that someone who shares my opinion felt like Celceta is a better game. I haven't played either version of Ys IV to any meaningful extent, so if it feels different that's fine with me. I got Dawn of Ys last year, but due to the combination of emulation issues and the need to cross reference spoken dialogue with a text document, it was kind of a pain to play so I didn't put much time into it. Will definitely give it another shot sometime with the voice acting patch.

I also never used Flash Guarding in Seven (nor do I intend to mess with it in Celceta) and still found it pretty easy, especially those optional bosses. Didn't play Nightmare, but my understanding was that it was just HP and damage scaling which would only make the game more time consuming, rather than improve the difficultly.

I've played a tiny bit of Oath in Felghana before, so I'm not that familiar with the series. Recently just finished Ys Seven.

The game is awfully wordy for a plot that terrible. I especially like how lines the game deems important scroll super slowly and are unskippable. And those lines never have anything interesting to say. Also you have to play a bunch of the game twice. The justification for it is very stupid.

Other than the first few bosses, combat is mindnumbing. Then the final boss comes along and asks for precision that the game in no way has prepared you for. Party members are terrible at everything.

RPG elements boil down to "There are numbers." Would have been nice if I had any decisions to make with regards to character progression. I bought the newest equipment on each town visit because I just happened to have enough money for it. Only used crafting to build the last weapons you can't buy.

So yeah, super impressed and I can't believe I've missed this incredible series for so long.

Nightmare is pretty fair in Ys Seven, even with FG. i don't think it's easy, just right. i wouldn't play the game any lower in difficulty though.

I have no idea what's up with the black screen issue, but it shouldn't be the games at all. I'm pretty sure it's either a driver issue, or that Windows Update problem.

I really wish they had soundtrack bundles with the games on Steam. Falcom plz. ;_;

I know that for Origins the music files are placed in the folders as .ogg files, which play fine on almost all players I know. I have them on my smartphone an listen to them on my drive to work sometimes.
Only thing they don't have is a proper naming, as in titles/songname.
