Zangief in Street Fighter 5. trailer

Seems the cast has been pretty diverse so far but I guess Gief changes all this? Don't get all of this anyways, Capcom clearly stated there's going to be constant dlc characters and they're technically free on top of all that.

People are only taking into annount the latest reveal when complaining I guess.

Birdie, R.Mika and Karen are safe? I've been showing all the trailers to my work friend who plays SF4, grew up on SF2, and claims he played Alpha, and couldn't remember who any of them were (he remembered Nash though).

I was talking with a friend if mine who has been a long time but casual SF fan and I was surprised he remembered who Karin was (Probably because I played her). He was disappointed Charlie was in instead of Guile though, Guile had always been his favorite.

I told him that Charlie plays way different and Guile will probably get added soon and he seemed pretty alright with that. Personally I like Nash more.

I think Street Fighter fanbase is getting there with last 6 reveals.

I'm really glad I didn't read those threads.

Everyone moaning about the reveal. My favourite 3 characters are Urien, Guile and Balrog, but I'm rolling with it.

Giefs a cool dude, just chill. You get out what you put in with SF, you might love this character when you actually play him.

This is a good attitude to have. Admittedly I said I wasn't buying this if Karin wasn't in, but I was pretty Annoyed after she got passed over in every version of SF4 even after that poll she did so well in.

You've failed me Siliconera. I believed in you.

"Games Journalism"

For real though, Zangief has been in every single Street Fighter game since 2, including nearly every single spinoff or crossover game. What made you people think he wouldn't be in the main roster in this one? Blind hope? lmao

He wasn't in Alpha. Also they have made a lot of unorthodox choices with this game and Siliconera had a reliable looking leak until this announcement busted that open.

Fuck sake.

It's delicious, why you hating?

Alex could replace Gief no problem

No, he couldn't. They aren't the same at all. Alex is would be more similar to Mika.

They changed Birdie a lot from Alpha didn't they? Been ages since I used him but I recall wanting to get in and throw.

I get what you're saying though, his inclusion makes a lot of sense presented that way.

They did. His playstyle was all over the place in Alpha, and that's rectified here.

I totally understand people that are disappointed that their characters didn't make it in. But when you say "Should have been Alex/Urien/Yun/Ibuki" whoever over Gief, that wasn't ever going to happen. This choice is obviously about the character that encapsulates the archetype, same as Ryu, same as Dhalsim if he makes it in.

And honestly, I prefer it that way. The game is looking very offense oriented, it's nice to have characters that put up a wall on that playstyle, and I'd prefer they put in THE ARCHETYPES and do new things with new characters rather than shove old archetypes on old characters and just have people say, "Should have been Gief" (see every SC5 thread).

Boooooring. :\ They gotta have Ryu, I'll give them that, and Chun is always welcome. Ken is pretty different this time round. At least make Gief substantially different if you have to add him.

Which you really don't.

did you even watch the trailer?

Huh.

People don't like Gief?

Well, at least Snake Eyes will be happy.

He's not for me, but he looks good. Lots of armor, less mobile than Mika. I don't have a problem with him returning, but I guess I can understand that his trailer doesn't have the wow factor of the others.

I assume he's talking about appearance. If he is then I agree with him. Zangief alone is disappointing but not even changing him a little is just odd. Especially with the other redesigns in this game.

Is it me or does it look like they ported the model from SF4 with minor enhancement?
I think the apparent similarity is due to his lack of clothing (and the physics-based animation thereof) which is where a lot of the game's visual flare comes from.

I'm sure if you put the models side by side and zoomed in close the boost in fidelity would be obvious. This game has stretchy, flexy muscles, for example, whereas sf4 had some issues with the joints of people's bodies looking unnatural and action-figure like.

I don't understand why so many people are calling the roster safe. Half of the cast appeals to SFII-loving "casuals" (i.e., millions of people), but the other half is taking a really big gamble on newcomers and forgotten relics. That's a good balance.

I'd love to see them make SF5 without newcomers, that would probably go over well.

Looks like Urine is next! They saving him for last cause it would kinda confirm the SFV story line.

None of the really iconic characters got changed that much outside of Ken (and really his hair has changed in every game and wearing the gi around the waist is it). Ryu looks like Ryu. Chun looks like Chun. Cammy looks like Cammy...I think most of the changes will be gameplay wise

The SF2 characters don't get changed much because they don't need to be changed much.

You know what you get when you change Ryu? You get every other shoto character ever.

You know what you get when you change Gief? Haggar. Hugo. Every other big grappler.

They don't need overhauls because they are the archetype. What they need is new shit to fit within whatever system is in the present game, and everybody has that.

Can we all take a minute to appreciate that the Air SPD has him PUNCHING you in the face then smashing you head first to the ground.

"Zang-yef wins."

I guess it's another point of contention, like "Roo" is to "Ryu."

It's interesting. Because I assume Disney would have made contact with Capcom to license the use of Zangief so you'd think they'd have used the correct pronunciation.

Yet in Wreck It Ralph he says "Hi, I'm Zangief (Zangeef)". That's how I've pronounce it since 92. Geef for lyf

The only problem that I have with Zangief, is that he hasn't changed from a visual perspective. No change of clothes, he doesn't look physically older, etc.

He is substantially different.

why would he? Not much time has passed since SFIV IIRC. Birdie, Karen all aged because they legit haven't appeared timeline wise since SF1/Alpha

It's inconsistent in Capcom's own games. In X-Men vs. SF the announcer pronounces it "Zan-ge-eff" and in MSH vs. SF the announcer says "Zan-geef". And its the same guy that voices the announcer in both games!
