Zelda Art Thread

For as much as I dont like Zelda (although really liked Wind Waker until the triforce hunt) I gotta say their character designs are amazing. Think they need to work on enemy and environments (latter more than the former)
Would love to see a zelda with the hard black shadows and high contrast colors seen in the Majora Artwork

The characters are fine, in fact they always have been. It's been the world - the atmosphere - that has been lacking since Ocarina of Time. Where did the dense, sprawling forests go? The valleys with long, narrow rope bridges? The castles on a mountain seemingly a million miles away? None of it is there, and never has been.

I'll wait for Skyward Sword before I pass judgement, those huge environments are very expensive and difficult to do in 3D, of course the 2D Zelda games were able to do it. Floating islands sound cool.

I might as well show off my old Zelda art I did several years ago. All based on Majora's Mask

Very nice :)

I also did a Majora's Mask picture a couple years ago in ballpoint. Been meaning to finish it, but I never got around to it:

What I worry about is that the mainstream fanbase doesn't respond to quirky Zelda artstyles. They just want the OoT/TP style put into the HD machine. Maybe Skyward Sword will work because it is just a softer version of TP.

It certainly does seem like the closest they'll get to the more traditional art.

God, the only thing I miss not having had a Nintendo system in the house for years is the Zelda series. I truly truly miss it.

Was thinking about a Zelda game done for a modern day system with modern graphics and that yearning was made even worse.

These hit especially close to home, nostalgia wise.

My favorite part about Zelda threads are the crazy pictures you people sometimes post. This is a very broad thread where you can post Zelda concept art, fan art, or any old random pics you find. You can also discuss anything related to Zelda in here. Some possible topics for discussion:

-What artstyle should Nintendo pursue for future Zelda games? (Give examples)

-What do you think about the look of Skyward Sword?

-What will Zelda games look like on Wii 2, assuming its roughly PS360 power level or higher? (Are there any current games Zelda designers should look at? Last Guardian? God of War 3?)

I'll start it off. This is so cute:

Zelda___The_Windwaker.jpg

a.) The ideal Zelda art style is the one found in Wind Waker. Brilliantly expressive and a full joy to look at even to this day, it is the crowning achievement of 3D Zelda. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.

b.) I think Skyward Sword looks great artistically, although it's kind of got awkward technical problems. It seems real low-tech in places. That said, I'm sure what we saw is only a taste of things and there will be a big improvement by the time it comes out. I LOVE the art style, second only to Wind Waker in 3D Zelda series.

c.) Nintendo marches to the beat of their own drummer - I'm sure it'll be similarly experimental, finding some new direction to reinvigorate the artistic foundation of the series while giving fanboys many more months of debate. Best of all worlds.

BONUS: That Chibi Zelda looks disgusting though.

I'm with you on Skyward Sword, just that the enemies look atrocious. What is this shit?

Link's character model is wonderful though.

Lots of zelda stuff on pixiv (most of it was exaggerated animu style so bleh)

Who's the girl? She looks good. Ganondorf looks cool but sort of like he was auditioning for an X-Men movie. Link looks like a total douche bag in this pic.

A lot of my favorites (namely Katsuya Terada's work) are already in here, but here's a few more from him I haven't seen yet...

I want to see this in cel-shaded form. It would look like an awesome old anime. I want all the items to be visible too. That would be fun.
This is pretty much my favorite art for Zelda. I love the old anime/manga vibe on it. Link looks so serious and reliable as a hero, and he looks like he's out to conquer the world :P

It reminds of Nausicaa for whattever reason.

My ideal cel shaded Zelda that hasn't been tried yet is a form of "deep shading" like found in the Majora's Mask art work. I think that'd look breathtaking.

Could you expand on this? I haven't heard of deep shading before.

It's just a phrase I use for lack of a better term. To my knowledge nobody has really ever tried something -exactly- like it in games.

Notice the harsh blacks of the shading, the gorgeous contrast in darks and lights. And all Majora's Mask art work is similar in tone and style. On Wii 2 I believe they'd easily be able to faithfully recreate such a art style. I think it'd be just jaw dropping.

The closer I can think is MadWorld ... but with colors

Hey Amirox can I post pictures with exposed boobies/nipples if its done by a famous artist? I prefer not to link it.

of Zelda art!?

Let's just link it and put NSFW in the link. I don't want anybody stumbling into that in a Zelda topic :P

No I meant works of another artist who has influenced Zelda art. I'll link it.

Wasn't Killer7 this type of style?

Actually that style of shading is pretty much used in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I've seen it used before and would also love to see something like this with the right artstyle.
