Unused announcer audio in Smash 3DS references missing modes.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.

Often assets that go unused in games can still be found kicking around in the code somewhere, and it seems that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is no exception.

Audio has been discovered of the announcer declaring a number of modes and features that are not present in the final version. Many of them were present in previous games in the series, but not in the portable iteration. The unused audio is as follows:

Boss Battle
Tourney (Tournament)
Yellow Team
Event Match
Grab the Coins
Special Smash
The Champion Is
8 Player Smash
Choose a Mii

It's certainly interesting to see that these modes must at one point have been at least considered for the final game, and an encouraging sign for the features that may possibly be present in the upcoming Wii U version.

Hear the audio here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=hTaS492JXgg

Those audio files are WiiU modes. They're in the 3DS version because when you use you the 3DS as a controller for the WiiU game, certain soundbites come through the handheld.

BELIEVE.

This does make the most sense

Edit: also 8 player smash would be great for 4 humans and 4 amiibo allies

Why would anyone use the 3DS as a controller?

Because they're kids that have only ever played the 3DS version, so when they go to their buddies house that has a WiiU, they'll just use the controls they're used to.

Because they don't have enough controllers.

Because they want to do 8 player Smash and don't have a gamecube adapter.

Lots of reasons, I'll never use it but it's nice to have as an option.

This makes the most sense tbh. 8 player Smash doesn't seem remotely possible to even consider for the 3DS.

Why would anyone use the 3DS as a controller?

Because it might be a way to get to 8 players on the Wii U version. Gamepad + up to 4 wii motes + up to 4 GC controls + up to X 3DSs?

Also, I guess in case someone's been playing Smash 3DS so much they're used to the controls now… In any case, more options are always a good thing.

There are indeed texture leaks pointing to 8 players in the 3DS version.

Would you need the 3DS version of the game to be able to use the 3DS as a controller though? Wouldn't the WiiU be able to pass that stuff through to the 3DS rather than reading it from in-game files? Does the game have to be running for that sort of thing?

So you need the 3DS GAME also to connect to the WiiU Smash? Why not use the download play feature of the 3ds for this thing?

Makes sense. 8-player Smash locally would probably required either a GameCube adapter or 3DS.

I am sure there were lots of stuff they had to pull, due to the fact they were trying to make the WiiU version of the game match.

I heard someone say that 8 Player Smash was probably a re-name of some 8 person tournament mode that was in Brawl. That seems like a stretch to me.

The Wii U can already support 5 controllers. Couple that with the GC adapter and 3DS controller capability, and 8 player Smash could certainly be a thing.

Would also help explain certian enormous stages like Palutena's Temple.

We don't know that it can't connect with a 3DS that doesn't have the game. It'd just be faster if the 3DS already has the game so everyone doesn't have to wait for the software to transfer to the 3DS.

Oh wow, 8-player smash would be insane. It would also explain why each character got atleast 8 colour swaps.

Now I'm really hoping the WiiU has this 8-player mode since my regular group of Smash players is 5 people. No more rotation battles!

You guys are nuts if you think that there will be any important DLC for this game. The first patch is something that also happened with Mario Kart 7, for example, but nothing else.

Hell, we will be lucky if they fix the online.

Isn't Mario kart getting a lot of dlc though....?

There's a "Connect to WiiU" option in the 3DS game that says it's function is to transfer custom characters and to use the 3DS as a WiiU controller. It's already a feature in the game.

Interesting stuff, but it's always a shame to discover removed content :(

This is actually one of game devs (as a whole entity) biggest PR fuckups, they've convinced the world that more content is always better but devs themselves will always tell you that the vast majority of cut content is cut because it wasn't good enough, not because they couldn't do it.

Not saying that's the case here because there is always stuff you really want to do but you've just run out of time, but that stuff is usually the exception not the rule.

OP, the source has a bunch more audio clips that you're missing like "Smash World", "Official Tourney", "Special Orders", "Master Orders", "Crazy Orders", "Ticket Selection", "Amiibo" (unused for now), "Red Team", "Blue Team", "Green Team" and "Jackpot!" (Jackpot might be used in 3DS but I haven't heard it yet in-game)

Yes.

Probably related how download play usualy don''t work well with lots of options at the same time (see the lack of fighters in SF4 and Kirby FIghters) ... or related how 3ds squeezes every last drop of 3DS ram
