For games that support XMB screenshots, how exactly does it work, i.e. how do you actually take the screenshot? Is there a new icon for that function in the XMB?

Yea some games have you take the picture from the xmb. Press the playstation button, then go to the photo menu and it should be the first option/icon. Some games have the feature in it's own user interface. Either press pause and select photo mode, or maybe they allow you to use the print/screen button on the keyboard (resistance 1 multiplayer).

btw. you have to force the 1080p mode in this game, so you would assume it just upscales the 720p game. But I made screenshots in both modes and it actually saves a lot more details in the 1080p shot so the game renders in a higher resolution (I wonder why you have to force it with a 1080p HDTV then?)

I made a little comparison:
It took both raw .png and upscaled the 1280x720 one to 1920x1080 with my pc to get the same size. Then I cut out the same area (btw. the the screenshots are identical, same camera position etc. due to the fixed positions in gameplay/baseball) and resized both pics 300%.

don't know if the 720p looks softer due to AA or if my resizing process added that.

My point is, the PS3 screenshot function could be used for some interesting&easy/accessible 720p/1080p comparisons.

Works with the demo, too btw.
I think this is the first game that restricts the XMB screenshot feature to a specific part of the game (replays and only after you finished the race), so that's possible for developers, too.

btw:
I made another comparison using the XMB screenshot feature. I knew Ghostbusters has a sub 720p resolution, so it obviously shouldn't have a higher resolution in 1080p mode.
Basically I chose it as the negative control:

no visible difference, so the resizing of the 720p screenshot with a PC doesn't really affect the comparison. Nice way to play Digital Foundry if you're not sure if you should play a game in 720p or 1080p / how big the difference is ^^

the positive control with a quite big difference would be MLB:

Cool idea for a thread.

Are there not some PSP games that have the function as well? I know that the XMB hacks have made it possible but I thought there were also games that let you export a pic. (Metal Gear PW demo is only wallpapers, right?)

(It's too bad that Sony didn't think of making this and Youtube export a native part of the OS. I think it helps their games catch interest when there's an easy way to blog about your game sessions or post up speed runs of your trophy accomplishments or do machinima. Maybe PS4 will be the one of theirs to fully realize the potential of multitasking hardware.)

EyePet has the videorecording&exporting feature (but no option to upload them to youtube ingame), other than that I can't think of more disc/"full" PS3 games.

btw (xmb) screenshots in mp/coop games are quite nice because you can later send them to your partner/opponent via PSN mail, the last screenshot is actually from my buddy's perspective.
Though you have to quit the game to be able to attach pictures to a PSN mail.

I was kinda surprised to see this game supporting XMB screenshots (also custom XMB music) *shrug*




and something for the "Other" category:

my buddy visited me recently and brought Buzz along. We noticed having a webcam hooked up to the PS3 lets the game automatically take photos of you (sometimes w/o warning... :lol ).
Later, you can export them to your PS3 HDD.


Buzz! - Quiz TV:

note that this is via the PSEye camera but the quality is bad/grainy due to the very bad lighting at that time.


I guess this should be work with Buzz!: Quiz World as well.
Also, going by the Singstar Viewer app the Singstar games can make photos of you as well but I don't know it also supports the export-to-HDD-feature.

Heavy Rain supports XMB photos, at least in the pre-release version. It doesn't pause and you can't keep holding buttons while you do it, so actions are hard to capture.

All that is left to post is GoW 3 and Journey you got the 4 best looking games on console right there.

Sucks that they didn't fully implement that screenshot feature.
