Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2016 (Feb 15 - Feb 21)

Regarding Hardware, I was wondering if from next week, last year sales could be from the same year week. I mean, now you're comparing week 7 2016 with week 8 2015 (and YTD the same). I think that was good during the month of January because drops matched better. But once the post holiday season is over I find fairer to compare it with the same number of week. Now it seems unbalanced.
You could add Week 53 sales the last week of December.

This type of comparison is the best and is what Media Create does too. There is only one day difference at the compared weeks.

Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2016 (Feb 15 - Feb 21)
to
Media Create Sales: Week 8, 2015 (Feb 16 - Feb 22)

If I used the old method it would be

Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2016 (Feb 15 - Feb 21)
to
Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2015 (Feb 09 - Feb 15)

except that there would be different compared weeks at some years between Media Create and Famitsu since they track year differently.

YTD is my "complaint", adding one extra week on year 2015 makes the comparison unbalanced. Why don't you add week 1 of 2015 the last week of the year in that case?

They might minimize efforts in promoting the game but it's still a weird decision given Joker 3 sales potential. Priorities might have shifted but DQXI is being released on 3DS too and DQVIII was still the best-selling DQ game in Japan among the recent ones (also thanks to advertisement).
This is the combination that seemed most odd to me honestly.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light passed 15 million downloads back in August and was the 9th highest grossing mobile game in Japan across both iOS and Android in January 2016.

The two obvious options would be:

1.) Push related products to the high heavens because the brand is astronomically huge now and Yokai Watch showed the potential of doing so to boot.

2.) Don't even bother making a game because the mobile product has pretty much got things covered.

They instead seem to have went with 3.) Make the product and put in as little effort as possible as if it were a fading brand you're trying to cash in on one last time.

It's a notably confusing decision to me unless this has been in development for the greater part of forever and they decided what they had really wanted to do was 2.

I am puzzled about DQMJ3 as well. This loks like a Konami-grade move from S-E...
No matter how I try to slice it, I don't understand how you can either botch or downplay such a game.

In the end when CY ends the final YTD comparison will be between 53 weeks of 2015 and 52 weeks of 2016.
___

No Z and new generation (with price drop) means 3DS will likely outsell PS2 from this year.

.

I know that, my point is that to make a fairer comparison, YTD vs last year YTD weekly should be the same number of weeks. The extra week of 2015 could be added later at the end of the year. But week by week I find it better to remove week 1 2015 or just align the weeks.

If Gen VII is actually coming out this year then Gen VI was a complete disaster and GameFreak really didn't knew what they were doing.

Though, if there are Gen VII games it'll be interesting on how they perform with Yokai Watch 3

Depending on when Pokémon comes out it can sell somewhere between 3 and 4 million units which usually should be enough to be the best selling game of the year, though with Yokai Watch 3 likely coming months before it, and now possibly much larger it may not be the case.

A new main entry on Pokémon, Yokai Watch, Final Fantasy, possibly Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter on the same year.

And only one can outsell them all.

I'm of the opinion that this is a multi-region mash-up for the anniversary. Like the super bowl commercial was a mash up of nostalgia and references.

Looks like a lot of 3DS games are coming out of the wood work, and now I wonder if the NX handheld won't be much further away than we/I initially thought. I think I can safely say, now, that I was also very wrong with Stories being cross-gen. I think we're going to see the 3DS chugging along into 2017 and the NX transition coming later.

Seems like WiiU is the first to go as it has... no schedule.

With Pokemon this year as well as YW3, I don't think there's much of a chance for the 3DS to be outsold this year either (to reference to an earlier discussion).

I think if and when the shortage ends the wii U won't make up many of the lost sales. Seems the PS4 could catch up sooner than expected.

PSVita version of Kamen Rider is sold out in Rakuten. It didn't enter the top mostly because of that. I guess the sellthrough will be high.
Megaman Legacy is expected to sell during the weekend.

I think the big problem with waiting so long to replace 3DS is its hardware sales are already comatose outside of Japan. Waiting any longer and the dedicated handheld market will be even smaller than it is now.

DS >3DS will have lost Nintendo about 90million by the end of the gen, so it will be interesting to see if they can increase their userbase with the next handheld if such a thing is even possible at all now that everyone has a smartphone.

I honestly can't see them increasing their userbase with dedicated gaming handheld becoming more and more irrelevant outside Japan

??? People said that for the Wii U too. The only thing that is "no brainer" when talking about a third-party game is that it won't come on a Nintendo system before at least 3 years in and some cash.
Especially in minecraft case since it is more a Microsoft first-party game now.

And it is selling quite well on Wii U, I think it can do great on a handheld/ new console since it shows no signs in japan of fading popularity, even on bad selling systems.

Pokemon is a big enough "event" to sustain the hardware for a year more (over the holidays) which may be why we're hearing rumblings of a WiiU replacement coming first as it has nothing left in the stables. Pokemon would keep the 3DS afloat worldwide (while YW3, MHStories and others will work in Japan), give it one more goodish holiday, and then we'll see a 3DS-timed replacement in early new year 2017. It won't be breaking records but it will sell a lot of software and move a good few units.

The bigger problem that the system has faced has simply been a dirge of compelling software post 2013. Its had very few big titles, the most recent being MH4U in the west... a year ago with N3DS.

Nintendo's goal going forward will be stability and brand growth, not trying to regain the DS lost ground (that ship has sailed, though it does align with their mobile efforts). We have no idea how a good, well implemented handheld hardware will do in the modern age. All we have as references are a pre-mobile handheld and a handheld that took two bullets to the back as it walked out the door.

I don't think Raiden V would've done much better on other consoles.

Rakuten Daily Chart (2016.02.25)
08./00. [PSV] Yuusha Shisu. <RPG> (Nippon Ichi Software)

I was going to say that Rakuten continues its run of being a bizarre retailer after last week's surprise charting of Atelier Shallie in pre-orders and now Kamen Rider Vita missing at all from this chart, but I guess this:

PSVita version of Kamen Rider is sold out in Rakuten. It didn't enter the top mostly because of that. I guess the sellthrough will be high.
Megaman Legacy is expected to sell during the weekend.

Explains it. Undershipped then?

Hero Must Die charting on anything is a surprise to me. It did nothing on COMG; has done nothing on Amazon and seems destined to bomb, sadly.

Can anyone post the full Famitsu monthly top 30? Unfortunately, this time I can't even check it from BriBri's other blog, since it's not working anymore.

So according to Dengeki...

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics: 44k (80% sell-through)
Mario & Sonic at London 2012 Olympics: 45k FW, 267k LTD.

***

Also... Terraria demo coming on March 30th in Japan (April 21st for the full game).

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 campaign at Amazon (vote for the monster you'd like to ride, pre-order, get a bonus item). Also, demo is still coming in Early March, so I presume that's when we'll see a trailer.

I'm afraid not. They had an announcement this week (the demo can net you an item in DQX via the 3DS app), but they didn't give any date. Since they said Early March, and demos are very often released on Wednesday (usual eShop update day), it's either March 2nd or 9th. My money is on March 9th, since that's two weeks before release, and when pre-loading for the game will most likely go live (it's generally two weeks before release).

Also, new TV Commercial for Yo-kai Sangokushi.

If they release the demo and the first trailer two weeks before the game's launch (lol), and the word of mouth from the demo is good, I can see pre-orders rising sharply by then. Implying that will be stock problems at launch because last time orders from shops won't be on time for producing more units.

If that happens quote me.

I am puzzled about DQMJ3 as well. This loks like a Konami-grade move from S-E...
No matter how I try to slice it, I don't understand how you can either botch or downplay such a game.

The suggested reasons behind their decisions also brought me "Konami-esque"-logic in mind. I think that the games they are bringing to PS systems that all have been marketed quite well in my opinion, do a good job at creating awareness and a userbase. Really don´t see any substantial benefit to deliberately "hide" a consistent million seller IP like DQM for the suggested scenarios and let´s be real even a complete blackout/cancellation wouldn´t generate a comparable DQ userbase that sustains multi-million sellers on PS4 in Japan.

Let´s assume building a userbase for DQXI on PS4 is in fact one of the main reasons, then wouldn´t PS3 versions and in DQH2 case also a PSV version on top of the other two work somewhat against this "masterplan"?

Usually top-sellers always get relatively big marketing pushes. The thing is that while DQJ3 will be profitable regardless, now ther is a risk of further decline, in light of an upcoming 3DS version of DQ11 it´s quite surprising that they are willing to risk a degeneration of their existing mindshare, instead of trying to cover all bases. Because Level5 with Youkai Watch 3 and Capcom with MHStories seem willing to pick up the slack. At this point it´s really no surprise that Level5 literally outclasses SQEX in Japan retail sales performance for years if this is really the mindset behind their decisions.

I don't even get the logic with Raiden V, but I guess console shmups in Japan have been intentionally dooming themselves for a long while now.

m$ japan funded the project, also the game includes a specific feature from XBLA (dont know how to explain it, think as "like" in Facebook)

I think I can already quote you, ha ha.

Seriously, the game was playable at the Jump Festa in December. But I havent seen any impressions (not good or bad), so not sure how the demo was received then.

The demo will definitely boost pre-orders, so I hope Squeenix release it early enough so that retailers aren't left with nothing at launch. Didn't someone posted this week that a big retailer was pushing for pre-orders because they had almost ran of "pre-order copies" (not the right term, I know).

I was going to say that Rakuten continues its run of being a bizarre retailer after last week's surprise charting of Atelier Shallie in pre-orders and now Kamen Rider Vita missing at all from this chart, but I guess this:

Explains it. Undershipped then?

Hero Must Die charting on anything is a surprise to me. It did nothing on COMG; has done nothing on Amazon and seems destined to bomb, sadly.

Haha, it continues being that bizarre. According to the figure shared by Hiska, the three versions sold more than the 60%. I expected to know exactly how much each version, but as you said maybe the PSVita version was undershipped. Maybe in some hours I could confirm that from other sources.

Hero Must Die is quite the surprise also that Hyakka Hyakurou. If the reports are correct the Nippon Ichi game at least has sold 7k on its first day, so it could enter the MC Top 20 I guess.

Are we expecting this new Pokemon today to be crossplatform between 3DS and NX? EDIT: Got my answer, no crossgen for this one.

Ah, thanks for the elaboration! That's too bad.

Well the usual blog poster hinted the shortage of WiiU would continue. He stated "maybe next fiscal year.."
He also posted a joke picture showing game store manager committing suicide bomb attack to Nintendo HQ lol
