Released on Tuesday, ‘Halo: Reach’ towers above the competition at the top of the Entertainment Software Chart, giving Microsoft their biggest ever launch week and the 5th biggest launch ever in the UK.

‘Halo: Reach’s debut week sits behind ‘Modern Warfare 2’ on Xbox 360 and PS3, ‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ on PS2 and ‘GTA IV’ on Xbox 360. ‘Halo: Reach’ improves on ‘Halo 3’s launch week by 20,000 sales and is almost 200,000 sales ahead of the launch week of ‘Halo 3: ODST’. Sony’s top selling Playstation Move game ‘Sports Champions’ is a new entry at No2 with last week’s No1, ‘Mafia II’ (-47%) slipping to No3. The only other new PS3 Move titles to break into the Top 40 are Sony’s ‘Start the Party!’ at No29 and Ubisoft’s ‘Racket Sports’ at No32. However, there are several other titles with PS3 Move gameplay that feature in the Top 40: ‘Toy Story 3’ at No4, ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11’ at No9, ‘R.U.S.E’ at No11 and ‘Resident Evil: Gold Edition’ at No22.

Out of these only the PS3 version of Tiger Woods manages an uplift in sales, the PS3 version up 41% on last week, helping push it back into the Top 10 from No17. Ubisoft has 3 games in the Top 10 this week: ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ (-11%) up from No9 to No5, ‘Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. 2’ (-42%) down from No2 to No6 and ‘Just Dance’ (this week’s only Wii-exclusive in the Top 10), up from No11 to No8 (-9%). The only other new entry this week is EA’s ‘NHL 11’ at No26.

Hard to call it a great start really, Mafia 2 is probably pretty low so SC could basically be anything.

it is a great start, as it has great word of mouth and it can go further... it is not your typical game that drops 50% week on week and dissapears after 4-5 weeks.

Yep. I'm really curious though. I want Move to succeed, I'm having a blast with it and would like to see more future games have the option to use it.

But with Mafia II being down 47% from last week (if I read that right) it means SC could be anywhere.

I don't know about that. Those first week sales are associated with the launch of a new bit of hardware... I'd be surprised if it can do 50% of its week one sales in week two.

Should probably remain in the top 10 though, mostly by virtue of the fact that there's nothing of note out this week.

One can only hope, bit premature to assume either way.

Move related sales this week are probably 95% pre-order & the DAY ONE Sony crowd jumping on the new tech and 5% people picking it up after seeing adverts and in store action.

I can see a drop next week for the Sports title (in sales) and then a lovely build up over christmas. Could even be a contender for Xmas number 1 with the vibes I've seen off people in stores. Didn't see anyone buy the console explicitly for the Move stuff, but who would do that in late September - that's a December purchase for families. Personally it's not for me to own, but I can't wait to have a go and may buy it as Xmas gifts for others.

Halo Reach did slightly more copies than it's closest predecessor did 3 years ago with all the extra users available - that means that it's tie ratio to the user base is lower. Couple this with the great word of mouth and the number of users out there that don't yet have it and I think this could also sell well up to the end of the year. I'm loving it so glad to see it do well, it could sell 10% of what it sold this week and still get number 1. As pointed out by others due to all the versions and consoles attached the market value of Halo:Reach was more than that of the entire market last week.

Next week sees some heavy pre-order titles too. The F1 game could knock Halo off the top quite easily with it's 85%+ reviews and English people (who choose to live abroad) doing well in the title race. Dead Rising 2 is also a dead cert to do well, although I expect 3/4 of sales on 360. Civ 5 PC next week too - but I can't handle that kind of addiction at my age.

I have a few friends that are just waiting for their first few exams to pass before they buy Reach. It will be interesting to see how CoD does in November compared to WaW.

It would be something if Sports champ becomes an evergreen title. We just have to wait and see.
I loved the halo adverts on tele. saw the move adverts online but they were the rubbish the game is just the start.

Not bad for Halo Reach, although only selling an extra 20k copies to significantly larger userbase is quite a concern; was there some sort of backlash after Halo 3? I'm surprised by the SC numbers as well. I really expected the Move controller to be dead in the water at first, but it looks like it could reach it's 3 million sales goal.

I'm expecting a similar situation to Bayonetta with DR2. Incidentally, have Capcom even showed any PS3 footage since that short (awful) clip about 3 months ago?
This F1 game is the first of its kind for more than 3 years; I expect sales to be biased towards the PS3 simply because that was what the last F1 game was available on.

Kind of surprised that Sports Champion did so well (comparatively at least).

Just Dance 2 will destroy everything in the UK.

I know this is applicable every week, but the legs on Super Mario Galaxy 2 are bananas. Really happy with how that game is doing here.

I don't think it's much of a concern personally Halo's audience are present at the start of the console's life so anyone else jumping on are most likely for other reasons. It's that reason that both kept the Xbox alive for so long and ultimately killed it. This time around the console seem to have other subdivisions I just think Halo's not really bringing a whole lot of new people to the group.

I just think a non numbered Halo game doesn't automatically get everyone on board.

PS3 being the F1 lead format in sales should be a dead cert, PC should do ok -wait- they are doing PC pre-orders and then digital distro only, PC should enter reasonably and then drop like a rock.

I'll get on 360 once this first wave of Winter Term work (and games) are out of the way.

Good to see Dragon Quest hanging on and actually moving up in position. Sports Champions is kind of surprising, on the other hand.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and it sold the best of any entry in the series.

Wow Just Dance will not die

Sales numbers or not, is DQIX now considered a success? It seems to be hanging on from week to week

Sales age just a couple week ago claimed that Halo franchise is on (rapid) decline and Reach would post smaller numbers than H3. Now selling similar to it is considered a disappointment?

Of course Reach doesn't have the attach ratio Halo 3 had at launch. But that was quite crazy at the time (don't have UK numbers, but in the US it was about 50% after week of sales) and Reach having smaller attach ratio is not "quite concerning", it's a natural state of things. Otherwise we might just as well say that all game franchises are quite doomed.

Point was more that to the casual observer that no number & no Master Chief = side game like ODST & Wars.

It isn't though and word of mouth and the sheer proportion of my friends list playing it should mean that it sells to a large proportion of the user base.

Don't get me wrong - it sold well & better than a lot of people expected, but it sold to a smaller propn of the installed user base than previously so I was exploring the reasons to why. My guess is that some waited to see what the others thought.

09 (__) [NDS] New Super Mario Bros.
10 (__) [NDS] Pokemon Heartgold

I have no idea why Sports Champion is completely absent from the German charts. That's very unusal for such a Sony/Casual-friendly country.
Kingdom Hearts is gone, too, and I assume there is a new DQIX ad campaign explaining the rise.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
2 months after release DQ9 is still in the Top 5 - nice job germany :D

Indeed, that can't be true - honestly, I thought it could would rival Reach in Germany and I expect it to outsell Halo next week. No way in hell it sold less than NHL11 (on 360 no less).
