Waait a second, HBAO is BC2's SSAO right?

I didn't get any performance boost at all by disabling it. 80+ fps all the time though.
Yea, it's BC2's SSAO

I'm just glad I can turn that shit off.

On another note, just tried BC2 again despite hating the game with a passion ... Oh god, it's so much worse than I remember. The white that just covers everything, can't see past 200m and it goes completely white. Turning off bloom doesn't really solve that, seems to be some sort of crappy effect. Oh and the hit detection, GOD! Found a server with an 11 ping close to me, took my M107 and fuck me, I saw blood sprays from people I hit running and no kills, not even a hit marker.

Give me BF3, now please :(
I've never had a problem with BC2 and I loved it....
That was until BF3 alpha. I seriously cant play it at all. I've never had a game actually ruin another game for me. There's just no going back. I laugh at the thought of attempting to play BC2 after playing BF3. I deleted it after trying to play it 3 times after BF3.

Edit: Got dammit! The beta needs to hurry up and get here already! I havent been this excited/fanatic for a game since Metal Gear Solid 2. I'm chking Demize's twitter every day for every bit of info he throws out, checking this thread, looking on youtube in hope of new GC videos, chking EA forums. I'm going crazy here.

One thing I'm really digging . . . Flying into the sun to blind your pursuers vision. This is a real world tactic, and I like it!

It is? Wouldn't the helmet visor and shades negate that?

The bloom is a mess, but BF3 has contrast issues of it's own :(

Holy fuck, lots of lulz will be had! Imagine a squad of noob snipers on it. Hah.

There's always great satisfaction in sniping someone down from a high place they really shouldn't be. Always gave me a good chuckle in BC2.

Go prone next to them and shove them all off. Then watch as they fall, figure out what the hell is going on, and parachute too late.

I'm going to take my little buggy and drive right up to the foot of the tower and put all my C4 on it on one side to see what happens. Nothing is more satisfying than killing a bunch of snipers in spots that they think is safe.

Hell, just like the alpha on the last set of MCOMM stations. Those apartment buildings are always packed with people trying to snipe out the windows so I switch to the engineer class and fire rockets at them as soon as I get outside. It feels so awesome to see the building get blown to bits and kill the people inside while exposing anyone that managed to survive up there.

That last section on that map was my favorite although I only saw it 5 times.

Bullet drop on all weapons? That's huge news, very excited to hear that. It always felt weird having to compensate at range with a scoped sniper rifle, miss and get a body shot, only to pull out your secondary and use it like a hitscan weapon to finish them off.

All modes on all maps is even more awesome, this is sounding better every day!
There always was equal bullet drop on the small arms
They simply had no scope to observe the bullet drop, the scope magnifies the target as well as the apparent drop

I REALLY like how there are no more GLOWING ORBS OF YELLOW PLASMA aka tracers to help you judge bullet drop now. I DONT like how much drop they gave to the sniper rifles, I had the Ballistic scope on the alpha and thought I was OVERSHOOTING a guy's head, then I noticed the bullet hitting the ground IN FRONT OF HIM, and this was at a short range compared to bc2, maybe 200m at MAX
I guess it's a way to limit the distance you can snipe, the Scope can only adjust for so much now, unlike in bc2 where the bullet dissipated before you got 3/4's of the way down the mildots/chevrons.

You can't turn off bloom iirc. You could in the beta/demo but they patched it out.

WAT????? Seriously? ô_O

How is Dice even going to balance that?

Edit> was it a Gamescom "for demo purpose only" setting?
Fighters don't have bombs. Far less effective at attacking ground targets. Attack planes are much slower but have superior ground attack capabilities.

Based on my personal Battlefield 2 experience this is game breaking news... I didn't think it was possible but it seems worse than BF2 to me. It's time for me to leave the hype train then :/
Seriously?

Stallion Free said:
No, based on what someone actually said after playing the game at Gamescom.
Yes, because we're trusting random people at Gamescom over what DICE actually says. Jets are faster than in BF2.

You can. Also, with a little .ini tweaking you can tweak brightness/contrast/etc. and pretty much remove the "overblown" effect completely.

I still wish the F-18 had a few dumb bombs like a Mk.82 that's not too big but decent enough to give some ground support to teammates in need. The A-10 will be awesome for ground support if it's done right and has a decent loadout, but the A-10 isn't always going to be in the air so I'd like to still help out if possible. It won't be a problem if the guns work out alright against infantry. I can't even imagine how fun the A-10 will be in that aspect.

I guess the helicopters are going to be supporting the ground forces. As long as there's a decent amount of vehicles then it's fine. It's probably just BC2 and BF:p4F clouding my fond memories...lol.

The A-10 will at least have a few A/A missiles right? It has to have a few I imagine. Also, didn't some place say the choppers have some short range A/A missiles now too? That's awesome for immediate danger where you just need the enemy to bug out. We had it for our mod in BF2 and a few others did as well and they worked out alright with no major balance issues.

I wish I could install BF2 again without getting a screwed up installation. :(

There are definitely hellfires on the choppers. I didn't see anything but that an the nose cannon in the trailer, though. They might have an air-to-air missile or two.

I figured as much about the rockets and hellfires but I can't remember where I heard that they had some A/A missiles as well.

As long as the A-10 has some A/A missiles to defend itself from the fighter jets, I'll be happy. Teammates are sketchy enough as is without needing them to save your ass in their fighters every two seconds.

Wow... BF3 looks so incredible.

Kind of reminds me of when I messed around with 1942 a bit. I might jump in if I see a good deal.

I doubt it.

The A-10's A/A capacity is likely to be guns.

In real life they are sometimes equipped with sidewinders to take out helicopters, so I'm guessing we might see that in the game, but I would think that giving them AA would make them OP if they're extra armoured...

Although perhaps they're weak against other aircraft...

Maybe the A-10 is really hard to take down using mobile AA/static AA and Jet/helo AA missiles are better to take it out?

Updated weapon/customization list. Demize is chock full of info. Confirmed that squad spec's do not stack and that Battle Rifles are for Recon.

Oh yeah, Kotaku has impressions: http://kotaku.com/5832822/battlefield-3s-multiplayer-blows-128-socks-clean-off

Battlefield 3's booth at Gamescom was not fucking around. Inside its cavernous hall, at the end of an hours-long wait, were 64 personal computers and an 18-minute round of the game's multiplayer.

It's quite the experience.
Taking place on the game's Caspian Border map, an enormous expanse of creeks, hills, plains and buildings, the demo throws 32 American soldiers against 32 Russians in a classic game of Battlefield's multiplayer, each side scrambling to control points on the map.

This is a map that's been shown off before in trailers and screenshots (like the one above). It looked great there, and in person (admittedly, on a monster machine), it looked...just as great. It's not often you get shot in a multiplayer game because you got caught staring at the effect a tree's shadow had on the running water in a small stream.

More importantly than its looks, though, this played like the same old Battlefield. Playing as infantry, aiming is sharp and responsive. Vehicles were easy to learn but hard to master (though I did shoot a helicopter down with an Abrams at first attempt). There's great and constant visual feedback on where everybody on your team is and, more importantly, where all the spotted bad guys are as well.

Prior to the match kicking off, I had access to the customisation system, which had many items and weapons already unlocked. There was a great deal of scope for individuality here, players able to create their own ideal loadout of weapons, gear and powerups but since I only had one game to try it out on, there's not much more to report on it.

Amazingly, considering I only had 18 minutes of play time, I managed to man a buggy's machine gun, drive a tank and even stroll uncontested into the cockpit of an F-18 (then fly uncontested into the side of a building). Just like the infantry, control of a vehicle and the aiming of their weapons was smooth as butter, especially the tank.

Like the PS3 version, this was supposedly "alpha" code. I have my doubts in this case though, since this looked absolutely ready to go, but whatever! Oh, and since some of you will have some very particular questions about the nuances of the mode, ask them in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer them.

What are Battle Rifles? I mean, what classifies them as Battle Rifles?

I might make a graphic of all the kits and specialisations.

Battle Rifles are the M39 (M14) EMR and SKS, per the BF3 fact sheet:

(They didn't specify the model of SKS that will be used, but I'm thinking it will be a modern variant)

Oh snap, I was wondering if that huge tower or antenna in the border trailer is destructible and Demize99 confirmed that it is on twitter :D . I wonder how many players you can kill with it and whether it falls to the side or just collapses...

Really hope it's dynamic based on the supports that are destroyed. Red Faction: Guerrilla's tower collapses were epic.

They have Littlebirds?! Oy voy!! I used to love those little fuckers in Desert Combat. They're like the quad-bike of the sky! So much fun to fly. I hope they really nail the aerial-acrobatics (and I wonder if the chain guns will be firable by the pilot or if they'll need a secondary crew member? The latter wouldn't make sense realistically, but it might be required for balance, else it'll be an incredibly effective anti-infantry machine).

That is a big fat lie. This guy was always there, waiting for me to try and take his plane, shoot me with his 50.cal rifle, before jumping in himself and crashing it into the side of the carrier.

Have DICE said why the commorose is PC only or if they're willing to consider it for consoles? I think that it would be perfect on a controller if you could just hold down select and then move the right stick to what you want to say. I like good communication online but no one that uses a mic has ever said anything worthwhile.

I believe it was recently confirmed for consoles as well.

Looking through the EA UK forums it seems it was confirmed in a QA. Then in a second QA session it was stated it would not be there at launch, but possibly some time after.

You know, now when people will be able to spawn inside veichles directly, I might actually miss this (13s-1m55s, the intro).

Fun fact: Noken, guy who made this, later became employed by DICE to make their trailers, you can see his name in any multiplayer gameplay trailer down in the squad listing.

I don't think the commo rose was confirmed for consoles, but they're considering it.

Honestly, DICE has been pretty damned good with community feedback for BF3. If that means anything, good chance it will be in for consoles.
