Square Enix take a second week at the top with ‘Tomb Raider’ (-72%) holding off a host of new debutants to remain at No1.

It means Sony have to settle for second spot with Demi God Kratos returning in ‘God of War Ascension’ at No2. Ascension becomes the 6th title in the series but fails to emulate the success of God of War III which took the No1 spot in Week 11 2010 with more than double the sales. It does however become the second biggest Week 1 in the series surpassing the debut week of God of War II which took the No1 back in Week 17 2007.

Activision Blizzard and developer Blizzard Entertainment round off the No3 spot with ‘StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm’. The PC title shares something in common with current chart topper ‘Tomb Raider’ being another ‘Event’ title with a Tuesday launch. There’s also a debut at No4 as City Interactive return with ‘Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2’. In its first week it doesn’t break the Top 3 however it does top its predecessor which has never climbed higher than No8 in our All Formats chart.

Three new titles in our top 4 means last week’s No2 ‘SimCity’ (-50%) drops to No5 ahead of ‘FIFA 13’ (-14%) at No6. Ubisoft’s ‘Far Cry 3’ (-3%) climbs a spot to No7 above EA’s ‘Crysis 3’ (-42%) which slips to No8. ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ (-14%) drops to No9 while ‘The Sims 3: University Life’ (-57%) which made its debut at No4 last week slides to No10.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
GOW: Ascension less than half the sales of GOWIII, but still the second best debut in the series...and Tomb Raider outsells it despite a 72% drop.

Tomb Raider must have had a BIG first week indeed.

Looks like Sniper will be printing money for CI again :)

Also no Wii U/Vita games in top 40 individual by units and by value.

Go Tomb Raider!

Also, what's up with SimCity Limited Edition outselling regular SimCity in a few areas? Doesn't seem very limited to me.

Great too see Lara beat up Kratos, deserves it for that stupid trophy name. Anyways Hitman Absolution continues to stay on the chart, SquareEnix must be happy with the sales of both series.

How long until we have a week without a 3DS title in the UK Top 40?

In packed weeks like this one (a good amount of big titles have been released in the last 4 weeks) is when you realize how completely irrelevant is Nintendo's 3D portable console for the UK market.

By the way:

I think that's 3 straight months without a Wii-U title in the charts. Ouch.

Edit: I guess 12 weeks would be more accurate than 3 months.

Still better than the other Castlevania titles on DS! They weren't even in DS top 20 / top 40! XD
...No, really, those titles really flopped in UK big time, and sincerly I don't know why so much. And those got released on DS, can't comprehend such a big aversion for handheld Castlevania titles.

Perhaps Nintendo should realise that they need to release games! Honestly have no idea what is going on over at Nintendo Towers right now, but it doesn't seem like a sense of urgency.

Meh week.

We might see a PSV or Wii U game in the chart next week, though.

Big week for Wii U with Monster Hunter, NFSMW and Walking Dead. Dead or Alive is out on PSV and of course MH3 on 3DS, as well.

In my opinion Nintendo are completely out of touch with consumer needs/wants for hardware and software, which is why the WiiU is what it is (hardware + branding) and why they're not releasing the sort of games that are popular today.

Not a particularly popular opinion perhaps but thats my thinking.

I feel Monster Hunter will chart on both platforms, definitely. Walking Dead has a very, very little possibility of charting on Wii U. Dead or Alive should chart too...but I fear NFSMWU will fail to chart big time.

Well yeah, I'd say I'm surprised, but when there hasn't been a launch of a single noteworthy game since November last year, I'm not sure what Nintendo expected.

Hopefully monster hunter and lego city can edge into the charts somewhere when they release on the 28th.

When does Luigi's Mansion come out... in about a week? Then yeah, about a week. Monster Hunter won't do shit.

They expected the same thing that happened to all previous Nintendo consoles - that machines will sell and whatever Mario game they have thrown at it till be tracking along at 50-60% ratio of weekly sales ;)

This probably still is true but the levels of hardware sales mean it's happening outside of top 40.

Wii U is finished. It's tanking worldwide. GCN LTD numbers beckon if they're lucky. If they somewhat turn it around, perhaps around N64 numbers - 30 to 35 millions. Bear in mind that the N64 was a powerhouse and had a string of hits from Rare such as the genre-defining Goldeneye whereas the Wii U just doesn't appear to have that luxury.

3DS is at least somewhat salvageable due to Nintendo's entrenched position, the lack of competition in the handheld market and the fact that graphics and cutting edge tech just doesn't matter as much in the handheld sector. And Pokemon -- amongst others -- is still popular and a solid commercial pull.

That is pretty terrible for God of War. Now of course it never has been that big of a hit in the UK, but still..

Outselling GoW2's first week is pretty terrible? It didn't do as good as GoW3, but i wouldn't say it was "pretty terrible"

Eidos deserve success with TR - despite the lack of real survival or injury mechanics in the title (something akin to MGS3's systems should really have been included... :-/).

Not bad for GoW but not brilliant either. Certainly wouldn't have expected it to beat GoWIII but at the same time disappointing it was less than half too. Should have really been no.1, especially wtith such a big drop for Tomb Raider, though that did have the best selling week 1 so far this year.

But the GoW wasn't as hyped and I think the way they focused way too much on multiplayer early on rather than hype the single player up won't have helped. By all means add multiplayer to it to extend the life and value of the package, but not as the main focus. I'm a big GoW fan but Ascension kind of just crept up and released with no hype or anticipation. I remember being so excited about III, yet not with this one. Again partly due to the focus on multi.

Though saying all that, I feel it's the weakest GoW in the series. So for me disappointing sales and disappointing game.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Its interesting youre not already firmly in the alarmist column, jvm. Seems like youre giving them a lot of benefit of the doubt when the thing is shifting software at a sub-Vita level, something you seemingly consider plenty dead.

Oh and god bless the first comment. UK GAMES SALES ARE DEAD. Ignore giant red and green bars.

As I kind of hinted at the beginning of the column, I personally was unsure how Sony could get out of the hole they dug at the PS3 launch. But they got out, and I do think there is still a group of people that Nintendo can get on board with their system. And I'm willing to wait until the April briefing... but not much further.

Another strong looking week for PC. Especially when, once again, digital sales add nothing to those numbers.

Infact looking at that chart it's been a strong year.

What could you expect the briefing to bring in though? Announcements of rapid development house expansion (including porting teams ala MS' Minecraft initiative), price drops, and an irrationally early July/August date for a 3d Mario or Mario Kart?

Its true Sony had an uphill struggle with the PS3 and some big decisions to make, but they had all the cards in their hand to activate those initiatives (huge developer resources, a roadmap for hardware costs shrinking and carving out things to the basic behemoth that horrible PS3 super slim is today). Nintendo's in a state where they have these sales and barring a new Nintendogs/Brain Training phenomenon, no way out. Theres no slim model, the streaming tech and Gamepad seems to be way more of a set price than blu ray diodes ever were affecting any price drops of note, and they just dont have the sheer size of Sony's extended development studio reach. Nor a studio like Naughty Dog or SSM throwing their tech all over the place and things like the Phyre and subsequent ICE engines.

Sales are down 20% compared to last year. Overall, I mean.

Curious to see GoW numbers for mainland europe. France and Germany charts are usually a week behind right?

Yes, I concede these points. Sony had tremendous results on the PS2 to help carry over to the PS3, and Nintendo is working from a position of weakness.

I wanted to say in the column, but held back: The Wii U strikes me as a platform that's simultaneously too early to market and too late. It's too early, because Nintendo clearly didn't have its online strategy where it needs to be to compete (IMO) and retailers are not ready for Nintendo to go fully digital. On the other hand, it's too late because the Wii is so far gone that a PS2-PS3-style transition is basically impossible now. Oh, and Wii HD, or whatever. :p

Unless that transition is supposed to be from low-level sales to low-level sales, in which case Nintendo's succeeded. :p

It took Sony years to turn PS3 around and "all the cards" weren't so apparent in March 07. You seem pretty eager yourself to establish a hard and fast "no way out" for Nintendo comparatively...

And Wii all know why.

This year too? In the last years most of it has been due to Nintendo consoles (but not just that, looking at the overall numbers last year for many weeks, especially after the top 10), but this year too? Fortunately, it's not as steep as last year.
