"Micromart, a UK-based console repair company, is ceasing its repair service for Microsoft XBOX 360 units suffering from the "3 Red Lights fault."
An update on their company page (http://www.micromartltd.co.uk/) claims that "(the) problem is endemic on the XBox 360 console and the volume has made this repair non-viable." They continue to support other XBOX 360 repairs.
Via their "Customer Info" page, Micromart suggests that customers with "3 Red Lights" errors contact Microsoft directly.

Decided to turn on my 360 after not doing so for about 1 week. Started downloading some trailers and the shit freezes. I restart and I get the ring of death. Now I have to call in to get another shitty, cum stained, cat pissed on 360 instead of a new one. I hardly play my 360 but this is my THIRD ****ing broken 360. It wasn't even shocking but I'm done. And what hurts is that I just Casablanca HD-DVD and planned to watch it tonight. So **** it I'm also selling the HD-DVD player.


THIS BULLSHIT MS.

The Intercooler certainly keeps it cooler. However, there are other issues, as it can ruin your system.

Also, I just got a call from a MS rep who is now assigned to me. He said he will call me when tracking details are available and again when it is delivered. Now that is better service.

Anyways, I came here to share with you all this little reply I got from Gamespot when asking if they were gonna start covering this whole deal some time already.

Add me to the list, my entire screen went blood red whilst playing Crackdown a while back. Since it was returned/repaired, it has been fine but has developed an occasional 'barking' sound in the drive when I start it up.

Your situation is similar to mine. My console died on the 7th and MS received it on the 19th. So yours shouldn't be too far behind mine, though I get the impression my repair was pushed through the system a bit faster than usual here at the end.

this shit should not take 3-4 weeks. i extended mine by a few days by being out of town when the coffin arrived, but from other accounts 3 weeks seems to be the average lately.

edit: thank god i bought a ds. it's helping to keep me sane...

I wanted to commend 1Up and Philip Kollar for actually asking some hard questions of MS and reporting on the problem. Hopefully, other sites and media will follow their lead (although it seems Gamespot is ducking the issue a little bit).

Yes, I believe the average is about 2 weeks from the day MS receives the console till you receive it back. In June 2006, I received my console back not even 2 weeks after it died.

We need to run a poll on the main page to find out how many people on GAF have a 360, just to find out what the failure rate on this board is. Since we're all hardcore gamers, it should give us an insight on how many 360s break under "hardcore gaming" conditions. Just a poll asking "Do you own an Xbox 360?" with just yes or no.

Besides, it's not like fanboys could really screw up that poll like the 360gamer.com one.

I'm serious, I think it's a great idea.

I believe the ones which sit underneath the console (when it is vertical) can be very good. I did see a test somewhere (can't remember the site name but a quick google would show it) for the Nyko and one of those that sits underneath and they both lowered the internal temperatures. But yeah, the early Nyko's had problems with the power connection so I wouldn't touch them.

The ones that sit underneath are good because they just run off a USB port and you can keep them on after turning off the console. After the console is off is when many 360's die because of the rapid cooling (I theorise) so this would help. I tend to leave mine on the dashboard for a few minutes after playing to help it cool slightly before turning it off completely, but as yet I haven't bought an external fan because I'm planning on cracking the box open in a couple of months and installing additional fans.

We debated doing a poll for the story (and I think Philip conducted an informal one at EvilAvatar), but it's hard to take anything done on the Internet seriously, especially given the ridiculous nature of fanboys these days. An inner-office one could work, but Microsoft could easily attribute that to 1UP's excessive use of consoles vs. the typical gamer.

I agree it would be good, but in the meantime the 34% refurb/replacement failure rate (!) is quite telling because Microsoft are repairing them to 'as new condition'.

Really, there is little reason to doubt that they are repairing them to 'as new condition' because it is not in their interests to repair something to a standard worse than new.

I'd bet that a 'refurbished' unit has just had the motherboard and attached components replaced from new stock.

I'd also bet that the failure rate of 360 is close to the failure rate of the refurbished units, seeing as how they fail for the same reason.

This is the same line of bullshit I received....TWO WEEKS AGO!!!
Personal care? Yeah right, if you mean Personal "****-YOU-from-MS" phone attendant.

The classic part of my MS XB360 adventures to date is that while I am getting the shaft on my 360 Premium repair/swap-out-with-"new"-refurb, I won a new 360 Elite in a MS sponsored EA Sports preview event for NCAA Football 2008...I am taking bets now on how long it will be until THAT system also takes a dump...

I'll post my brief experiences thus far and this may help someone who is experiencing similar symptoms.

About a week ago I experienced a strange lockup that I had never gotten before. I was comparing games with someone using the dashboard/blades and after comparing the gaming hitting back on the controller resulted in a grey blade loading with just the red and green accept and back buttons being shown but no data or anything. The system had hard locked. I shrugged it off and figured it happens.

Earlier this week I had the exact same lockup doing the exact same thing and I became worried. I restarted my console and after about 20 minutes of Pacman CE I switched over to Gears and played maybe 30minutes worth. After having a few uneventful matches and a few disconnect / connection issues I quit to the dash. I didnt give it second notice but right after quitting i went and held the Guide button in an attempt to shut down the console but to my dismay it was hard locked. I turned it off by using the front button and went to bed thinking that my console may be dying.

The following day I did some diagnosis and I found the root of my problem ( I think ). I've had my console since Christmas and the build date is that of October, so I dont have the noisiest drive but the second one that isnt as quiet as the most recent drive revision. Anyway I went into my network blade and saw that i had a wireless connection of 1 red bar and began noticing that I was getting disconnected from live quite frequently when leaving the console idle. As if it was struggling to stay connected.

I went to my wireless router and moved it around a bit and adjust it so it would send a better signal, returned to my 360 and bam, 3 solid green bars. I've since had no connection issues and zero freezes checking or comparing games or once quitting a game.

I did have a single lockup playing the free movie rental of Austin Powers after watching maybe 40minutes of it trying to bring up the menu to pause/stop/quit it locked up my 360.

All in all Im hoping that the wireless connection fickleness was causing my lockups and not the impending death of my console. Heres to good luck and I hope this might help someone.

Sorry to hear that, but I got word that my system shipped, so I got lucky I guess.

You must have misread the list. sega4ever is on it (for two consoles, even). And we know your 360 is WORKING FINE, you mention it in just about every post you make.

I'll bet we have a "Y" who hasn't bothered to post. There was another thread where I mentioned this list, and 3 or 4 people posted saying they had dead 360's and weren't in the list.

add me to your list of doom fellas! appears my console is dead... we'll see what tech support says but i can't get any dvd-based GAMES to work. however, my XBLA and DVD movies still work fine... not sure what the problem is...
