Episode 546: That’s My Alf Story

This week! This week! Wait, maybe Nintendo’s gonna make a Super Nintendo Mini after all, Target gets all Mario Kart 8 Deluxed up, Call of Duty returns to its roots, everyone but CJ plays Wonder Boy, we talk about the Disney Afternoon Collection, and there’s a whole big thing about gambling mechanics in free to play games (a handy chapter at that part will allow you to skip right over if your podcast client supports it!). Join us, won’t you?

"I don't have enough HDMI ports"

What a tragedy lol.

What's up with Barenaked Ladies and Halifax by the way? Google shows me they got a tour date there in the fall. Guess they don't hate it that much.

Neil Young, Barenaked Ladies, and BTO are the only Canadian bands I've listened to. Am I missing anything that's great?

Personally, Crystal Castles.

I think Rush are Canadian

The Tragically Hip. But their lead guy is terminal unfortunately so the band disbanded after doing a final tour last year or so. or not. Apparently they are working on another record

Edit: oh yeah, Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Montreal locals if I remember correctly.

Edit 2: Electric Ganon talk: that punk did a number on me cause I am abysmal at parrying. And then his final phase. He has plenty of attacks like a boxer mixing up his hits so I had to keep my distance as he came in because I didn't have any wooden shields (and it didn't occur to me) and then when he de-electrified that's when I got tough with him again.

Great episode, had the chance to listen up to the Tweets. One of my kids just got a 2DS for his bday so the XL chatter was timely. I was thinking about setting up a credit card for the eshop ... is that the norm or do most (read: GAF) go with point cards? I'm not familiar with Nintendo's rep with card management/hacking issues.

Plan to grab Outrun based on Greg's endorsement several eps ago ... In case my son wants to play, of course.

You can set up a pin with your credit card. If the pin is entered incorrectly three times, the credit card data is deleted. That made me feel good enough to just have my card on there. Or you can just buy digital point cards on Amazon if you don't want to put your card on a device that a child could easily lose.

Thank you, great info ... I will look into both avenues.

Rush? Good to see the Anne Murray nod, dang fine country singer. The late great Hank Snow of Halifax is a country music legend. Greg, I hope you regularly visit The Singing Ranger's museum.

I have not.

I did get to interview Anne Murray once for a television show, though. There's an Anne Murray museum in Springhill, which is in the region I covered when I worked for Eastlink TV.

The Senran Kagura segment was hilarious. I'm so happy it's Ethan that had to describe it.

Zelda talk: do the northwest. Snowboarding at its best.
Upgrade your Sheikah armor.

Thanks for the new episode! :)

Listening to the complaints about Nintenodo's stingy DLC for BOTW, forgetting that Nintendo literally sell plastic toys to unlock BOTW features that could reasonably be free. I really like the sounds of the 'DLC pack 1' features but I agree that it's frustrating to be asked to pay for it as a season pass when the main substance of content is still unknown.

As far as the Zelda DLC, this is what Nintendo announced before the game was released, seems pretty descriptive of what it will entail:

Pack 1 - Summer 2017

A new Cave of Trials challenge
Hard mode
"A new feature for the in-game map"

Pack 2 - Holiday 2017

A new dungeon
A new "original story"
Additional challenges

I agree that map feature should be free but not sure why the Cave of Trials (let's call it an additional game mode) or Hard mode should be free when plenty of other games charge for it.

This is very similar to the Last of Us DLC. Naughty Dog charged $20 for their season pass and it was the same deal, you got the single player story, a hard mode difficulty and a bunch of other multiplayer goodies that nobody really wanted to pay for.

And yes, it doesn't mean ok if others do it but this is the reality of today's industry, and this stuff is optional.

I hate to say it but if Zelda was a "game as a service" that had an ongoing revenue stream, then updates like the DLC Pack 1 stuff would be fairly no-brainer as free updates. Of course. Or if the game needed a multiplayer player base to stick around. And they have already made a few free updates to game functionality to fix slowdown and add the multiple language option. Obviously, video games are a business blah blah blah. I think an extra $20 is a fair ask for these new features - namely (for me) Cave of Trials, the fast travel anywhere point, a new dungeon, and new story. The rest of that is cake... I doubt I'd use it, but it could be fun.

Then again, I bought Breath of the Wild and all the Amiibo for it. I preordered the Best Buy/Gamestop Zelda Amiibo. I bought the Season Pass before even loading up the game for the first time. When it comes to Zelda, if it's something worthwhile relating to the game money can easily be extracted from me. I am part of the problem. But again like I said in the show, if it's a game I love and they're offering more of that thing for me to play/experience, I am way into it. Sign me up. If I cared more about Fire Emblem and that was a game I dumped a ton of hours into, I would be way into getting more game for that price. You mean I don't have to wait for them to make a whole new game years from now and I can get more out of the game I already have? YES, a thousand times yes.

I understand the "it should be free!" argument of course. It was/is the same with mobile games for a while. And I agree that ideally a hardware manufacturer like Nintendo would want to keep its user base happy by providing free updates to key software titles after launch. Splatoon and Mario Maker had free updates that extended the lives of those games.

This is true. The original description of DLC Pack 1 sounded like crap that isn't worth buying, and the more detailed description confirmed that to be the case. DLC Pack 2 sounds intriguing and will probably be worth buying for $20, which is why they should have probably just skipped the "season's pass" thing and had one DLC pack in the fall with the actual good stuff. Trickle out all of that other filler bullet list stuff as free updates to keep people engaged until the good paid content arrives.

Except then you lose 75% or more of your possible customers who will have long put the game away or sold it back. By offering the Season Pass up front, outlining some of the content, and allowing people to buy it right away when the game is current in their mind, they'll keep people from selling it back and get them to come back to the game when an update is released. If you're gonna do a season pass or DLC, best to announce it before the game's available or right after.

Pre-sell the DLC for $15 at launch, then sell the DLC for $20 when it gets released. Trickle most of those other features out as free updates. The free updates would go a long way to retaining your audience, I would think.

Oh...and don't lock loot behind amiibo and then jack up the price of said plastic toys.

A good alternative for the Ultimate Game Guide for NES book is the app version. I believe you can filter things like "konami" "1988", what is cool to do with the NES Classic hacked with 600 games.

Also, if you wanna give or build a similar machine of NES Classic, you have this NES shell for the Retropie:

Greg's Ethan impression is tremendous! ✨

I too was thoroughly unimpressed with Arms, but I think it's just the final example that I don't care about Nintendo's competitive multiplayer games. I keep trying but they're for someone else, and that's totally okay.

Meanwhile the 'Breath of the Wild = Minecraft' part almost made me drive off the road. 🙃

Tweet question: Will the P1Podcast climb back to the top of the yarn ball and do a Game Club on the newly announced Bubsy game, or will they stumble and fall into the kitty litter because only Switch games are discussed anymore. Alternatively, how excited are you CJ for a new Bubsy game?!?!?!?

I cannot wait to discuss more Bubsy on the podcast. Expect so much Bubsy in your earholes this week.
