Wouldn't this (DSi) just make DS games more pixelated? I'm a little worried about not being able to read signs in this game. I certainly can't discern them from static screenshots...

No. Same resolutions, but bigger screen.

I went to the midnight launch for this game at the Nintendo World Store, and it was easily the best midnight launch I've ever attended. I actually won a limited edition Chinatown Wars DS Lite in a raffle.

I am inclined to buy this after reading Eurogamer's 10/10.

I loved GTA4 and the expansion, so a little portable version with a new story sounds great.

One thing I noticed is that for someone straight out of Hong Kong, the main character seems to have no problem whatsoever with colloquial English.

Although, I suppose I'd probably be offended if they used "Engrish". Ya can't win. :lol

I hate gta and think it has some of the worst functioning mechanics ever...yet I want to try this...

It certainly looks better than the rest of them.

Hong Kong use to be a territory of the United Kingdom. Its not that much of a surprise that people coming from there would speak English.

Well, a) unless you're British or rich, you probably won't speak English fluently because Cantonese would be your primary language and b) even if HKers did speak fluent English, they wouldn't sound like or speak like Americans, complete with the same sense of irony and sarcasm.

I guess that's the fundamental problem with text-only cutscenes. Imagine if Niko didn't have his accent? It'd be an entirely different character.

I suppose it's also possible that it's supposed to be translated Cantonese, but I don't think the game gives any indication either way.

I don't see it as a problem. I am just sitting back and enjoying it. Like you mentioned earlier, they were kind of damned either way they went with it and chose to take the illogical path over the offensive one. I think it was the right choice.

This game's really fun kids!

I was just screwing around, exploring the town and stuff trying to find weapons and armour and I'm like "huh, this is pretty good". Then I found a tank (with a side mission in it :D), ran over a few cop cars and blew up 10-15 pedestrians and I'm like "Holy shit! GTA on the DS!!!".

Seriously impressed with the first 1:45 or so I've been playing this morning (yes I got up early to go to Wal-Mart). Well, actually the dialogue stinks and the story is pretty mundane so far, but the best part? Who cares!? Chinatown Wars is straight-up fun a la Saint's Row 2. I've only done one mission and have been having fun exploring and doing side stuff.

Positives:

-Great touchscreen use, from jacking cars to placing markers on the map. Most can be done with thumbs, not much need for stylus at all

-The HUD solution on the top screen works without getting in the way.

-Graphics look good in motion and the game runs smoothly, even when blowing people up

-Soundtrack fits perfect even without lyrics in songs, reminds me of Bully

-More Side Missions!

Negatives:

-Liberty City is almost too populated with cars and pedestrians, makes driving fast kind of tricky

R* Leeds obviously knows how to make a "fun" GTA. Hopefully they're working on San Andreas Stories for Wii/PSP, forgot how much I'd enjoyed VCS.

Drive in the middle of the road dude, follow the central line, the car almost sticks to it like a magnet when you correct the car's movements with the deftest of touches. But yeah, there's almost too many cars on the road sometimes.

I've picked it up and played it for about an hour now.

I like the game itself, it really captures the good old GTA feeling quite well. The touch screen implementation is great too, let's hope it won't get annoying after a while!

One thing this game reminded me of though... I fucking HATE the DSL's dpad.

I just want to say this is quite possibly my favourite GTA game made by Rockstar in the last oh-so-many years.

I've always liked GTA2 over the 3D incarnations, but still appreciated the advancements made.

Chinatown Wars is pretty much a perfect equilibrium between the two. It also feels 100% built for the DS. No watered down gameplay, no gimmicky crap; this is amazing.

It's so fucking feature packed, action packed, and gloriously wild. Goddamn, this game is up there with every reason to own a DS.

Are there any video reviews up yet? I'm really trying hard to understand how this game is getting such great reviews. I admit, I completely dismissed this game the moment I saw the overhead perspective (I liked GTA1 and 2, but not in a 9/10 or 10/10 way, more of a 7/10 way) so I assumed (wrongly) that this would be like that.

I really need to see a review where they explain why it's great with gameplay footage to illustrate it. Maybe one of those Giant Bomb play sessions would be perfect for this game?

It's great because of how fresh, yet advanced, it feels.

It's hard to explain because after GTA2 the franchise has focused so much on 3D. Rather than being a pure take-back to the 2D era, it simply takes the feel and atmosphere yet enhances it greatly with the achievements made by the 3D games.

I don't really see how anybody could be disappointed with this title. It's so fucking amazing.

It's set up in the beginning that the main character is rich, so he would know English.

and b) even if HKers did speak fluent English, they wouldn't sound like or speak like Americans, complete with the same sense of irony and sarcasm.

He would speak with a British accent, which you couldn't tell from the text anway.

Its so great because its GTA3 on a handheld. Least thats the impressions I'm getting.

Does anyone know if the street layout is the same as GTAIV?

I'd love to see the whole city in 2D form.
Minus the third island, yeah, it's pretty close. I've noticed a few landmarks and could drive between them from memory of GTA IV. I'm actually surprised considering the GBA GTA game looked nothing like GTA3's Liberty City.

Oh, and technically, the city is still 3D. It's just a different perspective.

Right, yeah. I worded that a bit funkily. But that's so good to hear. GTAIV is like my Peggle. I'd love to just have (parts of) the city with me at all times.

Man I'm torn on this title. I was pretty much set on avoiding it after my total dislike for GTA IV, but after reading some reviews and the GAF impressions, it sounds like this game pretty much removes all of the things I found so tedious about GTA IV (and to a lesser extent San Andreas), and adds some great elements. Besides, I'm a sucker for clever touchscreen use, and it sounds as if this game has it in spades.

Also, unlike GTA IV, there doesn't seem to be any big backlash of negative impressions countering the positive reviews, although it may only be because of the difference in hype levels between the two games.

I'm in the same boat as you with GTAIV, the countless escort missions in the early hours killed my enthusiasm for the game. This one seems much more focused on the fun stuff.

This game is awesome, and I didn't even like GTA anymore. I drove by a crash scene earlier, a car collided with a semi and police and firefighters were trying to put the fires out. Didn't even notice me running over some pedestrians on the way by. It's cool that you can also crash their cars to get your wanted level down. My only gripe is that I wish you could lower the camera angle just a hair so that you could see a little further in advance, but I'm guessing there would be massive pop up if you could do this.

There sure are. In the first hour, I've:

Jimmied a screwdriver in the ignition to start a car (rotate the screwdriver according to onscreen directions)

Hotwired the ignition (unscrew the ignition panel screws, connect the wires and twist the leads)

Bypassed the electric ignition (attach a PIN generator and stop the numbers when they match)

Attached a bug to the underside of a car

Played several different scratch-off lottery cards

Hong Konger can speak English well. Of course not on the American level, as they usually speak Cantonese, but they learn English throughout their education so they can speak English no problem.

Also, do people find the Liberty City here is more populated than all of the past 3D GTA games? The streets are packed with cars and people!

Yep. Dan Houser and someone else(missed the other name in the awesome opening credits). You need to get this BB. I've only played a couple of missions, but it's exactly what I wanted.

It seems like people are liking this more than Liberty City Stories (which really is GTA3 on a hand held) or Vice City Stories. Is it just because it's a new setting? I have the GTA's on PSP, and while they're good, they are not as fun to play as GTA3, GTA:VC, or GTA:SA.

This game has a very different feel to it, in a better way. I am fine with the PSP games, but they feel like a water-down version of console games. But this one feels like its own game. The structure feels similar but the gameplay is more fun imo.

I've said it before but R* needs to put this exact team right to work on a Wii game, if they haven't already. I'd love to see what they could accomplish.

Back to Chinatown...
