STAR TREK ONLINE: The |OT| of Going Where No Gamer Has Gone Before....

Anyone after K7 can rejoice:

General

* The Admiral promotion mission will now complete if players choose a fleet escort as their reward. This is not retro-active. If you’re an Admiral with a dangling promotion mission because you chose an escort, please submit a ticket to CS.
* Cardassian "Empire Defense" mission maps are now open to Klingon players.
* K7 station has been decloaked and returned to the sector map. Alleged perpetrators are being interrogated.
* The "Abandon Ship" power is now only available while in combat.
* General server optimization to increase performance.

They apparently upgraded the servers as well during the downtime.

The information in early WoW was pitiful as well.
no, not really. There was always fairly clear progression in wow. Not exactly as detailed as it it now, but not much less. the worst that could be said about early wow are things like +power or +spell power, how certain procs applied and stuff like that. but the main stat progression was always pretty obvious and even in those cases you still had obvious numeric comparison in terms of +power etc. The only confusing things about wow would have been comparing like a +spr item to a +mana or +spell power item, or figuring out how one proc compared to another proc on a fast or slow weapon, etc. But IMHO that sort of thing SHOULD be left out of the game to a degree as there is such a thing as too much info. STO's current level isn't adequate enough to qualify for that.

For those wondering, from some general testing I've done, the Torpedo Spread ability works awesome with Plasma Torpedoes. You can inflict the DoT effect through the targeted AoE to several targets at once within the spread. It's great against Klingon BoP, Orion Corvettes, Gorn Vishop (sp?) Frigates, fighters, and other targets that tend to group together. The Heavy Plasma Torpedo that's created by using the High Yield Torpedo ability is fucking Slooooow and risks getting shot down, but does insane damage against unshielded targets (my Escort's Plasma Torpedo Mk III has one shotted an unshielded Talon Warship). Best to save it for near point-blank encounters where its slowness is countered somewhat by the closeness of the target.

Double Forward Dual Disruptor Beam Banks are fun too. I Just like them, dunno why (although their ability is pretty useful).

Anyone else having lots of problems tonight? Right now I can't leave Sirius sector block. I just bump into the boarder. Some missions won't load enemies. It says I have to defeat a certain amount but there aren't any there. I also can't enter enemy signal contact battles.

Is it possible to screw up training your crewman?

I notice if you replace a skill you lose the points you have spent on it.

Also having multiple versions of skills makes me not want to even bother putting points into the level 1 versions.

I find life rather cruel without my dear STO... Oh server, please grace us access. Anyone with commander class cruisers? How is it? How do you do in PVP?

New drivers fixed my framerate issues!

Damn youuuuu! :lol

My meagre lappy had this running pretty well. You got the updater in me downloading the latest ATI drivers for my 4330 only to have the game come up with all this 'old drivers, computer is not good enough' stuff.

Now I can't play without being disconnected....

Are all MMOs this troublesome?

While i havent used my Cruiser in PVP. It's a excellent lil tank with the right BO's. I'd stay near a group of Feds in PVP though just to be safe.

Server seems to be working now. I played beta a bit and ended up buying the collector's edition today. That box is so damn awesome with the magnetic clasp.

Anyways. I'd love to get a gaf invite, name is: F'llyn@jonrosing

Well you can always max out your BO skills since BO skill points are not limited like your own character's. You do lose points when you replace skills, but you can easily grind those points back.

Cleared CCC from my computer (I think/hope) Tried the game again and got a patch. I still get that same message on start up (is there anyway to disable that?), but the game runs the same if not better than before. 2 things:

1: how does /showfps work? It usually just shows '0.000000000' for me.

2: How are you guys getting grabs? Print screen?

Horrible server performance right now. Rubberbanding like crazy and disconnected within 2 minutes of logging in.

They shouldn't even have brought the thing back up. :lol

EDIT: Looks like it crashed again. :lol

Well it is a Friday so I expect the server getting slammed and so called "maintenance" is recovering from the load.

While I'm waiting for the servers, I'll post this about the tie-in book:

Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many
by Michael A. Martin (and Jake Sisko)

Prior to the terror-filled times of the Long War—the seemingly endless struggle against the Undine, a paranoid, shape-shifting race once known only as Species 8472—enemy sleeper agents quietly penetrated every echelon of Federation society, as well as other starfaring civilizations throughout the Alpha and Beta quadrants. The ensuing conflict shook humanity to its very core, often placing its highest ideals against a pure survival instinct. All too frequently, the Undine War demanded the harshest of sacrifices and exacted the steepest of personal costs from the countless millions whose lives the great interdimensional clash forever altered.

Drawn from his exhaustive research and interviews, The Needs of the Many delivers a glimpse of Betar Prize–winning author Jake Sisko’s comprehensive "living history" of this tumultuous era. With collaborator Michael A. Martin, Sisko illuminates an often-poorly-understood time, an age marked indelibly by both fear and courage—not to mention the willingness of multitudes of unsung heroes who became the living embodiment of the ancient Vulcan philosopher Surak’s famous axiom, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

Whoa Cryptic should've read that in anticipation for the launch date :lol

But in all seriousness, as a first time MMO player I'm loving it. It's kind of sad but I like the idea of being around at the time of launch. Sort of gives you a bit of history with the game you know?

Seems they cancelled the scheduled downtime for later today and posted the patch during the unscheduled downtime:

General

* Disabled functionality of certain hidden, unsupported commands (like respecpowertrees) that could irreparably break characters. Note to users – Don’t run hidden commands that you find in binary searches or on the forums!
* Romulan "Empire Defense" missions and maps are now open to Klingon players.
* Various translation updates.
* Server stability improvements.

Ugh, I don't know what it is with this game and my computer, but it seems the client is screwed up again. I'm getting fatal errors when trying to start the game now, saying some files are the wrong number of bytes.

Then when I start the patcher back up it goes to verify every file only to end up crashing again to the same error.

You can theoretically grind an unlimited number of Bridge Officer points so wasting them doesn't really ruin your character.

Things to know:

-Training a new skill to replace an old one makes you lose all the skill points spent on the old skill.
-You will end up with low level skills because only one level of a skill is available for certain ranks, so for example:

En: Emergency Power to Shields I
Lt: Extend Shields I
LtC: Directed Energy Modulation II
Com: Aceton Field II

You can't put Aceton Field II in your En skill slot because it's a Com skill.

This makes you decide in advance what skills you should take the low level versions for because you need the higher level slots for better skills only available for higher ranks. Torpedo High Yield is offered in I, II, and III varieties, but they all sit in different rank slots so you could theoretically have them all, but you can't ever have a character that has all II and III level skills.

I think this game is pretty confusing, but I've only been playing for 30 minutes a day since my GPU fan is going crazy every time I play this game. Strange, since it looks like ass, and the fan keeps quiet during pretty much every other game.

They really, really need to fix the way loot is rewarded. Right now, loot is assigned to a group or individual based on total damage done to the enemy. If you are alone and do the most damage, you get the item. If you are in a party, your party's total damage is compared to other parties, and the highest party gets the loot for round robin.

However, since Escourts do the best DPS and there is no death penalty, Science and Cruisers get screwed over. Their roles are support and tanking, but neither of those are required and Escourts just solo and get all the loot. Also Fleet Action rewards are based on how much total damage you did, and this means the best loot always goes to Escourts.

The mission and skill descriptions are really vague, and I often find myself having to look several times to see where I'm supposed to go, if it even tells me. The map is also useless for telling you where mission objectives are.

Click the triangle in the top right corner near your minimap. Go to Visit C-store. Click the 2nd tab and claim your free stuff. The first tab is selling Klingon (240?) and Ferengi (80) races as playable Federation characters for Cryptic points.

I absolutely have to fight with at least one other ship if I am to survive any mission seriously. I am brave/foolish enough to go it alone but I get doomed so easily as I attack squadrons of enemies at once and get surrounded.

Sometimes if I know I am doomed I intentionally take my ship and just continuously mount/collide with the enemy ship so we're hull to hull and when I die, I take the enemy ship with me by my desutrction... very effective at times.

Anyone else having trouble putting their BOs in TOS uniforms? It just doesn't seem to take.
Putting the special uniforms on bridge officers is bugged at the moment I believe.

I just picked the collector's edition and am enjoying it so far. Space combat is great and so far the ground missions haven't been too bad. Hopefully there is a decent amount of mission variety.

I don't think I've died once during ship combat. I'm finding it too easy.

I'm doing it wrong I guess. I go right into the thick of battle when I should be attacking from a distance I guess diverting all power to weapons instead of shields maybe.

When you go in too fast and get surrounded it always ends in tears, like you said the best way is to stay at a distance, use all your BO abilities straight away on your first target (which should die very quickly) then move onto the next one.

I always have all power to weapons, if it starts going badly then transfer it to shields.

Though sometimes it can't be helped, even if I attack from a distance there are a group of fighters attacking me from teh same direction, it gets same results.... so I need another person to draw their fire away sometimes :lol

I tend to keep all power to shields. Keep turning your ship so that your strongest shields are facing the enemies attack. Once you were the enemies shields down quickly turn to launch photon torpedoes.

Yeah I should change my strategy... I always want to face forward so my most powerful weapons always face target cuz my aft weapons don't do shit. And thus my forward shields weardown hella fast.

I can't believe this shit.

I reinstalled the game after that fatal error, and it seemed to fix it last night. I didn't have time to play, but the game loaded just fine.

Go to play just a minute ago and the same fatal error is back. What the fuck Cryptic. I pretty much can't play the game any more if not even a fresh reinstall will fix the issue for more than a few hours.

You must have some other program conflicting with the game somehow like a background task like a screensaver or some kind of security or scannning program?

Hmm, I played the beta and enjoyed it as a game, but wasn't too thrilled about it as an MMO. However, saying that, I'm starting to get the temptation to buy it :\
