PRICE OF THIS BUILD IS 269 NOW AS OF JULY 2009

So today I got home with some new PC stuff that will hopefully make it possible to play Crysis in a setting that will make it look better then any console game to date. 399 is the price of the PS3 at the moment, which imho also has the best looking console game, Uncharted. I needed a new PC for a while now, but I was also curious in how far PC's and console could compete at the same pricepoint (because we all know that if price doesn't matter PC's eat consoles for breakfast). All parts come from a normal store, no shipping costs!

So what did I get for 399?
AMD X2 5000+ (99$)
2GB DDR2 800 (39$)
ATI Radeon 3850 256 MB (140$)
Motherboard (50$)
Casing+PSU (50$)
DVD ROM (20$)
(used old HDD with XP, everyone has one right?)
So far I'm busy installing updates and everything.

New Casing, not too shabby looking for 49 euro (including PSU!)

Ati Radeon 3850, the best mid range GPU atm

Where do I hook this stuff up?

Well, I that case, you'll find Crysis to be amazingly good looking on your rig as well.

Your PSU is an absolute POS isn't it? Unless maybe you bought a cheap Rosewin which is good for the price I think. The video card won't do much too, but it fits the project.

I'm not sure what the point of this project is, Crysis will run on something worse I think. I would have spent double on a PC that can last around 2 years at least.

Upgrading a PC just for one game is so not for me.

Actually I don't even care to play Crysis. I just want to see if I can have it looking better then Uncharted. Only games I'll be playing is WoW, SC2, Witcher. HL2 etc.

It's some 400 watt POS yeah, but it seems to support everything in my system.

$50 motherboard? Isn't that the one part you don't want to cheap out on?

Dunno actually, this is my first time building a PC (sic!), I'm no expert on this stuff, but this Mainboard has all the functions I need it seems.

It depends. First off, this seems like it is mostly an experiment so in this case it would be fine, and as long as he found something nice and stable, not having the options for RAID, onboard wireless and a host of other useless features shouldn't be too bad.

evlcookie

but ever so delicious
You should be fine. Might have to play on low / medium settings at say 1024x768 , but you might live :lol

Your 399 PC is a good price if all goes well.

Awesome! I'm predicting your pc to beat anything on 360 or ps3. Can't wait to see the results! :D
Have they even made new racing sims in the GT5p region yet?

I'm not even trying, was an easy one.

Seriously, he must've missed out on a couple of the best looking games this gen.

I think you've missed the "imho" part.

Really?

I finished Gears on my 360 and Uncharted on my PS3. Anything I missed on consoles?

Yeah, opinions, always hated those.

Anyway, you should've spent a little more money and just buy the Geforce 8800 GT for better performance.

Yeah like Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed (overlooked by so many, but technically really impressive), Bioshock (great art AND great graphics... wow)...

A PSU is a bad place to go Scrooge on.

Random errors galore!

Personally, I think he'll be fine with the stock case one. Is your hard-drive fairly decent Kosma? I'd create a dedicated partition for the page-file if you're only using one, Crysis will love you for it.

It's an ancient IDE 80Gb drive actually, I formatted and parititioned it and installed XP Pro again.

Played both, and they both look ace, but not this gens best. And as far as the 8800GT, that would put me way over my 399 (PS3) budget.

399 euro huh? thats like 600 usd.

True. But the PS3 is also 399 euro here.

Kosma, if you have STALKER as well, give that a shot. Crank 'er up.

Don't have it yet, but since it's only 19 euro now I will def pick it up :)

I usually create 3 partitions. One for the Windows system files and the page file, one for software installs, and the 3rd for media/porn. Works really good. I'm using 150 of my 250 gigs, and the system still runs at nearly the same speed as when I built it. (I also have a 4th partition for Linux, but that's another thing).

I give the Windows partition 10 gigs, software 100 gigs, and media/porn the rest (and Linux 10 gigs).

Fair enough, each it's own I guess.

Well I don't wanna be an ass, but that's a pretty stupid rule you've set up for yourself you know. This is throwing away money, just because of a principle you've set up for yourself.

I have that card and the performance/price ratio is impressive but at 1680x1050 don't expect to play it at higher than medium. And Crysis at medium looks 360ish.
But if you play it at Halo3 resolution i bet it will look much better than any 360 game.

The cool thing of that computer is that it will play any other modern game at high or very high settings.

Well i am really happy to get the 3850 instead of the 8800GT, as i said i can play any other game at high setting if not the highest, and you know what? the 8800GT struggles with crysis too.

and the $70 extra are in my pocket, and growing for a future card, but to be honest i don't see myself upgrading anytime soon.

What? He's not throwing away money, it's still a decent computer. Just because you think he should have spent more money doesn't mean he threw away his money.

You're not an ass, but 399 is a nice budget I set up for myself for multiple reasons and I really didn't want to spend more then that.

Got this PC hooked up to my 720P HDTV, so it's not going to run in anything beyond 1360*768.

I made it up myself I guess.

Pfff, I wouldn't spend $399 just for crysis. That's like...one game. WHats the point of being able to play crysis and then you can't play anything else, since he made it for crysis and all, so he can't play any other games.

pfff, you so silly OP.

Good luck! Anxious to see your results.

I got an excellent deal on two 8800GT's recently now in SLi and Crysis still isn't performing ideally (I refuse to play below 1920x1200!). My CPU is a little outdated though, socket 939 amd 4200+ OC'd to 2.4ghz. I'm thinking that might be a bottleneck, but I'm open to other people's interpretations. Birthday's coming up though, so I'm looking forward to the newer not $1000 Penryn Quad Cores.

For anyone who could offer some advice, I'm running patch 1.1 and the new Nvidia beta drivers. I'm getting the best results with AFR2.

A little suggestion, get the 512MB version if you can. I got the 256MB one because i though that 512MB was too much for that card, i was wrong.
