Chrono Cross gets my honorable mention but some of that is the bleed over from the great intro and attract reel.

Glad to see Metroid Prime mentioned so early in the thread. Metroid Prime was one of the earlier gamecube games I received, and coming from the N64/PS1 it was the first game I'd ever played with that level of atmosphere and attention to detail. Even from the menu screen a certain tone and mood is set.

For the music
The amount of great music in video games continues to amaze me.

Thrash guitar that sounded too good, even for the SID chip. Bonus points for the flashing epileptic border.
Must be seen and heard to be truly appreciated. Let me see what youtube has:

Pretty good. Wait around until 1:05 when the music kicks up a notch.

For those of you too young to remember, that first 30 seconds of music was already pretty f---ing amazing for the time. So we were already going nuts listening to it for the first time, meter pegged at 10.

And then IT WENT TO ELEVEN. You wanted to cry big fat geek tears, it was so beautiful.

I'd like to add two more.

Defender of the Crown. I knew it as a Commodore 64 game.

This basically defined polish in terms of title screens. So classy. (Also, hey Eaglesoft!)

Then you have to watch the intro to The Three Stooges.

Stay with it for 30 seconds, to get the full effect.

although i haven't played more than half an hour of the game, i loved watching the time of day change in red dead redemption. watching the shades of nature change color as the sunsets was beautiful.

as far as looking cool goes, it's tough to beat the metroid prime 1/2 intros.

and for fun, i can't recall anything more nifty than super mario 64 (ds)

Flower has one of the best in my opinion. I love how it changes based on how far you are into the game.
You are correct. But this thread will be dominated for the music or graphics. Flower defined the game's entire theme at the title screen, evolved, required unique user interaction, and looks very nice to boot. Clearly the best I have ever seen.

Came here to post this. So. Damn. Awesome. And Baba Yetu! One of the best video game songs of all time IMO.

Also, the Freespace games had pretty awesome title screens, being inside a number of different capital ships depending on where in the game you are.

This is my favourite. The petals climbing that tower, beautiful music... The moment I saw that title screen I knew I bought a great game.

MGS4 is a close second.

God of War is also worth mentioning, it was a great idea and it's instantly recognizable.

The Halo Reach title screen looks awesome; does anyone have a video of it?

The main matte painting in the background changes based on where you are in the campaign, from this to this to this to this. Then the individual lobbies have different backgrounds, with Firefight, Forge, Matchmaking, and Theater getting unique backdrops.

It's an incredibly slick system. The video doesn't show it, but there is an in-cutscene title card in the first cutscene that appears and is similarly great.

Doesn't GoW start a cinematic immediately from the title screen when you start a new game?

I thought that the way that the background scenes in the Half Life 2 menu changed as you progressed through the game was pretty awesome. And how the same thing happens when you finish Portal 2.

For me it has to be the effect of the title screen (excuse the timecode) of Gunstar Heroes - the phenomenal 3D effect (simply amazing for the Mega Drive - thanks to the lords or Treasure) and the music plus a glimpse of the destructiveness of Golden Silver... Shit I love that game.
