We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the block design in Braid? The character design in FEZ? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
There was some conversation near the end of the last thread re: Indivisible's IndieGoGo campaign.
Lab Zero is asking for $1.5 million.
+ Lab Zero's previous campaign for Skullgirls DLC is by far the most funded IGG project of all time
- No IGG gaming project has ever broken $1 million before
IGG gaming campaigns that have broken $100k (successful campaigns only):
Skullgirls DLC $828k
Tobuscus Adventures: The Game (some YouTube star?) $644k
Shaq-Fu The Legend Reborn $458k
SMOSH Food Battle The Game (YouTube star) $258k
Them's Fighting Herds (My Little Pony fighter, currently being funded) $227k
Lacross 2016 $161k
StarForge $135k
Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm $118k
Reiza Simracing Bonanza $106k
So, a grand total of 9 games ever have broken $100k and none broke $1 million.
I hope Lab Zero makes it and what they've shown so far looks great. But I'd be scared of any campaign that requires you to significantly break the all-time record just to make the game. By contrast, 22 Kickstarter projects have made $1.5 million (28 have made $1 million; and maybe 250-300 or so have made $100k)
Hm, interesting. Guess my perception of crowdfunding has been a bit skewed, due to 1M+ being relatively common for high profile Kickstarters. Considering they already seem to have a publisher with 505, I cant imagine that they wouldnt be able to get a substantial amount of hype behind the project, especially if they were already successful before, but true, basically doubling the highest amount that IGG has seen so far? Tough.
I'm going to be very sad if they don't make it. I know it's going to be a stretch, but I have my fingers crossed for 'em. The prototype was really well done and I think it's going to do a lot for the campaign. I just hope the digital game tier isn't priced too high.
There's some differences, though. IndieGoGo is helping significantly with the marketing, from what Ravidrath said, so is 505 Games (which have some fan favorites in their catalogue), also, this is the first time (that i can think of) in which a crowdfunded game has a near 1 hour prototype with such refined mechanics, visual and music. One that isn't near completion, in this case.
Of course, it's not gonna be easy, but i don't think it's impossible for them to get to that. Especially with how transparent they've been and given how everything they promised (and more) from the Skullgirls IGG was delivered. That gives them some goodwill.
The deal with 505 is if they reach the 1.5 millions the publisher will give the other 2 millions to make the game, if the campaign fails they won't make the game.
Yeah, but 505 should have an interest in them being funded, so hopefully some social media coverage from their side, etc.
I've always sensed a bit of trepidation and nervousness in Ravidrath's posts and I never understood why. I had assumed their initial funding goal was somewhere in the neighborhood of $500-750k and thus thought "they'll clear that easily!". Knowing the goal is actually $1.5 million does change my perspective on things. I do hope (and I still think it will be) it is successful. As far as I'm concerned, aside from having the name of some legacy, 20+ year developer who invented or was a big contributor to IP/genre X attached to the project, I'm not sure what they could do that's better. Lots of goodwill from prior projects, extremely transparent developer, constantly engages with the community in a way most developers don't, a playable prototype so you don't have to guess what the game looks or plays like, etc.
I'm curious, what makes Indiegogo less successful/popular than Kickstarter other than it came second (I think) and is just already is less popular? Is there some objective measure by which Kickstarter is better (i.e. not brand name)?
I'm really looking forward to Paint The Town Red this month
It's a tad bloody. Only a tad.
It's a first-person brawler from the devs of Probably Archery and it's an expanded version of their 7DFPS entry. It features voxel-based damage so you can bash and slash enemies piece by piece, through flesh and bone.
Anyone know any good spooky (no jump scares, etc) indies for the spookiest month of the year?
I've only played the demo of this, so no idea bout the quality of the final game but I quite liked Fran Bow. And that is an adventure game so it probably don't have much in the way of jumpy jump scares.
I'd wait on a bundle with Aaru's Awakening. I started the game and began to enjoy it, even getting to the point where I'd tell others to give it a shot, but then I hit the difficult curve. It got really tough out of nowhere, and man, that final boss can go fuck off. It doesn't control well enough to justify a difficulty bump like that.
It could just be me.
For what it's worth, I did not enjoy Jotun much. Here's my Steam review:
I didn't like this as much as I thought I would, having killed 3 bosses and started on the path to the fourth. Here's what I didn't like:
- Plodding pace of exploration. Even running from area to area from the hub is a bit of a chore. Sometimes this lets you take in the sights that the game wants you to see, as the developers bring back the camera and reveal something spectacular in the distance. Moving slowly gives you time to appreciate what you're seeing. Most times however, the very basic of moving your character just isn't any fun.
- Combat isn't much to shout about. With only a couple of moves and an emphasis on your character's position rather than any skill in attacking, fighting enemies just isn't very fun.
- Bosses are a tad underwhelming. Okay, they were probably the the best parts of the game, but I think they could have been even better. Stop zooming all the way out when we're fighting the jotun - it doesn't make their scale more imposing, or awe us with their size. It just makes it harder to see. I don't get the sense that I'm fighting a titan when I'm controlling something absolutely tiny on-screen. I would love to have seen more reactive enemies as well. Fighting jotun felt more like they were just doing their thing. I could go off into a corner and they'd just run through their attack cycles.
- You don't have to give players problems in every stage. The constellation stage - I was wowed as I began, because I was doing something novel and unique, even beautiful. Then the developers had to make it difficult for the player somehow, with electricity travelling on the ground and lighting bolts coming out of seemingly nowhere to take away huge chunks of health, while still lighting up pylons in the shapes of constellations. What was serene and beautiful before became a complete chore and what I feel is emblematic of the game's failings. Another less egregious example is the ice level with the high points where you survey the entire stage. Why put in the blizzard that comes in intermittently and forces me to hide? It doesn't add anything interesting mechanically or thematically - all it does is make it an absolute chore to finish the stage. Don't manufacture problems for the player to face, and don't feel like you have to shoehorn something to make every stage difficult. You had something special with the constellation stage, but I think you blew it.
I enjoyed everything else - the Icelandic voiceover, the Norse mythology, the beautiful animation and backgrounds; they all give Jotun a mood and feel that is really unique.
I don't usually review games here but this was so, so close to being something special.
I'm curious, what makes Indiegogo less successful/popular than Kickstarter other than it came second (I think) and is just already is less popular? Is there some objective measure by which Kickstarter is better (i.e. not brand name)?
My sense:
1) IndieGoGo's primary audience in early years was funding campaigns outside the US, when KS had limitations placed on them by Amazon Payments; it never really got much elbow-room in the US market.
2) Many projects on IndieGoGo are flexible funding (the project creator gets the money even if the project is not fully funded). I think people are scared of that and I think it impacts their trust even for fixed funding projects on IGG
3) IGG takes your money immediately after you pledge and refunds it if the goal isn't met and the project is Fixed Funding. I think most people would rather not actually be out their money in the meantime, especially for larger pledges.
4) At various points they have sold themselves as a site willing to fund projects that are outside KS' guidelines. This might work for the people who want the money, but I suspect it doesn't work for the people who want to give money. Again, another way the site feels less safe.
5) Finally, I think most of the attention is driven by a large umbrella effect from a few small projects. That's not to say that DFA is responsible for Kickstarter being famous, but more that I think IGG in part hasn't taken off because it hasn't had an obvious mega-bucks success story. The closest is Skullgirls. I think if Torment or Eternity or DFA or whatever had been on IGG, it'd be a bigger alternative to KS now.
With regards to IGG, I've never been fond of the way you can't cancel your pledge after they have taken your money. That makes me very unwilling to pledge to a fixed campaign and totally unwilling to do it to a flexible one.
