Sega climb one place to No4 with ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’, positioning it ahead of 6 format newcomer ‘WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2010’ at No5.

The critically acclaimed PS3 ‘Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’ is robbed of 4 places as it slides from No2 to No6 (-53%), while 2K Games/Take 2 claim the 4th Top 10 new entry this week with ‘Borderlands’ at No7. The large number of Top 10 new entries means Nintendo find themselves down 4 places to No8 despite sales of ‘Wii Sports Resort’ rising by 3%. EA are the only publisher to have at least 2 games in the Top 10 thanks to ‘Need for Speed: Shift’ (-19%) only dropping 3 places to No9. Codemasters complete the Top 10 with ‘Operation Flashpoint: Dragon’s Rising (-60%) down from No3 to No10. Sony’s ‘EyePet’ doesn’t manage to crash the Top 10 new-entry party, debuting at No18, while bundling boosts ‘Lego Batman’ (+123%) up to No19 and ‘Pure’ (+563%) back into the Top 40 at No29.

Lol the radio ad's they've been running for this have been hilarious you can smell the desperation.

I loved the game on DS but R* had to have realised that it's new GTA fans don't like that top down view.

also the Ice Hockey is the exact same mechanics as Mario Strikers Charged - pass with A, body check with a shake, charge the puck up by continual passing and when its glowing shoot. Although obviously no crazy power-shot / IR goalkeeper moments...

The dream event sections are an awesome idea for when you fancy a break from the Olympics setting. The first two levels available are a skiing slalom on a converted Mario Circuit from Mario Kart Wii - complete with weapons from Mario Kart, and a similar level set in the nightime city / bridges level from Sonic Adventure 2.

Actually, the way the 3/4 player was more sluggish than 2 player in the Mario Kart dream event made me think that it was actually running on the MK Wii engine.

SEGA seem to have been allowed access to code / assets / sound FX from recent Nintendo games and of course they've exploited their own too. I'm actually considering buying it myself.

For those dismayed by it being above Uncharted 2 this week, I bought it myself the day it came out, I can imagine it was quite front-loaded - those who played the first game or the beta would have been pulling hair out in anticipation. But its such a good game - I'm sure it will continue to do well and get picked up by more PS3 owners.

Why? One is a game that will be more frontloaded than the other since one is more 'casual' fare and one is more 'core' fare. I'm sure not many people expected Uncharted 2 to keep charting (pun intended) higher than M & S considering one game sold 10 million units and one sold 2.5...

Good to see Uncharted 2 on the top in France, Netherlands and top 5 in UK in the release week of PES and Forza... Hope that it stays on the top 10 through the holidays... it deserves. Great entry to Forza (top notch game also) and PES PS3 selling more than XBox 360 is a relative surprise.

So when do we see news articles that Chinatown Wars just is not selling overall, since we had all the drama queen stories about how the DS cant sell mature games based on Chinatown Wars

Some people don't want to accept that top-down GTA isn't mass market, and vastly prefer other hypotheses, probably relating to so-called "hardcore" games and DS.

No we'll chalk it up to the fact that the PSP Can't sell software, and blame the DS for not selling mature games. So that people can still be right.

People know and expect Wii a phenomenom like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games to outsell something like Uncharted 2. They're not even in the same league. Now what would be odd is for Uncharted 2 to outsell M&S. That would not end well.

Whilst I think that this is probably correct, I don't think it's exactly contrary to the idea that the DS isn't the best marketplace for GTA games either.

I feel bad for all those people who bought Mario & Sonic, the game is terrible and Nintendo should be ashamed to let SEGA defile their brand like that.

I bought it for my little cousin's birthday, and almost felt ashamed I did, while we played it. It's awful, the framerate is realllly bad. With the success the 1st game enjoyed, you could have thought they would have invested in the sequel with great production value. Instead they developped something that is between the N64 and the GC on a technology level, and it wasn't even fun.

I'm with you on this one, I can't believe Nintendo let such a poor game use its Mario brand assets.

pes 39% down on last year's game. total flop. the series is finished.

all new releases (per platform) sold below 70,000 :lol

the uk must be waiting for modern warfare 2, which no doubt will be the best/fastest selling game in the uk during launch period.

Great to see the success story that is Uncharted 2 in Europe and not a big drop for it in the UK considering all the new releases... it even outsold PES on the 360. I'd have laughed at you if you'd said that last week.

V disappointing opening for WWE, considering it was going for £25 at the supermarkets as well. Not great at all. Also disappointing for Borderlands PS3 (I did my part). Eyepet charted higher than expected. With word of mouth and some ad exposure/demoing, this could be a steady seller... of Sony can pull it off.

Really don't know why Pure and Lego Batman is split in the chart or even why it's put in the charts at all with it being a bundled pack in and not a seperate SKU as shown. Same with Kung Fu and Lego Indy.

Wow. PS2 Smackdown misses the top 40 and only gets to 2 in the PS2 chart (behind FIFIFA) - that would have been unthinkable only a year or two ago.

Seems that Wrestling isn't as popular these days overall, although it has launched 2/3 weeks earlier than normal this year for some reason.

The fact that Licensed Kids title UPs best selling format is the DS suggests that parents and kids are happy to let the DS be the natural successor to the PS2 in the UK, until the PS3 is cheaper anyway.


PES seems to have lacked buzz amongst regular people at retail and only the faithful have gone for it. The 'IT game' was Forza this week.


The Government approved Wii Fit Plus comes out next week. I'm aiming to get it from Asda for about £15, if the families haven't picked it up first.

It's to do with how the packs are barcoded. The Wii is sold as a Wii with Wii Sports as a valueless add on - these are sold as the individual items with the cost split between them (or so I'm led to believe) so count as individual items. The new Wii box should count towards Wii Sports Resort too I think, as it was available separately first and has a 'value' in the charts eyes.

Small things I observed.
At number 34 in the DS budget chart is Boulder Dash Rocks; which was being sold at £4.99 at Play.com (they're out of stock now) which is believe was the only retailer to have any stock left. This gives some idea of a mixture of; how little you have to sell to be at that position, how much impact just one retailer can have.

On a similar note, I was under the impression Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword was selling better at play.com yet that is in neither DS chart (possibly due to it being classified as a full price game and so just missing the cut for that chart;it seems bizarre what determines if it is budget or full price; Wii play is budget despite costing £35 yet Brain Training is full price at £19.99)

Style Boutique (Style Savvy) could only muster number 27 in the DS charts. At least it did better than Kirby Super Star Ultra but I have to ask the timeless question. Did they forget to market it? It seems like the kind of game you're going to have to market to make it go anywhere at all due to the audience being limited (as much as the Iwata Asks insists how much the male testers and older women had with the game end of the day it will be perceived as a title for little girls).

Super Smash Bros brawl remains solid due to price cuts. Rhythm Paradise sees a rise from even more price drops.

just two remarks:

Wii play is always counted as budget because the substract the cost for the wiimote i believe, so it only counts as 5 £ game.

The nr. 1 DS Budget game isn't in the individual top40, which would make Boulder Dash at least n. 74, but more realistical anything between no. 150 and 500 as i understand it. a few weeks ago someone showed that only selling 3,000 units would be enough to reach top20 (i hope i don't mix up numbers) so the game you picked maybe didn't even reach three-digit-sales, i would guess

They are trying to target other people with their advertising not the people on GAF who all know about and will buy the game regardless.

Slightly off-topic, maybe, but something that just came to mind: I'm honestly surprised about the lack of Forza 3 marketing. I've seen zero Forza ads so far. EU is the perfect market for Forza and considering the quality of the game it could be a huge game for this area. I don't really understand why MS didn't give it a bigger boost.

Really? Strange, here in Italy there's been quite a bit of Forza 3 tv ads, albeit there have been more of them specifically for the X360 Elite with Pure and Lego something.

Uncharted 2 on the other hand, where the hell are the ads?
