It’s the last week of September, the end of Quarter 3 and the market receives a well-timed boost from 2 format-specific titles debuting at No’s 1 and 2. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 ‘Halo 3: ODST’ debuts at No1 exactly 2 years after ‘Halo 3’.

The aforementioned ‘Halo 3: ODST’ was released on Tuesday 22nd September and such was the demand that it sold 64% of its week 1 sell-through in the first 24 hours. It ranks at No12 in terms of biggest week 1 sell-though for a single format title. ‘Halo 3’ debuted on Wednesday 26th September 2007 with Day 1 accounting for 65% of its initial week, but week 1 sales of ‘Halo 3’ were far greater which explains why that title is currently the 4th biggest single format title ranked by week 1 sell-through (behind ‘GTA: San Andreas’ PS2, ‘GTA IV’ 360 then ‘GTA IV’ PS3).

The other big single format launch this week is Nintendo’s DS ‘Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box’ which debuts at No2, one place higher than that ever achieved by the original ‘Professor Layton And The Curious Village’ which this week enjoys a sales uplift of 36% and climbs 5 places to No18. Last week’s No1 is forced down to No3 even though EA’s ‘Need For Speed: Shift’ enjoys a sales surge of 7% over last week. Also new this week is Activision Blizzard’s ‘Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2’ debuting at No7 and NCSoft just miss out on the Top 10 as PC MMO ‘Aion’ debuts at No11. The last new entry is EA’s ‘MySims Agents’, in at No16 on DS & Wii.

How did 360/PS3 Dead Space do in the UK charts?

Edit: I'll answer my own Q...

360 version debuted at no. 10 in the individual format charts, PS3 version at 16 in w/e 25 Oct 2008.

Number 6 in combined chart.

Week 1 (w/e 25 Oct 2008)
10 - 360 DEAD SPACE
16 - PS3 DEAD SPACE

Week 2 (w/e 01 Nov 2008)
21 - 360 DEAD SPACE
28 - PS3 DEAD SPACE

Doesn't look like either version was seen again after week 2.

Decent I suppose. Dead Space is an amazing game. I've not picked up Extraction yet but definitely intend to.

Oh, see you caught week 1.

They fucked up the launch a bit, the official release was supposed to be the october 1st.

The PS3 version of Batman is still holding its spot, though the 360 version isn't toooooo far behind. Yesterday was the first time I got to see the Joker DLC in action though and it does look awesome, so I guess it really does count when it's done well.

Layton's debut makes me smile. So many people I know were eagerly awaiting it here, after the first one being quite the sleeper hit.

i dont want to be a troll but maybe they should add party to it :D The audience is the less informed audience and they usually decide by the titel and cover (check the Wii sales for Ninja Breadman if you dont believe ah and ofcourse the top ten) so giving it a good cover and good name with party on it should help boost the sales.

DEAD PARTY: Extraction?

I'm not so sure..:P

I am not sure whether they decide on the basis of the cover or rather (or additionally) on the basis of word of mouth. At least, that seems to be right for titles like the Wii series, so there is reason to believe the same holds true for other titles. I think the Wii public is more educated than some of us are willing to believe, in that they just don't rush out to buy games, but rather wait and try the games at other people's homes and then get enthusiastic. Of course, this is nothing more than conjecture.

On Dead Space Extraction, wasn't it only available at the end of the week? (and very badly advertised at that) If so, then it might not be surprising that it did not chart. I don't think it will light the charts anyway, but with any luck it will crawl towards a decent amount of sales, so EA can be satisfied with their little experiment.

GarthVaderUK said:

Still, it could have done a lot worse. At least it even entered the Wii only charts and at number 16 to boot (many first party games don't even chart as high as that). Plus as said the stealth release a week early doesn't help matters either (when it falls dramatically next week I'll have to come up with a different excuse)

Oh for fucks sake. Do you really want to go there? REALLY?

It has nothing to do with Wii owners. Most of the people who are aware of the Dead Space brand have purchased one of the HD consoles or a well-built PC. It is mostly those people who should have bought this game.

I don't get it : multi-console owning ratio is that low in the UK ? Or was the original Dead Space an issue itself ?

I own a Wii but can't be arsed getting the Wii game when I've got Batman to finish and ODST to plough through before Uncharted 2 releases in just a few weeks. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Perhaps people just prefer non-guided experiences (yeah I know, HOTD did well). I'm not surprised that an on-rail prequel to a game on HD systems doesn't debut well, but if it's a good game it will probably pick up some steam through word of mouth.

Dead Space not "high profile" enough ?

...

What the hell was EA's idea when they decided : "hey, let's develop an entry of one of the most promising but fragile intellectual properties, alienate our fan audiance by cross-dressing it in a lightgun shooter and propose it to another audiance who has virtually no will to play it" ?

So pissed off. Did EA really think that they may attract casual players with this ? They will lose money and shut any future Dead Space developments for the next decade or so. I am the loser in this weird marketing shitstorm.

Dead space EX is out?!? I haven't heard a thing. Wow.

I've been burned by On Rails before: RE:UC I'm looking at you. So i'm reluctant to jump in. I usually like exploring myself, give me the illusion of control.

I think Dead Space: Extraction started development before Dead Space was released. They also had a movie, comics, they were pretty serious about turning Dead Space into a franchise and it certainly has potential.

Can you please link me to the sales of Ninja Breadman?

Probably this, they obviously expected more from the franchise.

I had absolutely no idea Dead Space: Extraction was even out now. I was in GAME last weekend and nope, not a sausage about its release.

Kenka said:

IIRC they wanted to see if they could attract 'hardcore' players with it, not casual. It was part of their "is there a hardcore market on wii, or does everyone just play these games on their ps3/360s?" test.

Maybe it will do better during the week it was meant to be released in though. And just cos it didn't chart doesn't necessarily mean it did HORRIBLY. Software sales will have been higher the last few weeks since the slim & elite price drop so it's probably harder to chart now than it might have been at other periods.

Holy crap @ the number of PS3 titles on the list. It seems PS3 Slim owners are actually buying software as well. It seems Sony will have very nice holiday sales in the UK.

DS: Extraction not out in one of the busiest Dublin Game stores.

Just checked on my lunch.

Maybe it is a spotty release, I doubt it is sold out.

Great minds think alike!

Checked a Game in Dublin for it too over lunch - no sign of it.

I think it probably got released accidentally by some retailers early, but not in enough volume to hit the chart. I don't think it's been released, even, just some broken street dates here and there.

Yeah, I've noticed that. PS3 slim owners are buying software like crazy.

It's had the most # of titles each of the past three weeks, but 360 went ahead on the weighted chart this week. Still a big uptick since week 36 for PS3, though.

I thought that DS didn't do so sell on the HD systems either. Even if it did it is not going to sell on Wii just because it is a light gun game. It is not my type of game anyway. I would rather see something LKS sell well so I have other reasons to not want to hear Wii owners complain.

Bunch of punks they are.

are they picking up classic titles, or just new stuff?

PS3 Slim in da house.

It must be noted that most of them are near the bottom 11-20 while the 360 is more in the top 10. Not sure if this is that good. Then again maybe the Slim people are picking a wide selection of titles instead of the big blockbusters?

Is GH5 really cheap, or is RB: The Beatles just bombing? I never would have thought RB: The Beatles would do so bad :(

Just bombing. Having a single artist release even if its the Bealtes, restricts your potential audience especially when the average age of user base of the HD consoles cares little for the Beatles.

GH5 with its setlist of artists deriving from 2000-2009, has a far greater appeal to this demographic IMO.
Some people like all the readers of the RB thread hate this, but its makes perfect sense to me.

mrklaw said:

New (MP) titles are either close, or with PS3 ahead, and they're picking up recently old titles (KZ2) or new editions (LBP GOTY), and they're picking up oldies (FarCry 2).

Lots of diversity there.

RB is non existent in Europe, a lot of it comes from that, so no need really to over-analyze it.

The whole premise of Beatles Rock Band is that the popularity of the Beatles would overcome the name brand advantage that GH has.
