There are 6 new entries in the Top 40 this week, three of which make the Top 5, two of which constitute the games industry’s own ‘Battle of the Bands’ as ‘Guitar Hero 5’ and ‘The Beatles: Rock Band’ go head-to-head.

The new No1 is Activision Blizzard’s ‘Guitar Hero 5’ which is the first in the series to take an All Formats No1 placing – both ‘Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock’ and ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’ (the fourth in the series) reached No4 on the All Formats Chart. Codemasters debut at No2 with ‘Colin McRae: Dirt 2’, one place higher than that achieved by the original ‘Colin McRae: Dirt’ back in week 25, 2007. Eidos’ ‘Batman: Arkham Assylum’ drops from No1 to No3 (-60%) and at No4 we have the last of the big 3 new entries, EA’s ‘The Beatles: Rock Band’ debuts higher than the highest position achieved by either of the previous Rock Band titles (record for this series held by original ‘Rock Band’, No6 in week 21, 2008).

505 Games’ ‘IL2 Sturmovik’ has a storming second week, down just one position to No7 as sales only drop 3% over the initial week. The other new entries this week are Eidos’s ‘Championship Manager 2010’ at No13 (Beautiful Game Studios), Eidos’ ‘Mini Ninjas’ at No15 (IO Interactive, of ‘Hitman’/’Kane & Lynch’ fame - Magic Pockets DS version only) and South Peak Games’ ‘Section 8’ debuting at No22 (Timegate Studios).

EA’s ‘The Beatles: Rock Band’ debuts higher than the highest position achieved by either of the previous Rock Band titles (record for this series held by original ‘Rock Band’, No6 in week 21, 2008).

Well, I suppose that's a silver lining for the most depressing sales information in video game history.

rock band brand is non existent here in europe, i'm sorry you thought otherwise. EA probably tried to marry it with beatles to give it higher visibility here in PAL lands (being beatles an english band well known in the whole europe), but it just wasn't enough.

opening that low when beatles news were in every news for the past weeks due to their relaunch is just pathetic.

considering we're talking about england, other europeans countries will see even less sales from rock band: beatles.

This is true - many people probably don't realise they can play it with their existing GH controller too.

If it was Guitar Hero: Beatles, I reckon it'd have been #1.

No need to apologize to me. I'm not the one who didn't buy the awesome game.

I love the Beatles but my first thought when I saw the game for the first time was that it would be too easy. I'm aware that its not and they've made some songs quite a challenge, but when I think of the Beatles I think of three or four chord pop songs... whereas Guitar Hero was always about working your way up to being able to colour co-ordinate insane riffs to some Dragonforce song or something. I wonder if that perception is a factor in people holding off?

No mention of hardware or anything this week

I think that the expectation was that it would appeal to an untapped audience that was less concerned with such bombastic frippery.

It's all good, really. Paul McCartney needs to be shown a lesson so he can come down a peg or two. Both him and his choice of women annoy me somewhat.

Unfortunately they just had a record breaking album chart mulit-entry with their remasters though. I say unfortunately, because in Paul's "me me me" head they're all solo albums.

Yeah. He needs to knocked down a peg. It's not like he was in The Beatles or anything.

Or wait, was he in that band?

;D

The problem is that Paul thinks he WAS the band.

TV has been plastered with Guitar Hero 5 adverts, haven't seen any for Rockband Beatles, so its as simple as that. Companies need to just accept if they dont TV advertise they don't sell.

EA ruined the Rockband brand over here as well by releasing it a year late and at a hefty price and then releasing the sequel not too long after.

I don't know about that. I watched All Together Now this weekend and he frequently acknowledged the contributions of four other people in fact, even going so far as to include George Martin's impact.

Well with only him and Ringo left that's actually true now.

Hahah see what I did there? I'm fucking hilarious, me.

Here on NeoGAF, we're all contributing far more to society, culture and arts than Paul McCartney ever has. We should be proud.

Shush! I don't like him and that's that. :p

here in the UK it seems the people behind the Beatles machine are pushing the band heavily at the moment but the game is getting little mention, I think they will start advertising it close to christmas perhaps.

EA definitely had something to do with killing the establishment of the brand over here. They can only blame themselves.

Though I have seen a few ads for Beatles plus it was on the news. Wasn't aware GH5 came out last week.

i've seen shit tonnes of gh 5 advertisement over here butt ive also seen a decent amount of beatles ads.

i think we can only hope that the beatles have nice long legs.

"The Beatles" is the brand. Not "Rock Band".

It's sales are pretty much down to awareness. It's not like people think "The Beatles ROCK BAND? Fuck, that game is so shitty, I've never heard of it!"

Exactly. There's no way to spin this except that there's just minimal interest in the game itself.

Which is why you should not rule out the possibility of being happy when the NPDs come out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but MTV are eager to reignite BEATLEMANIA over there, where as here, I've heard next to nothing about the game.

I've ruled out the possibility of ever being happy again.

Guitar Hero 5 sold more on PS3 than on Wii.
The Beatles: Rock Band sold more on Wii than on PS3.

Wii fans have better taste confirmed?

The gap with Dirt 2 is a little strange as I was expecting them a lot closer, maybe even PS3 higher, with Forza 3 almost with us.

The people who make up a large chunk of the videogame playing demographic (specifically console gamers) probably have minimal interest in the Beatles compared to the world at large.

I do think the Beatles Rock Band will end up having longer legs than Guitar Hero.

Pretty good showing overall, Wii Sports Resort and Batman Arkham Asylum hanging on tight!

Why would one thing have to do with the other? As someone who likes racing games, I usually buy all the good ones and then just dip into which ever one I am currently inclined to. I still play PGR 4, etc.

As an example I will not be buying Dirt 2, Forza 3 and GT5 as 3 racing games in 3 months is too much for me. I will buy at most two; so Dirt 2 loses out a sale as its too close to Forza 3.

Is that game actually any good? I keep hearing the name a lot but what little I've seen of recent media makes it appear rather blah.

Batman and Wii Sports: Resort are still riding high and I hope to contribute to both of those soon saleswise. Yay good games!
