Newcomer ‘Ashes Cricket 2009’ from Codemasters bowls out Nintendo’s ‘Wii Sports Resort’ after two weeks at No1, becoming the first UK publisher to reach the top of the All Formats chart since Eidos in week 6 2007 (with ‘Battlestations Midway’).

Codemasters’ last All Formats No1 was 4 years ago with ‘Brian Lara International Cricket 2005’, however a strong marketing campaign sees ‘Ashes Cricket 2009’ outsell it by almost 3 to 1 in their respective debut weeks. It is far and away the biggest launch for a cricket title with release week sales almost matching those of EA’s recent boxing chart topper ‘Fight Night Round 4’. Sales of Wii Sports Resort are down 49%, but it is still well ahead of the rest of the Top 10 at No2. ‘Wii Fit’ and ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10’ both slip one place to Nos 3 and 4 respectively, while EA round off a Top 5 full of sports/fitness games with ‘Fight Night Round 4’ a non-mover at No5.

EA have 4, rather than last week’s 5, games in the Top 10 as ‘Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince’ drops 2 places to No6 and ‘The Sims 3’ teeters on the edge, down 3 places to No10. Strong pricing on ‘Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood’ helps it rebound 3 places to No7, ahead of ‘Mario Kart Wii’ at No8 and Disney’s film tie-in ‘G-Force’ which makes the most of the launch of the film in cinemas by climbing 18 places in its second week, breaking into the top 10 at No9.

wow.

how did the wii version of the ashes game sell the least, it was the main focus of like 80% of the adverts, and seems tailor made for the wii audience.

Eurosport 2 was showing Cricket the other day. i could feel my beard growing, breathing, talking...

don't worry though, the game won't crack the top 100 in any other place in Europe and we won't be infested by it.

It'll likely end up as the top seller. Don't forget it's competing with the likes of Wii Sports Resort.

I was wondering the same thing :o let's see how it does next week :P Though I doubt it will do better than the other versions, since it's, ya know, cricket.

Cricket is big in Europe...I guess.

So big that there's a whooping 1 cricket field in France... lol :) It's big in the UK, India, Pakistan and some other countries from the common wealth

And yet the Ashes game will be a tenner in a right now as England have decided to turn into a pub team :)
Fixed for the current reality.

Anyone else notice that the "cover curse" appears to have translated to the sport of Cricket, heh.

I think you meant they decided to return to being a pub team.

Well, there is a correlation between England resorting to using Ian Bell and them losing, so yeah, you may have a point.

Back on topic: WSR appears to have revived the Wii in the UK, and where the hell did Mario Kart Wii come from? The game refuses to die, awesome.

I don't understand anything about cricket but when I was in London a month or so ago I remember hearing in the news how Australia beat UK like 350-1. How is that even possible? :lol

The little i undertand of cricket 350 is the number of runs and 1 is the number of people that were bowled out, a bit (a small bit) like baseball

if England wins the ashes which might help in the game having better legs,i hope EA takes notice so that i can play a fully licensed cricket game with all the real name players,clubs/counties and whatnot, ideally i'd want codemasters to do that but.....:(

I think it might not make as big a splash until next week.
Tiger Woods debuted lowest on Wii (same order), but rolled to the top the next week, and has stayed there.
Virtua Tennis also started slower on Wii, but it managed to top the other two for the two weeks after. Though it also did sink faster than the others, but this was probably due to Wii owners having more options, and they decided to go with the arguably better one.

It's just the general trend for Wii and DS games.
Games tend to have lower debuts, but stronger legs.
