Not since 2004 (FIFA 05 in wk41 vs. PES4 in wk42) have the 2 big football titles been just 1 week apart. And whilst we are on memory lane, 2003 was the last time PES debuted before FIFA (also one week apart). This week is of course dominated by ‘FIFA 11’ which was up against last year’s iteration ‘FIFA 10’, the biggest FIFA title ever launched and the third biggest All Format title ever launched in the UK (behind ‘Modern Warfare 2’ and ‘GTA IV’).

‘FIFA 11’ comfortably takes the third place from ‘FIFA 10’ with overall units up 21% / overall revenue up 36% on ‘FIFA 10’ week 1. Xbox 360 remains the lead format (+26% units over last year) and PS3 is close behind (+23% over last year).

The 2 lead formats accounted for 96% of the 6 formats (DS debuts next week) compared to 94% last year. In terms of individual SKU week 1 unit/revenue sales ‘FIFA 11’ 360 is No8 and the PS3 version is No9. Finally, in terms of all 360/PS3 software units sold in week 39 ‘FIFA 11’ accounted for a massive 63%. The rest of the All Formats Top 40 shows no other new releases and Codemasters drop to No2 with ‘F1 2010’ (-46%). Capcom remain at No3 with ‘Dead Rising 2’ – 360/PS3 versions joined this week by the arrival of PC version (-23%). Microsoft’s ‘Halo: Reach’ drops 2 places to No4 (-45%) and Activision Blizzard climb one place to No5 with ‘Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’ (-13%). EA’s ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11’ climbs to a third best chart position since launch at No6 (+71%) and Sony’s ‘Sports Champions’ drops 2 places to No7 and remains the best-selling Move-enabled title for a third week in a row (-35%).

When I first saw the chart, I wondered why the 360 version of FIFA was higher, since every advert I saw advertised the PS3 version. After a trip to town, I found out why: every single 360 pod in every game store had FIFA on while every PS3 pod had it disabled. I've never seen anything quite like it.
Though it does show (possibly) that Sony/MS have to pay the retailers to have any games playable instore.

+21%? I expected it to be down on 10 because nowhere was selling it for a straight £25 like last year.
GAME was selling it for £25 today.

Dead Rising 2 was selling there for £30 also.

EDIT: Fair enough.

Really surprised to see the 360 version of Fifa on top especially seeing as EA have only been including the PS3 logo's in their ads for the game.

I never thought I'd be happy to see a FIFA game in the charts but if it gets a PSP game into the Top 10, I'm all for it.

Only 1% market share for the Wii? Why aren't football games more popular with the Wii's target audience?

It's been a while since a multi-platform game has done well on Wii versus the big boys, right? Last one I can think of is Tiger Woods, and that had Motion Plus packed in.

Whatever Sony did with EA, it only helped increase the 360 lead for FIFA (in the first week at least).

A lot of people (my friends anyway) enjoy the online aspect of Fifa especially the Pro Clubs feature so with the Wii's lackluster online I guess anybody with a choice would steer well clear of that version.

The 360 has a larger install base in the UK than the PS3 so the 360 SKU leading isn't unexpected. The PS3 SKU will likely outsell the 360 SKU in all other territories.

Wow I think that FIFA number and break down warrant its own thread.

That's mega numbers, 3rd biggest UK launch ever, wow.....

Trying to get my head round it...

I'll make a thread

From my EA buddy:

"FIFA11: Biggest entertainment launch in Germany ever. 450k units in one week. 628% more copies than PES."

Insane numbers!

So this should finally bury the notion that PC Fifa was selling less because it was not running on 360/PS3 Graphic engine.

11 is the first "nexgen" iteration for PC and yay - it's truly done wonders for the numbers (1% shared with DS?)

It could be that PC accounts for the other 1%.

Of course, that'd be ignoring digital sales...

No Lego Harry Potter would be the correct answer (I think anyway)

Sports wise then yeah TW2009

On a WW scale, it'll at the very least match it.

Plenty of multiplatform games sell well on the Wii, especially licensed games. I don't even know why people are surprised at FIFA's sales on the Wii, most EA sports games has never done well on the Wii, considering this is the first "next-gen" FIFA, there is absolutely no reason for the Wii userbase to convert, especially when they aren't into buying sequels every year.

A bit OT:

Anyone know why they release PES and FIFA 11 in almost the same week almost 10 games into the season?

I mean wouldn't it make more sense if at least one of the studios releases it at the start of the season? You can always change some ratings via patch if that's the problem.

Its Konami's lost, EA has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Wii users already had their football fix with Mario Strikers or whatever it was called over there.

Thats why I was wondering, I mean if they would release it a month earlier they'll probably sell a whole lot more. But on week after everyone already has bought FIFA? Makes no sense at all..

Which Konami's decisions this generation make sense?

Ah yeah, but the soccer fanbase is pretty much entrenched on the PS3/360, otherwise we'd get a jump for the game when soccer fever kicks in.

It use to make sense when they were comparable competitors, but now its just pretty much stupidity.

The US charts would likely not be hugely different if we had weekly numbers.
I think many people here are kinda missing that only UK charts are usually discussed. UK is 20-30% of the european market, depending on the system, the game, the genre, the publisher it could be more or it could be less, but on average its a 20-30%.

So when you guys say some title selling 10k in a weekly UK chart is disappointing, its needed to take into account that a comparable number to a NPD one would be multiplying that for 4-5 for the weeks and for 4-5 for UK being 20-30% of the total figure in Europe.

Say Sports Champions sells 50k in a month in UK, that's probably 200k in Europe for the month. I wonder if SC will do that in US.

It seems unless it does comparable numbers in UK to US it has bombed, but its not usually going to. Reminds me of DQIX that did 33k in August for a 57k total and people seemed disappointed...hell, it could be 200-300k for Europe. How did it do in US in a comparable timeframe? iirc its first month in US was 100k something.

He's just talking about the charts being top10(or even top5) skewed, pretty much the case everywhere else in the world.

So by those numbers, Sports Champions did by conservative estimates: 14.2k > 12.6k > 8.2k = ~35k lifetime in the UK I think?

Yeah, I'm going for his argument, not against it. Not only its skewed, its numbers are perfectly normal. Expecting like 10 titles >100k in a month in UK only is not gonna happen, because if there's 10 in your average US month, there's probably as many in Europe, and by sizes the lowest of them could be at 20-30k only in the UK chart or 5-8k a week.

Also, it makes big successes even bigger. Fifa has probably had a >3m opening week in Europe, but it seems its only noticeable that it did really good in UK.

Ah I'm just saying software sales are getting top heavy (skewed), not that its out of the ordinary. UK and Japan is pretty much the same in software sales, things to use to sell a ton back in the Wii craze and now its just big openings on launch and low sales every other week.

FIFA's success is pretty noticeable, its the top game in every country we have so far.

Kinda.

The 1% for Wii is above the 1% for PSP and Sports Champ is in the middle. This gives us an effective range of (1.49% to 0.51%) of (820,501 to 821,499) to work with.

Extrapolating back with the confidence interval attached is fairly easy and would give us a true range within which the value lies.

Personally I think Chart Track read NeoGaf and like to mess with us...

DS version is out NEXT week, PS2 version is on around 1% also due to chart position, and PC isn't in the top 40 but is in the PC game chart.

Historically once you get out of the big new releases territory the rest of the chart is fairly stable meaning that a few 100 copies extra is the difference between top 10 and missing the top 20. I'd be surprised if there are any titles in the individual format chart selling less than 4,000 copies at the moment, most are probably over 5k.

The sales below 20th position can easily be influenced by a sale at a single store chain, no wonder Forza 3 keeps appearing on the charts once in a while. The game is probably given away for free with an Xbox Slim sold.
